Today's Pop Market deal is Europe '72, 180 gram, 3 lp release with all the packaging. The listing linked to this video, which I'll share in honor of Phil's birthday today:

Damn, no Boston area shows. Ugh.

LazyLightning55 has a bunch of good Beacon and Bowlive videos posted. As does MarcMillman1 (for Bowlive).

Shug put it perfectly in both his recent posts. (well, maybe I wouldn't say they're *without peer*). They are musical virtuosos with the ability to play a wide range of genres. I love the covers. Keep in mind, they are doing what 10 or 12 shows at the Beacon. Mixing in the covers is a huge plus. Personally, my level of enjoyment with a band is often directly tied to the quality of the songs they pull out to cover. And Warren maybe without peer in that regard, in all of his bands. There's been almost 100 years of great blues, jazz, rock, etc. I don't want that music to not be played, I

Picked up Honky Tonk today. Read some great reviews, but after an initial casual listen I found it pretty boring. Nothing grabbed me. Maybe it's too traditional country for my tastes. I'll give it a proper listen, seeing them in Boston.

Do people really have a problem with them doing Dickey songs? Not me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqPXCpmIFI8

This should be so much fun

I think Torbert had passed by then. A shame, loved him in NRPS. Hello Mary Lou!

I can tell you what I remember about the Zak Wylde show, I don't remember much. I'll start by acknowledging that he's not my cup of tea at all, and seeing him play with the Allmans was nauseating to me. My memory is that he got the call to fill in because he used to play in a cover band that did a lot of Allmans tunes, so he knew the material. He spent the show preening and demonstrating like a heavy metal rock star would, which was so out of place I can't begin to tell you. I don't remember much about the music and I never listened to the show. As I wrote above, I was so disgusted that t

The band's low point as far as I'm concerned. I was friggin pissed! Not only at Dickey for being the white trash that he is and getting arrested, but at the entire organization for not cancelling the show. To drag my ass down to Great Woods to all of a sudden be told that Zak Wylde and his bullseye guitar and heavy metal moves was playing in the *Allman Brothers Band."??? I stopped seeing them for a number of years after, I swore they weren't getting any of my money. Of course I settled down and came back to the fold, but it took a long time.

Butch went on record after the 2009 Beacon run, the entire run was a tribute to Duane and invovled just about everyone he ever played with showing up (every night of which was outstanding) saying that the band tried to put the bad stuff aside and invited Dickey to play in tribute to Duane, and Dickey refused. Butch said that was it with Dickey, they'll never play with him again after that. Or that's how I remember the interview. As someone who's been seeing the Allmans since 1973, I simply do not miss Dickey. Nothing against him or his playing (even though unbenknownst to me he landed in j

I don't know why its a slap in the face anymore so than the fact that they're still playing and playing without Dickey. I don't think they've ever done Ramblin Man since Betts is out of the band, but Eat A Peach is a quintessential Allmans album and I'm happy to see a full blown Blue Sky in the setlist. Elizabeth Reed is a Dicey song too. A good review of last night's show over at Hidden Track. http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/review-and-photos-the-allman-brothers-band-welcome-guests-offer-debuts-and-classics-beacon-theatre/

That's funny, I specifically looked to see who wrote the piece and didn't notice at the top it was Fricke's column.

This guy at Rolling Stone liked the show: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/blogs/alternate-take/allman-brothers-at-the-beacon-theater-a-euphoric-shoot-out-20130304?utm_source=dailynewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter

Don't mean to put pressure on you Rhino, but I got to echo everything said here. SS is an integrated whole, and Sunday is an integral piece.

I've been meaning to read that for a long time, and never have gotten to it. I understand Levon really rips on Robbie. I read Levon's wife Barbara wouldn't let Robbie play at the Love for Levon concert, even though he visited him in the hospital shortly before he passed. Here comes Mavis to the stage at LfL.

Speaking of Sundays at SS, I'm sitting here watching Love for Levon, Larry singing Wheels On Fire, on AXS tv (dvr) as I read this. That was a great Sunday afternoon on Joe's Field.

Reading Hoffman forums, the first two DP vinyl releases were taken from the CDs. http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/the-grateful-dead-%E2%80%93-dick%E2%80%99s-picks-vol-1-vol-2-now-available-on-vinyl.297405/

I think this has already been discussed here (I think *I* discussed it here), the famous Fillmore East 2-13-70 show, DP 4, is coming out on vinyl, remastered from the original master tapes. On 6 lps. Too bad that the Dark Star (best ever???) has to be cut and spread over 2 sides. What a bummer to have to flip that in the middle, but was apparently done that way to maximize the quality of the audio. And the weirdest thing, the last side of vinyl will be blank! Talk about Dead Air. It's a lot of $$, but I'm sure I'll end up buying it. http://brookvalerecords.com/brookvale-records-to-work

They've been doing The Other One jam out of Black Hearted Woman for years. Don't know whether that's Dickey era or post.
-
He makes that pretty clear in his book. As well as the Dead's fans. To my surprise, Gregg recounts that Dickey was the Dead fan in the band, or one of them.

I loved Woody in the band, I was fortunate to see him with the Allmans many times. Not to take anything away from Oteil, who's playing I also thoroughly enjoy, but in a very different way. But whether the Haynes, Woody and Betts lineup is hard to beat? I can make a very strong case that Derek, Warren and Oteil do. Derek just drops my jaw all the time. And I perceive the chemistry between him and Warren to be much better. We've lost some Dickey tunes from the setlist, but Jessica remains frequently played and Blue Sky has found its way back since the Eat A Peach anniversary shows. I neve

My assumption as well. Which leads me to speculate that the "special guests" will be Wilco. A la the Levon Helm Band set on Sunday.
