you're putting everyone on a level playing field. which is nice. but, you have to realise within the population of anywhere there is a vast difference in how important/influential each person is. most people have no impact whatsoever on the world as a whole, so their thoughts and who they are influenced by is not significant. in your world these people are all equal, therefore the more people that believe or act in a certain way, have the largest influence. krafwerk influencing kylie is more significant than kylie influencing 2,000,000 teenagers if the teenagers aren't going to do anything w -

i'm not saying they would. they wouldn't be sitting there having any thought about it in the first place, though, if it wasn't for kraftwerk - because the image wouldn't exist. if everything that a teenage mind did not know or understand did not exist, we'd be very much 'in the shit' (as the kids would say). -

if kylie minogue's personal dresser (or whatever it is) watches a kraftwerk video and thinks let's dress your dancers like that in your next video. and then the kids watch it on mtv and say that looks cool - i'm gonna dress like that. does that not mean that kraftwerk are the bigger influence? - seeing as how the whole image would not have existed without them. it's a bit like someone inventing a flying skateboard compared to someone marketing and selling it. one of those 2 groups of people can exist without the other, but not the other way around (i'll let you decide which way round that is -

you don't have to know about something in any great detail to feel it's impact. popular music feeds off of bastardising anything new/original/cult - there is nothing original about it by nature, so just because the vast majority of people don't know about a 'cool new sound' first hand, they feels the effects second-hand through the pop acts they like. -

i saw them on the brit awards the other night, and all i could think was how have they managed to devolve quite that much after their first album? for one thing, their drummer needs shooting. a bit like the white stripes (post jack white joining the raconteurs and becoming a preening cock of the walk), the kings of leon might very well be influencing young people's haircuts, but not young musicians; or, if they are, then it's not in any progressive/good way. -

The Band pretty much changed the vast majority of American music in the late 60s with one album, so it's not impossible. I'm going to say Animal Collective, just because I hope they will become so in the future - and in saying that, i'm assuming they're being quite influential to bands right now, but this won't be felt for a time to come. -
so, the super furry animals have a new album out on 16th March (digital) and 13th April (physical). here's the track list, and what the band have to say about each song: (source www.twistedear.com) anyway, why aren't we all talking about this? anyone looking forward to it as much as me? anyone think "the best of neil diamond" is a brilliant song title? and whilst we're at it, what's everyone's favourite super furry animals lyrics? and their top 5 songs, and (might as well) their best album? i'll go first: top lyric: We may have fought with tooth and nails, I still recall your b

the folk revival, yeah. but, i bet those old timers they were all stealing the tunes from either didn't care or were a mixed bag politically. which is why, to me that early folk music holds up far better today - cos the music came first. it's not that i have a problem with the civil rights movement and all that - from a politcal stance, it's just that 99% of the music is not enjoyable to listen to.

i don't know. i'd say Manfred Mann, The Byrds, The Hollies etc... had a bigger influence in helping Dylan actually become BIG. Mama You've Been on My Mind I'd associate with Rod Stewart or Fairport Convention - they certainly did a far better job with it than her. she just makes everything sound so maudlin and contrived. but, she was good looking - i will say that. someone like Karen Dalton, who was popular amongst the folk singers of the time, but didn't want to record & make it big (but is kind of being rediscovered now) is an american female folk singer who wipes the floor with Joan Bae

you can actually listen to nearly every track from every album online. on bobdylan.com go here: http://www.bobdylan.com/#/albums choose an album and then choose a track or two to listen to

the coral island - r. m. ballantyne (the greatest adventure book i've ever read. three boys on a coral island. pirates. natives. killing pigs. it's the basis for "lord of the flies" too) tortilla flat - john steinbeck (very funny. and, just like cannery row, it makes you wish you could be just a little like the characters that inhabit the story) if not now, when? - primo levi (a brilliant account of the realities of war on people - and how to survive in such times) the gambler - f. m. dostoevsky (one of his lighter books. very funny in parts. and has a great character - the grandmother. pullin

i'd recommend Ease Down The Road, as it's my favourite. Then maybe The Letting Go, and from there? who knows - the possibilities are endless!

shelagh mcdonald fits the bill. she released 2 brilliant british folk albums with help from fairport convention & fotheringay, took some bad acid, and disappeared off to scotland until very recently. if people like sandy denny, then they should like her too.

he was in moby grape and jefferson airplane. his solo album, oar, he wrote when he was in bellevue after attacking one of his band mates with an axe. little hands might be a good choice of song to include. or an upbeat song omaha which he wrote in moby grape

That moment when an album clicks with you?
Synthesizer Patel replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
it depends what you mean by click really. i don't think i truly understand any of my favourite albums - which is why i can keep coming back to them - but i kind of knew i liked all of them, or would like all of them, the very first time i heard them. -
i'd put bluish right up the top too. hell i'll rank them for fun: 01 bluish 02 guys eyes 03 summertime clothes 04 no more runnin 05 taste 06 brother sport 07 my girls 08 in the flowers 09 daily routine 10 lion in a coma 11 also frightened

it's not entirely unlike it, but i wouldn't say it's the same either. some people think they are both very reverby in sound, and there is a sense of repetition within the songs as a result of sampling, but not as much as person pitch on both counts - in a way, the new album contains almost traditional style songs. i'd recommend people listening even if they didn't like person pitch, cos you never know - you might enjoy it.
-
They are both excellent, but I think I'd recommend Feels first, even though in lots of ways Person Pitch is a better album. you can hear a couple of tracks from Person Pitch here: http://www.myspace.com/rippityrippity and track four from here is off of Feels: http://www.myspace.com/animalcollectivetheband

If you liked My Girls then you should definately get hold of a copy - everything else on the album is equally as good, and some of it better. It's nothing like Sung Tongs at all.

i just stole them from a google lyric search. this is what daily routine comes up as: Just a sec more in my bed Hope my machine's working right When it's just precisely tuned That shit's gonna be so nice Make sure my kid's got a jacket Keys and coat and shoes and hat Strap a stroller to my back Bouncing along every crack What good is it to make it fast Sing a song to pass the playground What can I do as traffic pass Guard my girl from muffler's black gas What can I do to make it fast Pop a jump but not too hard And we'll end up at the ramp Stop and look at the traffic sign

it's a very cool video, especially when they turn into water. Is it much to admit I need A solid soul and the blood I bleed With a little girl, and by my spouse I only want a proper house I don't care for fancy things Or to take part in a precious race And children cry for the one who has A real big heart and a father's grace I don't mean to seem like I care about material things like a social status I just want four walls and adobe slabs for my girls (oh, and poptodd - you are allowed to come and talk in the other animal collective thread if you want!)
