  1. I guess this just shows my maturity level, but my favorite part of that article was this quote: And I agree that sleep paralysis is an excellent possibility for at least some of people's experiences. I've experienced that and can attest that it is scary as hell, though have never had any of the kind of hallucinations that might explain some of people's alien/ghost stories. My episodes of sleep paralysis usually coincided with periods of bad panic attacks. Which I now blame on aliens!
  2. I spent a few minutes watching Yo Gabba Gabba with my kids the other day and am now pretty sure they're already here and the secret is out.
  3. I think you meant to say "phuture".
  4. There is undoubtedly some truth to this. Being that neither band ever really had a lot of "hits", I'd say that most people are more familiar with the sometimes-cartoonish scenes (and stereotypes thereof) that surround the bands than they are with the music itself. If its true that you're either on the bus or off the bus, then most people are decidedly off the bus...and the bus' windows are dark and they can't see what's going on inside, but a lot of those people getting in sure look mighty strange!
  5. Even after I made the switch to CDs, my car only had a tape player and so I had to record everything onto tapes to make it portable. When I finally went all-digital it seemed like such a cool thing at first because of the ability to jump around at will, but I don't think its a coincidence that my attention span has gone to hell. Something about tapes made it easy to just sit back a listen without getting the itchy next-button finger or think about what else I'd rather be listening to. Sometimes limitations have their perks.
  6. side 1 Dark Star side 2 Dark Star (continued) Ok, in all seriousness, I'll have to look for some of my old mixes. I'm not sure anyone I gave them to ever enjoyed them as much as I did--I have a tendency to genre-hop a lot, so I totally agree that the best mixes are all over the place! CD mixes are nice and convenient, but tapes allowed for so much more weirdness in the editing and transitions, which made for a more interesting experience.
  7. I think that's the same weekend as ComFest, which should make it a pretty fun time, all around, in ol' Cowtown.
  8. 30 minutes of musicians "wanking off" is frequently less boring than 3 minutes of "tasteful restraint"
  9. When people mention Bruce Springsteen, the mental image that comes to mind is Kirk Cameron and Alan Thicke going to a Springsteen concert in an episode of Growing Pains. I don't know how that bit of TV trivia got lodged in my head as a child, but I think it explains why I have always struggled to take his music seriously.
  10. My oldest daughter is named Jolene. Its funny how many people burst into song when they meet her.
  11. If this was a fraternity there would be more kegs. Lots more. And hazing. Hey, that might be fun! We should try it. Except that most of us are too old and it would end up being like that Will Ferrell movie. Also, Hepcat was a pretty good ska band back in the 90s, but I don't see how that is relevant here.
  12. The issue appears to be more widespread than just Florida and South Carolina:
  13. This might as well be called "list the first 5 song titles you can think of". My favorites tend to shift a lot. Tears Are In Your Eyes Blue Line Swinger Flying Lesson (Hot Chicken #1) Stockholm Syndrome Nothing But You And Me
  14. WTF with all the articles about Gholston being too intelligent to be a good football player? That maybe he doesn't "love the game" enough, which is kind of bizarre. (and I'm not sure how that reflects on all the other players--they're dumb enough to really love the game, I guess) I don't know the guy personally, so I can't answer that question about his commitment. But if this guy is just going through the motions for the paycheck, then damn I'd love to see what happens if a fire gets lit under him because he is a tremendous athlete and I'd be thrilled to have him on my team. Dude is a mon
  15. Here in Columbus I've heard at least a few "Thank you, Cleveland!!"s.
  16. I dunno, when Mighigan is getting excited about high school juniors who expect to walk into a starting QB job on day one, things don't sound too promising for this year, do they? In other news, this kid is this close to committing to UM. Go Blue!!!
  17. So you're saying I should be on the lookout for him here, then. Hey, I can't blame the guy. I spent my fair share of time there in college. I doubt OSU is going too easy on its O-line these days, though, after getting outrun by a quick D-line again in the championship game.
  18. Well, this is kind of unusual... Family values eroded? Wha?? I mean, I won't pass up an opportunity to poke fun at Michigan, but seriously, wtf does that mean? I won't argue if he's talking about Rich Rod being a douchebag and maybe that's what he means, but Family Values is such a loaded cultural term to toss around and I have absolutely no idea what that has to do with a football team.
  19. We may yet resort to cry-it-out with Corrine. My wife remains opposed (although she's generally not the one staying up with her! ), but last night I was ready to. As it was, I let her go longer than usual...but she kept waking the baby, too, so I dunno. She generally sleeps really well in her crib in her room for the first 3-4 hours of the night, but after that it is a crapshoot from night to night. Some nights she'll wake up once, want some milk, and go back to sleep. Other nights she needs to be held and rocked and carried around for however long it takes to get her asleep enough that
  20. Thank you for the reassurance! I was awake most of last night. The baby is a great sleeper so far--he just wakes up every 3 hours like clockwork to eat, but he isn't too fussy and goes back to sleep easily enough. Our one year old, on the other hand, is not such a great sleeper. So she kept me up for the 3 solid hours that Ian was sleeping--crying and wanting Daddy--she only wants me during the night when she is fussy, which is cute and someday I absolutely will miss our late-night bonding time, but I think in total I was awake 12:00-5:00 and finally caught about 45 min of sleep before th
  21. And yet it is perfect for a curling team!
  22. I kept waiting for someone to call me up and offer me ridiculous sums of money to publish the first pictures of him, but it never happened. I guess that bitch J-Lo beat me to that idea.
  23. Since everybody loves a baby thread, I thought I'd share that my wife gave birth to a beautiful baby boy last week on tax day. In honor of this, we briefly considered naming him Sam (or Deduction), but finally settled upon Ian. Check out the hair on this kid! I still can't believe it myself, but this is our 4th (fourth! omg) kid. 3 girls prior to this--the youngest being just barely a year old, so this was waaaay sooner than we had expected to have a 4th, but hey, things happen. And I'm glad they did, because this little dude rocks. (and, I gotta admit, its gonna be nice to finally h
