I still think the Woody songs shouldn't count. If Jeff was an average songwriter, and the melody to Mountain Bed was better than any of his lyrics, I'd say count it. But Jeff is far from an average songwriter. Dude's got his own share of brilliant lyrics/melodies that this list doesn't need to sue Mermaid Avenue tracks.

Did you not see the thread titled "Spin"? Or did you just assume it would be unrelated?

Monsters of Folk (James, Oberst & Ward)
Shakespeare In The Alley replied to Wild Frank's topic in Someone Else's Song
Well, U2/Coldplay/etc are nowhere near my main concert experience. The most expensive non-festival tickets I've ever bought were $40 for Radiohead, Wilco and Tenacious D tickets, and those were all decent (not the worst, not the best) seats. Separate concerts, of course... These MoF tickets are a bit more expensive than the average indie band, but each guy in this thing has a fair amount of credibility and a large number of fans that will come see them. I just don't think $48 for the best seats is that bad, and I'm a college student with no real income at all. What's the average cap -

Those prices aren't really that high at all. All four guys in this group are known and respected on their own, so it's no surprise that they play decent sized venues, with more expensive tickets. -

Nope. I've already explained by thoughts. If the band references in the movie make a bunch of people legitimately discover Wilco, then that's great. If it makes a bunch of people like one Wilco song, that's also great. If it makes people think they like the band based on that one song, that annoys me. -

Well...it is something of a discussion board, whereupon people discuss, whereupon various viewpoints are shared and...discussed. -

Yea, I've heard a lot of talk about them, I just haven't listened to them at all. -

First off, I haven't ever heard any Phoenix song. So "the one you're hearing a lot" means nothing to me. Second, this is a good point. But the difference is that you've heard more than those two songs. You didn't just hear whatever the big one is and say you liked them. That's where I draw the line. I met a couple people who "liked" Sonic Youth after hearing their cover of Superstar in Juno, but they could not name anything else by them. Same with the Kinks and Well Respected Man. I see nothing wrong with liking those songs, but if that's all you've heard by a band, it's a bit early t -

I can tell I'm alone in my thoughts here. I don't have a problem with people liking one or two songs by a band. My problem is that they then say they like the band. If I liked HMD, but nothing else by Wilco, I wouldn't tell you I liked Wilco. I'd tell you I like the song Heavy Metal Drummer, by the band Wilco. It's not a matter of being "allowed to like the band." I just don't see how you can profess to like a band when you haven't heard more than one or two songs. At least listen to a whole album, or something. -
I want to like NMH, I really do. I've tried. But I cannot stand him. I just can't. The music on these albums is interesting, and the lyrics seem good, but I cannot get past his vocals. Just...no.

Well, when someone hears one or two songs by a band, and no more, and says they like the band, I find that stupid. I'm not saying legitimate fans need to like every song by a band, but if you only like a small number of songs, you like the songs, not the band. -

Quite well. Not just going to concerts, but saying they "like" Wilco. People who think they like any band when they really just like certain songs, or the band's image drive me crazy. Like I said, I like Seth Rogen, used to like Adam Sandler, and think Apatow has a bit of talent. But knowing the kind of people who think Superbad is the greatest movie ever, the douchebags will see this movie. Sadly, so will I, probably. -

Really? No DC date? I may be able to get to New York for the November 6th show. I really want to catch these guys. -

Well, the Shins name drop in Garden State brought them a rather large amount of publicity, mostly with people who would have never heard of them before. Anyone mentioned/played in Juno got a pretty large increase in popularity, although short-lived. Since Seth Rogen also appeals to the bro crowd (people who enjoy Superbad for being "real"), seeing him reference/give props to WIlco will make them do the same. While there's some overlap, I don't think the current WIlco audience is the target demographic for a Sandler/Rogen comedy. Hence the full force. -
That was an incredibly cute video. Spencer is a pretty damn good drummer.

First off, this movie looks like it could be pretty enjoyable. I'm a bit of a Seth Rogen fan. I just worry about the douchebags coming out in full force depending on how many times they talk about Wilco in the film. -
To harp on the initial Jeff-bashing, I don't really think all the Wilco drama over the years has been a result of Jeff having a huge ego. I think it's just been a case of a strong minded, immensely creative individual trying to find the best possible combination of sounds/musicians to bring his musical visions to life. Is it egotistical to want your work to be represented as well as possible? Nope. It is not.

I think I gave an intelligent vaginal response. So...are you thanking me or not?

This is a good post. Not because of the rational argument, or the Cline wine picture. This is a good thread because you said Mikael is Woody Allen. Well done.

I'm fearing a Garden State/Shins-esque moment here with this movie's Wilco shout-outs. -
It's just a pointless question to ask, because it's only going to dissolve into a "Nels or Jay?" debate. It is a reasonable question in theory, but in actuality, the "fickle" Jeff you're thinking of has grown up. This thread:
-
In all honesty, if anyone ends the Jeff/Nels partnership, it'll be Nels, just because of all his other work, and the fact that he's considerably older than the rest of the band. And seriously, why did you make this your first thread?
-
To answer this using brief internet lingo, you're a noob. You will soon be ripped apart for even suggesting that Nels makes this Wilco the best yet. Jeff seems pretty damn happy with this lineup of Wilco. I honestly don't see it changing for a while. This isn't the migrane afflicted Jeff you saw before, or in the documentary. He's calmed down, and seems legitimately happy playing with the guys in the band. Why would he change that?
