They seem to be focused on one thing: If we don't pass Prop 8, your kids will be taught about gay marriage in school! There's also a No on 8 ad where the California Superintendent of Schools says that no, that will not happen, and then there are response ads to that one, saying that he's a liberal politician and a liar. Oy. Several of the Yes on 8 ads are run in both English and Spanish, which is not odd in California, but this is definitely being pushed to Hispanics, in the hope that they'll be more conservative on this kind of a social issue. I'm very surprised at how many Yes on 8 sign

In other election news, not related to the presidential race: http://www.noonprop8.com/ My mom got a lovely note in her mailbox last night, thanking her for having a No on 8 sign in her window. It was from a couple up the street, who've been together 24 years and were finally married in June. They've got three kids who go to school with my nieces and nephews. I'm totally disgusted by the Yes on 8 ads, I can't imagine what families like these must think when they see them.

This may have been posted already: Kids Pick Obama The theory (one of them) behind the accuracy of this poll (the only time it's been wrong in the past 13 elections was 1992, Bush/Clinton/Perot) is that there is no Bradley Effect. Kids are more likely to reflect their parents' actual views, while the parents themselves might not be 100% up-front. When my nephew was in kindergarten, his teacher polled the class on who they were supporting. 19 votes for Kerry, 1 for Bush, and the next day, that one kid's mother made a point of coming into the class to tell the teacher that no, their househ

No, it's spelled "ction".

Yeah, I'm aware of his legal career. I'm not saying I have any problem with him as a person, or even with any of his positions on the issues. I just don't expect much from him politically.

My problems with Matt Gonzalez mostly started after the mayor's race. He ran a good campaign, it was pretty close, and he had every right to be proud of what he did there. But his reaction to the result stunk of bitterness, and he dropped out of local politics after that race (after serving out his term as supervisor). He had tons of name recognition at that point, probably would have had a good shot at something like DA, but as far as I know, he hasn't run for anything since (5 years on), until he shows up as Nader's running mate. He could have racked up some good local support for the Gr

I think that one's the original, but I like , it's Shay Black at the Starry Plough in Berkeley. It goes on for-freakin'-ever, but there are definitely some funny lines in there, every possible rhyme for "Obama", like in the verse about his mother: "she comes from a line of good Irish mamas..." And then "from Kenyan, to Fenian, it's the American way". Damn thing's been stuck in my head for weeks.

While I respect Matt Gonzalez oh, just slightly more than I respect Sarah Palin, Nader's choice of Gonzalez as a running mate doesn't say much to me about Nader's decision-making (Matt Gonzalez was the representative to the SF Board of Supervisors from my district, the first Green supervisor, I believe; and yes, I voted for him). I respect what Nader has accomplished, but I don't think his runs for president are adding much luster to his legacy. It's been said here before, but where are the Naders and Gonzalezes of this world in the local elections? I really like the current supervisor in o

The "how is it cooked?" part is the big laugh line, but I actually prefer the ending of this piece:

Has everyone seen the David Sedaris thing on undecided voters?
-
He definitely did not play this at the Bridge School shows.

Went to hear David Sedaris read last night. He filled the Opera House (capacity 3000+). I was surprised by how self-assured he seemed on stage, it was a definite contrast to the squirrelly persona he puts across in his books. I'd say I enjoyed the new stories he read last night to anything in the last book, although that may have just been because it's easier to laugh out loud in a theater full of other laughing people, than on a crowded streetcar during rush hour. Oh, and he signed my book: "To Maudie, Your story touched my heart. David Sedaris" He recommended this, so I'll be putt

Jennifer Hudson's mother and brother killed
gogo replied to Mrs. Peel's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Dreamgirls was the movie version of a very successful Broadway musical, based on the story of The Supremes. Check out the cast, you might not recognize Jennifer Hudson's name, but you'll probably know a few of the others. Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in this movie. Before that, she was mostly known for being on American Idol. It's a very sad story. Every family has issues, to some extent, I don't think that makes this story any less sad. -

OK, first, this is hilarious, but I refuse to believe that of you, so that kind of undermines the funny. Second, I'm going to reply to this over here, just to keep things in their proper tidy boxes:

That is pretty damn cute.

Yeah, those genealogy reports on public figures always crack me up. Who is doing those? It's always something like "Princess Diana and Nancy Reagan are 7th cousins. Both are also 8th cousins of Humphrey Bogart." What?!? I did a family tree for my family in Ireland once. My cousin Sinead's husband is her fifth cousin. When I showed that to her, she said "just like the royal family! "

Where's Al Sharpton now, I ask you? Ashley Todd needs him!

Yeah, the recant was posted about a little ways back in this thread. I'm quoting that post and my own response to it, because I want some love for my Tawana Brawley reference (I know it's weak and I'm pathetic, just humor me, people). The whole thing is just such an idiotic non-story.

Breeder! In my argument about adding another layer to the process, above, I was thinking specifically of things like morning-after pills, which are a lot less effective when you have to wait a week for them to arrive from drugstore.com. -
She caved a lot quicker than Tawana Brawley.
