He actually said he would retire, then he changed his mind. Here is an article from a few years ago, when the waters were a bit calmer but you could see the clusterf*ck brewing:

Leno Sticking Around Past 2009 Retirement Date?
Wednesday October 17, 2007
I always thought it was NBC's decision, not his.
-
Jay retired
He didn't??
Unless you call forcefully taking away the 11:30 timeslot and giving it to Conan retiring, then no he didn't retire. NBC just thought he was getting to old.
-
Leno isn't getting his "old show back", but NBC plans to give him his time slot back with The Jay Leno Show while NBC moves the Tonight Show to 12:05.
Who is going to take over the tonight show then, now that Conan announced that he's leaving?
-
Glad to see Leno's getting his old show back. I'm sure this will be tough for Conan and his fans.
I loved Leno on the Tonight Show, but his 10pm show just wasn't the same. I've noticed since Conan took over I've been watching The Colbert Report a lot more (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

Wow, this is really good.
Oh man, I remember hearing Written In Reverse on the radio a few weeks ago. I am really enjoying this.

If you have an iPod touch, it seems the NPR stream is working now. I'm currently three songs in.
And??
-
the promos they sent out were protected
That doesn't mean much in this age.

Phish 6/12 and 6/14.

Holy crap I have to listen to this.
-
Is this show up for download anywhere?
-
Shameful. AGIB should have at least made the list. I guess you can't really argue with YHF being up at number 3 though.

Canterbury came with the blu-ray box. I have two of them now.
From Amazon....
The set comes with a 200-something page coffee table book (although not hardcover)with pictures, lyrics, etc as well. A thin but very long (4 feet or more) poster comes with the set as well, it looks like a big file cabinet with the song names written on the folders. Lastly, there is a special box that contains a card to download mp3s of all the songs, a physical copy of the CD version of Cantebury House-Live at Sugar Mountain, and a little note pad thingy.
Interesting. It's not listed on the official archives site. And my edition didn't come with it either.

Live at the Fillmore with Crazy Horse
Massey Hall
Live at Canterbury House
The last one wasn't on Volume one.
So what I guess I'm saying is this could very well be a standalone only release like Canterbury House. Which I wouldn't mind at all.

Yeah, I was surprised this was so good but I'll wait until whichever archive edition this appears in before I purchase it. I already owned three of the discs that came with Archives One.
Did you buy one of the discs twice or something?
Also, this is really good. I haven't been let down by any of his performance series so far. Hopefully we'll get to see the new edition of the Archives soon.

Can't say that I agree with all his choices, but interesting nonetheless.
-
It doesn't matter what he calls it, it's still going to be compared to Mermaid Avenue.
And I agree, it's going to be hard to top. Especially the first one.
-
I am so disappointed. Anyone know any sites that'll have them for reasonable prices?
eBay is my last resort right now. I really don't wannna give my money to a scalper.
-
Damn you scalpers. I can't even get a ticket.
-
Sounds like the Dixie Chicks.

Does anyone know when the Joy Box is supposed to come out?
Anyone?
-
Radiohead.

Heard 'I Am Trying To Break Your Heart' on the radio the other day.
Leno / Conan / NBC / etc.

Hmm, even if it was his decision, I wouldn't be surprised if NBC influenced it in some way.
The next few weeks sure will be interesting though. Bottom line is someone's gonna be unhappy, and there isn't much NBC can do about it.
