  1. Hey, no need for an apology - recognised it as someone aware of the Auckland/Wellington rivalry just wanting to gently stir things up a bit. Hope my reply didn't come across as being a bit chippy. Seems you were right anyway
  2. Nice work Wellington, you have put Auckland to shame on the reportage. You've also given us the Phoenix Foundation (I'm enjoying me some Buffalo at the moment) and Jerry Collins, so we'll forgive you for Welly-dub and Kerry Prendergast....... My bro went to the Wellington show last night, his first Wilco experience and loved it...
  3. I think you are right that many NZ music fans have only come to Wilco in the last few years so might be a bit unfamilar with some of the back catalogue. Other than a Big Day Out Festival performance in 2002, they didn't tour here until 2008, when all the shows got great reviews. The 7WC shows last year (which had a reasonably high profile here in NZ)certainly raised awarenes of the band and it's music (having NZ music royalty like Neil Finn declare you as one his favorite bands certainly helps) I think the bands following will continue to grow here now on, word of mouth is a great thing and th
  4. More love for Wilco from the NZ reviewers Real Groove Mag Review And of course, I left one of the the most obvious songs in a typical Wilco setlist (Impossible Germany) off the list above...
  5. We got a generous helping of Finn/Wilco live collaboration at the excellent 7Worlds Collide shows last year, with various Finns as stand-in Wilco band members, and we don’t get to see Wilco down here very often. So as much as I’m a really big fan of the various Finns and their work, I’m actually kind of pleased this stayed as a Wilco show. JT did say plenty of nice things about the time they spent here last summer with the Finns for 7WC, and bantered a bit with Elroy who was sitting in one of the front rows.
  6. Harsh, but possibly true. As there isn't much else to do in Wellington (the city where one busker with a guitar is known as a "Festival") I'm sure the setlist will be posted promptly by someone with nothing else to do (just joking my Welly friends) I'm sure a proper setlist will turn up, but this is my best recollection of what was played, though the order will be wrong; Opened with WTS Then in VERY approximate order; BBN, IATTBYH, You are my face, One wing, Deeper Down, Handshake Drugs, A Shot in the Arm, I'll Fight, Poor Places, Reservations, Nothingsevergonna, Jesus etc, ALTWYS, Hate

  8. From the Frenz Forum - a Finn fansite..... (nice alliteration there).... "the Wilco boys played a song in the studio that has never been heard and that is in the movie"
  9. Pitchfork quite like it..... Pitchfork review
  10. I know, and thank goodness for that. I was just hoping to wind-up our friend JohnO.
  11. .... and since then, to make up for turning up late to the 2 big ones in Europe, your leaders have ensured prompt attendance by actually starting most of the ones you've been involved in. And on that point, given the playing personal you have, the win-loss record since WW2 against teams that all seem to have a pop-gun offence and a limited but tenacious defence hasn’t been that flash. Time to look at the coaches and management perhaps?
  12. I don’t get why so many people in the US seem to be scared of the idea of universal healthcare. The current system certainly doesn’t seem to be working very well. As a percentage of GDP the US spends almost double the OECD average in total on healthcare. In terms of spend per capita its even higher; more than double the OECD average in total (private & public) health spending. Even the US public spend is comfortably higher than the OECD average and all but a couple of Scandinavian countries. The health outcomes in the US don’t seem to be any better than other OECD countries; in fac
  13. Seen this news? Flying Nun And this....(it's been up for a while and as a FN fan you may have already seen it, worth a watch if you haven't (in 9 parts))
  14. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more self-absorbed generation in adulthood than the baby-boomers, though the Gen-Xers are showing some excellent potential and might just give them a run for their money. Back on topic, I think people that video at concerts are sadly missing the whole point of the concert experience. IMHO the videoing is another example of our "look at me" society, the majority of videoers just want to "prove" they were there, so I don't think it's anything to do with them making a record of the concert experience at all. (At this point though i must admit to occassio
  15. Not sure if this was the latest list (I seem to remember a couple of these being mentioned already) but have trimmed out; Andorra, Bulgaria, Croatia, Fiji, Monaco, Nepal, Romania, Serbia, Singapore

Maybe you Wellingtonians are a more discerning and dedicated bunch, but i fear the apathy of the Auckland concert goer. I don't think they quite sold out the Bruce Mason Theatre in 2008 and that is less than half the size of the Civic - but I hope you're right and they pack the Civic out. You make a good point about the possible 7WC effect - there was a definite buzz at those shows about the Wilco guys performance of their own stuff and their contribution to the other artists' songs. I'll be doing my bit to spread the word anyway. If there was any justice in this world - and any correlati

Tickets sorted (row D, 6 rows back) so pretty happy. I'm excited about seeing them at a lovely old theatre like the Civic. Check out link below to see it in all it's totally over-the-top glory! Civic Is it just me or is this a fairly big venue (2500 capacity) for a band like Wilco to play in Auckland? Could this mean there might be further developments re supporting artists?

No mention at all for the Auckland show on either the Ticketek or The Edge (Civic) website. Maybe this is all just a cruel, cruel hoax?
  19. I think this story is worthy of a mention. Chris Knox is a Kiwi musician and artist who was one of the foundation acts and an influential figure on the seminal Kiwi indie label Flying Nun. Chris’s music came to us through the low-fi recordings of his bands The Enemy, Toy Love, and The Tall Dwarfs, as well as his solo work. He was also the creator of wonderfully weird and idiosyncratic “home-made” videos. In June this year Chris suffered debilitating a stroke. There is more info about Chris and this recovery since the stroke in these stories. Blog on the Tracks Public address As a trib
  20. So... Here's one theory on how it plays out. They start working on the new songs in January, and get em all knocked into shape at the Loft. Then in Apr-May 2010 they tour downunder again (this is based on a comment John made in a recent interview on when they would next be down here). They stay on after the tour and head into "Uncle" Neil Finn's Roundhead studio (with the whole band and some of their own gear this time) and bang out the bulk of the album, then head back home to finish things off. Album out early 2011. Job done. ...Yeah... I know...you're right....it won't happen like that...
  21. Wasn't sure where to post this, but it involves Wilco, being out and about, and it certainly would have been heard, so this thread'll do.... This is possibly the most exciting thing to happen in Cromwell since "Snowy" Craddock's best ram escaped from the top paddock and ran through the middle of town back in 1952.... Will (not) comply with orders to "stay"!!
  22. Something I found interesting about the 2 versions of this song is that the fuzz guitar and Wurlitzer disappeared from the WTA version, but Neil Finn's harmonies were left on (uncredited)
  23. Some possibly relevant comments in this interview; John Stirratt Interview "Washington City Paper : Wilco (the Album) suggests there’s no new overt sonic agenda. Even though Sky Blue Sky wasn’t billed as experimental as you other releases, it still had a definitive sound. Did the impromptu nature of what transpired in New Zealand contribute to putting down an album of just….songs? Stirratt: We were interested in getting the best sound we could get. There have been records in that past that may have had some limitations that are taken for a sonic agenda. We wanted the capability to go f
