Shakespeare In The Alley

I've sadly read less than great things about SFA at ATP. They're my absolute favorite band, and I went to NY to see them last Friday, the weekend of ATP, and it was incredible. It was a 600 person club, and the band and fans all seemed really into it. And the Furries played a great setlist of old and new shit. Terrific show. Was it just an enthusiasm issue, or are you not a DD/LY fan?

If you mean the "too literal a logo" comment, then I'd agree. There are exceptions, of course. But I'm imagining a cartoon earth spinning a record for OP's band, and in that case, it is far too literal.

Honest opinion...I don't like it. I have no idea what your band sounds like, but World Record Players doesn't strike me as a good name for anything but some sort of international DJ collective. Left Arm Tan, despite any possible intended irony, is a far better band name in my eyes. Considering your logo idea as well, it speaks to me as some sort of charity organization, bringing music to far corners of the world. Not exactly a band, and if it was a band, it's too literal of a logo. Unless, of course, it's so amazing a design that it simply must be used. I apologize. It's the designer

I don't think that's by a highly respected critic at all, if such things even exist. The amount of typos and grammatical errors is just painful.

You see, I'm perfectly fine with people not liking the stuff Weezer releases these days. But if you buy a new Weezer album expecting shit like Pinkerton, you have only yourself to blame when you don't get that at all. I'm not completely excusing the shit Rivers has released, but it's pretty clear the direction Rivers is taking Weezer, and I don't see why people keep paying attention just to express disappointment at not getting the exact album they wanted.

You could use this same logic on pretty much any job. For example, Shakespeare wasn't so great. All he did was make lines on paper. You've dumbed a complicated game down into the primary objective. Yea, I don't understand the backlash. I thought it was a good speech. Like someone said, MJ is not a regular basketball player. When you're never touted as anything less than THE greatest basketball player ever, how do you expect the guy to be humble? I enjoyed watching the speech. He's clearly still competitive as fuck, and good for him. He explained that that competitive drive is what made him the player he was, and referenced specific examples. I'd definitely rather hear the kind of shit that Rivers was writing around the beginning of Weezer as well, but I can find some appreciation for most anything he releases. I just don't understand when bands have fans who keep following the band, just to bash them for not releasing exactly what they want. At this point, it's more likely that Rivers will release big dumb rock songs, so don't listen expecting anything else.

Yea. I don't buy it, honestly. He may have helped flesh the songs out, but SIAS and Pinkerton are so intensely personal, that I don't think anyone but Rivers could have had much say about them. I have always wondered about how much the non-Rivers members ever did on album.

Oh yeah, Matt was definitely charismatic, but he lucked out. If it had been some other bass player for those albums, and Matt now, I think people would want other bassist back. Considering how fleshed out Rivers' solo demos are, I don't think Weezer has ever been a very collaborative band, until now.

I think Matt Sharp gets overrated like crazy. Dude wasn't awful, but he wasn't what made the first two albums great. I am a large fan of his backing vocals, and personality, but he got lucky, and played on the two Weezer albums that are never bashed. I can't say how much of those albums was collaborating, but I just don't see Matt as the Jay to Rivers' Jeff. I know Rivers recorded almost all the guitar tracks on Blue himself, so I don't think he was working too closely with anyone on those albums.

Weezer suffers from Wilco syndrome in some ways: fans who can't accept that the band isn't making records certain fans want to hear anymore. Is Weezer's recent output as good as Blue/Pinkerton? No, not by a mile. Is it without it's merits? No, it's got good moments. If it's appealing to a different crowd now, who cares. Listen to Blue/Pinkerton if that's what you want to hear. I know damn well that Rivers is capable of writing classic material again. Until that happens, I'll gladly listen to whatever he releases, and if he wants to release big dumb pop rock songs, which this album wi

Thanks. I was actually unaware that there was a Richmond beyond campus. I live on West Grace, and have spent plenty of time off campus in Richmond. I looked into this theater, and I have seen it, but not since this renovation, I guess. The shot on google maps street view is exactly how it looked when I saw it. It's far from the glamour shot posted in this thread. It is a nice looking venue, though. I'd still rather Wilco come to the National, honestly. Good club-ish sized venue, and great sound the one time I was there. Maybe a two-night stand?

Where is this place? I go to VCU, but I don't think I've ever seen that theater.

Now that this whole thing's out, I've been playing it front to back. He/they did a great job, I think. It sounds relatively cohesive, and there aren't many failed tracks.

I like you. I guess I'm just a more private person, but when I am feeling depressed or whatever, I really don't think the facebook world needs or cares to know. Posting shit like "...is left wondering where it all went wrong?" or "....is having a shitty day" are just screaming for the "Aww. What's wrong?" comment. I cannot stand that.

I have trouble with Facebook and all that social networking stuff, because most people just aren't interesting enough to warrant the amount of stuff they post. When I see an uber-emotional song lyric in a status, I just groan, because to me, it seems like nothing more than a cry for attention. However, I enjoy "...is so into *band*" statuses. I think that's a whole lot more worthwhile than picking a lyric to represent your mindset. It's all preference, obviously. I just view the lyric status as a waste of time. I rarely read them when I see that other people posted them.
