  1. some of it isn't strictly baroque pop, or the artists aren't concidered so anyway, but it all roughly has that theme. hope you like it - it's the perfect genre for summer.
  2. cheers. yeah - i actually offered smellytramp the other option of a southern soul mix, but he went for this. i didn't want to go too obscure with it all, but it had to have some nirvana and left banke on it! i'm looking forward to your mix, now that you've mentioned them.
  3. here's my mix for smellytramp: baroque pop (or how they made music pretentious) mix (click on the request ticket link at top, and then download - it's a good site cos they keep the files up for ages) 01 The All Golden - Van Dyke Parks 02 Dance Lady Dance - Bert Jansch 03 She May Call You Up Tonight - The Left Banke 04 Chuckie Wago - Lou Christie 05 Mourin' Glory Story - Harry Nilsson 06 Davy The Fat Boy - Randy Newman 07 I Just Don't Know How To Say Goodbye - Sandy Salisbury 08 P.F. Sloan - Jimmy Webb 09 Pentecost Hotel - Nirvana 10 Sound Of Love - The Bee Gees 11 We Came Through - Scott
  4. "You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth." that's about all that was going through my head whilst watching this deeply christian and moving ceremony. if they were trying to guarantee he wasn't gonna be going to heaven, this was a good way of going about it. rip michael.
  5. AM: Dash 7 - It's Just That Simple BT: Red-Eyed And Blue - I Got You (At The End Of The Century) ST: Summerteeth - Pieholden Suite YHF: Poor Places - Heavy Metal Drummer (but i do like it) AGIB: Company In My Back - I'm A Wheel (but i do like it) SBS: You Are My Face - Shake It Off (although most of the other songs apart from Walken, Either Way and What Light could've gone here) WTA: I'll Fight - the rest of the album is all equally bad
  6. this mix was made for me, and whilst it's not the type of music i listen to, there are quite a few tracks i enjoyed. i need to give it all a few more listens for it to sink in. here is the link for anyone else to download it: http://www.sendspace.com/file/yewzb2 then we can all discuss these mixes a bit more. otherwise it's a bit boring just one person saying what they think.
  7. i'm always happy to be a part of these things, and uploading will be much easier.
  8. of course they bounced music down onto tracks, but i'd assume that they kept individual takes of everything too. maybe they don't, but i'd still imagine that they could remix the music to sound better. how did they do it for LOVE otherwise? and it's already been noted in the other beatles thread that the computer game has stereo remixes (apparently they had to do it for the computer game, because the tracks had to be seperated for the game to work), which have the drums in the middle and a much better balanced stereo sound. have a watch of this and you'll see what i mean - beatles rock band tr
  9. reasonably priced mono mixes - not in a boxset - and remixed stereo so that it doesn't sound shit, maybe?
  10. but the idea of allowing your kid to hang around with ANY famous person, unless you're actually friends with them is weird. the idea of a few of those weirdos then wanting to make money from it, then doesn't appear so odd.
  11. that's why fred astaire was a dancer, rather than a dance critic.
  12. even if he still owns the rights to the songs, and left them to paul mccartney, it simply means that paul mccartney gets royalties from people covering the songs. the beatles have always owned the rights to their ACTUAL recordings, which has turned out to be a bad thing - cos they seem intent on doing nothing interesting with them. if michael jackson had owned the rights to the bealtes recordings we'd have had mono & stereo versions of the albums with bonus tracks and whatever else they'd have to offer, long ago - and the world would have been a better place. oh, RIP Michael Jackson, by
  13. I've got it from a leak - you can find it online if you search. I actually really like Rehearsing My Choir, it's Widow City and to a lesser extent Bitter Tea that seemed like a dip to me, they're not bad I just think they over-complicated the arrangements a bit too much - there's a brilliant acoustic live version of Japanese Slippers, for example, that sounds brilliant and the album version lost the great tune that was there beneath an over-the-top arrangement. Anyway, this album is amazing. There are so many great tunes on it. Keep Me In The Dark has just gone into my favourite position at th
  14. not that there's much competition below Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion, but this is the second best album i've heard this year. can't stop listening to it.
  15. super furry animals - rings around the world / phantom power lambchop - nixon wilco - yhf / agib ween - the mollusk joanna newsom - ys animal collective - feels / mpp bob dylan - love & theft fiery furnaces - blueberry boat grandaddy - the software slump / sumday bonnie prince billy - ease down the road stephen malkmus - stephen malkmus panda bear - person pitch midlake - the trials of van occupanther they all came to mind, but i've probably missed a few good ones.
  16. this is great stuff. best thing they've done since Rehearsing My Choir. the 2 previous albums were a little too synthetic for my liking, and this is very organic sounding - probably the simplest they've ever sounded. anyone that thinks the fiery furnaces are too over-the-shop with their arrangements will be surprised by this. Even in the Rain is just fantastic - for a start.
  17. if you download this firefox extension (and obviously have the firefox browser in the first place - which i'd recommend if you don't) you then just need to click play on the link and then right click your mouse, drag down to 'download helper' - across to 'media' and then download the mp4 that shows up. it's easy! download this and then follow what i said above - works for all embedded files on websites.
  18. i'm not moaning about what he did for the game, i'm moaning that maybe they should have done it for the cd's too, because the stereo versions are not very good (i'm talking about the original ones here, although when they transfered them to cd they were even worse). i've got a bad feeling that the stereo mixes for the game are going to sound better than the stereo versions on the cd, and if they feel that they had to keep the same mixes as the ones released for historical purposes, then the only proper answer to that is that they should have released everything in mono up to and including the
  19. managed to download this all off the internet for free the other day (neil would be very pleased that his music is being distributed by the most cutting edge means of hearing stuff!) and i think i'm just going to make a good double cd out of the best bits and delete the rest. i've never really been a massive fan of live cd's - i think live music works best live or on dvd where the images add something to it all, so there's a huge ammount here that doesn't interest me.
  20. that's kind of annoying, because i was hoping that this would be a good indication of the stereo mixes on the cds. i can understand having the drums to one side and backing singing on the other, but having nothing in the middle of the mix just makes everything sound so seperated and flat. i've got no intention of buying the video game either. i'm also not too worried about having everything after Revolver being in stereo, although i'd rather have it in mono, but Rubber Soul sounds absolutely terrible in stereo on the versions i've heard. the big dilemma i have is that i only want the albums fr
  21. anyone else seen the trailer for rock band: here whilst the drums seem to be on left or right, it doesn't sound like everything is panned as much as it is on the older cd versions, and the main vocals are in the middle - so they must have remixed the music, right? i'm not too sure, plus it's hard to tell with all the fake screams and crowd noise on the music. does anyone have the original stereo vinyl to compare it to? it'll be interesting to find out what you think, if you do. it's also interesting that they've used mono for Day Tripper - don't know why. oh, plus the mono and stereo box sets
  22. look at their eyes - the happy mondays crowd are on drugs. drugs can make anyone dance to anything, plus they've got bez showing them the moves too, all of this helps.
  23. yeah, it's not the greatest review ever, but all the ones written from a positive perspective actually appear to be written by trained chimps. i'd like to read one that actually picks out the good points as well as the bad points of the album. personally i think there are more bad points, but i'd respect the reviews a bit more if they were a bit more even-handed - cos i can't imagine anyone thinks this album is without its faults, nor without some good moments too.
