  1. We kind of zipped past this one, but I just wanted to say what a lovely picture that is.
  2. My brother and I were reminiscing last night about the moment he said to me "they've called Florida for Gore; it's in the bag! " Last night was a much more confident feeling.
  3. Cindy Sheehan got a fairly respectable 17%. She was still crushed by Pelosi, of course, with 72%, but I didn't think she'd even do that well. I suppose there was probably a republican in that race, too, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you who it was.
  4. Yeah, we Californians did some great things yesterday (60+% for Obama, yes on 2, no on 4), but I'm still stewing over Prop 8. Completely unrelated, and completely in the realm of presidential trivia: the death of Obama's grandmother in Hawaii this week got me thinking, has any U.S. president ever taken office with a surviving grandparent? I believe his Kenyan grandmother is still alive. Oh, and also on the issue of his family, I was sorry that his sister was not there with him last night (I believe they've been in Hawaii). She and her husband and their daughter just add to the lovely mi
  5. Only a reference to the best story ever told on VC, or maybe anywhere! So whenever we all get into these snipe-fights, let's try to remember that there are some things we can all agree on. Like just how f'ing awesome that story is.
  6. We appreciate your efforts, guys. Thanks for doing all the legwork, so the rest of us can sit back and soak it all in.
  7. Ouch! See my "where are you watching tonight" thread for my no-TV story. I couldn't hack it. Just don't worry about hooking up the DVD player or whatever, for today. Cable directly into TV, done!
  8. We have a friend who has to watch the Super Bowl by himself. So he can "concentrate".
  9. Some friends of mine invited a bunch of people over to their house, then followed up with this e-mail: Dudes. Seriously? (Actually, I talked to them Sunday night, they've run a cable from the neighbor's house, through their mail slot. Still though, I can't chance that set-up!) I'll be watching with the kids at my sister's house. We do this for every election, the kids get really excited about it, and it'd be nice for them to see a win for "our" side, for once.
  10. I'm in San Francisco. Lots of interest in the election here, not just the presidential race, but Prop 8 (banning gay marriage) is also on the ballot, so there will be lines today, I'm sure. I arrived at the polling place about 6:50am, 4 people ahead of me in line. Polls opened on the dot of 7, with 6 booths, so it shouldn't have taken me any time at all, but between the checking-in process and the huge number of votes to be cast, I was in there until about 7:20. In addition to president, U.S. representative, state assembly rep, superior court judge, school board, community college board,
  11. Laura, I haven't had a chance to listen to this yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Thanks!
  12. My body always wants an extra hour of sleep, so on the one day of the year it gets it, we'll take it. Damn, I totally lost control of my pronouns/sense of self in that sentence.
  13. Yeah, I was just popping in to say, I've finished the book, but will not be around enough today to start discussing, and will probably be too distracted until at least Wednesday morning. So if anyone else wants to start chatting about the book, I'm not going to stop you, but otherwise I'm calling an unofficial delay of the official start (or something like that ) until later in the week.
  14. I love the possibilites for replacing the name in that song! Yeah, I'm all for shows in the early afternoon.
  15. Someone said to me last night, sounds like George Harrison.
  16. "What time is it? Y'all got ten seconds to get to the dance floor!"
  17. Oh my god, that story is hilarious. A friend of ours brought her almost-2 year old with her for the primary, she'd been telling him about Obama, and wanted him to remember the day that they went to vote for him. But her polling place was in a high school gym, and there were kids playing basketball when they arrived, so that was really all he could focus on. Now whenever they see basketball on TV, he points and says "Obama!"
  18. I thought that too, Lou, but wherever it was I read that, they had a reason for thinking that it would be a special election rather than an appointment. Again, if I could remember where I read it, I might be able to pin that down.
  19. Last year, about a week before Christmas, my mom and dad and nieces and nephew came downtown to meet us for lunch and shopping (we do this every year). That day, a small building directly across the street from the big shiny new building I work in caught fire, and burned to the ground. That small building was an Irish social hall for many years; my parents, grandparents, and even my great-grandmother had all attended dances there. It was raining off and on that day, so as we walked around shopping and looking at all the holiday decorations, it was wet and sad and everything smelle
