  1. I finally saw Synecdoche, New York - definitely a top ten movie of the decade for me. Also realized that Philip Seymour Hoffman could read all the names out of a phone book and I'd watch it to the bitter end.

  4. My two favoritest bands in the universe are heading "into the studio" this month, that mythical place where good things happen. Ed from Radiohead: "The vibe in the camp is fantastic at present, and we head off into the studio in January to continue on from the work we started last Summer .. I am so genuinely excited about what we’re doing, but for obvious reasons I can’t divulge anything more.. anyway we all love surprises don’t we? 10 years ago we were all collectively (that’s the band) in the land of Kid A .. and although hugely proud of that record, it wasn’t a fun place to be .. What’s r

  6. There's a lot to support the conspiracy theory that our real beef with the Taliban revolved around a pipeline from the Caspian Sea through Afghanistan. Here is an interesting timeline, note how bin Laden began launching attacks on US embassies and interests began after negotiations between the Taliban and Unocal fell through: http://www.ringnebula.com/Oil/Timeline.htm
  7. Beverly Hills by Weezer is a pretty execrable bit of excrement.
  8. How so? It sounds like every other too laid back for words Dead performance I've ever heard.

  10. Ugh, that song is puke-worthy, as is everything else I've heard from Snow Patrol.
  11. Funny (and true) writeup in the Villiage Voice: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/archives/2009/12/the_50_worst_so_43.php As a concession to a vile, contemptible decade marked by commerce over reason, we pleaded to our editors at the Village Voice to let us publish the No. 1 entry as one of those annoying listicles that's also a photo gallery that you have to click through over and over again--but they refused. (Good thing we're not getting paid by the pageview.) But if there's one thing we learned this decade, it's that the people still love lists--so let's put forth our reasons for dec
  12. Yeah, but the accompanying song is pretty awful too. Here's another one: Walk across the courtyard, Towards the library. I can hear the insects buzz on the leaves, 'neath my feet. Ramble up the stairwell, To the hall of books. Since we got the interweb these hardly get used. Duck into the men's room, Combing through my hair. When God gave us mirrors he had no idea. Looking for a lesson In the periodicals, There I spy you listening to the AM radio. Karen of the Carpenters, Singing in the rain. Another lovely victim of the mirror's evil way. It's not like you're not trying, With a pe

She take you down easy Going down to her knees Going down to the devil Down down at ninety degrees She blowing me crazy 'til my ammunition is dry She's using her head again She's using her head She's using her head again I'm justa giving the dog a bone Giving the dog a bone, giving the dog a bone Giving the dog a bone, giving the dog a bone She's no Mona Lisa No she's no playboy star But she'll send you to heaven Then explode you to Mars She's using her head again She's using her head She's using her head again I'm
  15. I'm 1000% down with all the remakes: Titans, A-Team, Karate Kid. Why not? The originals weren't sacred texts. Maybe because we saw them as kids that we ascribe a Holy Sanctimonius Power to these horrible movies / TV shows. I mean, there are far worse crimes against humanity..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSqfXbkqi8I

Your six year old must be a hell of an aerospace engineer, since they have been using the term since the 1950s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unobtainium Engineers have long (since at least the 1950s) used the term unobtainium when referring to unusual or costly materials, or when theoretically considering a material perfect for their needs in all respects save that it doesn't exist. By the 1990s, the term was widely used, including in formal engineering papers such as Towards Unobtainium [new composite materials for space applications]. The word unobtainium may well have been coined with

I'd say the script was better than anything Michael Bay has directed, and better than anything George Lucas has written. I also realize that's a pretty low bar.
  19. I thought this deserved its own thread. I just caught the 10:20 PM show last night, reluctantly, when a friend dragged me to it who had just seen it the night before. We saw it on an IMAX in 3D, and I have to fess up to being a blown away by it. I was not looking forward to it, thought the trailer sucked (it frankly doesn't do the film justice). I see it sweeping all the technical category Oscars (easily) and getting a nod for Best Picture (easily, now that it's been expanded to 10 nominees). On top of everything - the flawlessly executed effects, CGI, etc., this film has a really big heart, a

  21. I really hope he makes it. People on Twitter also confirm he is still alive this morning but on life support. A great song of his off his new album, hugely moving and sad even before this turn of events: I am a man I am self aware And everywhere I go You’re always right there with me I flirted with you all my life Even kissed you once or twice And to this day I swear it was nice But clearly I was not ready When you touched a friend of mine I thought I would lose my mind But I found out with time That really, I was not ready Oh Death, Oh Death, Oh Death, Really, I'm not ready Oh De
  22. I'd actually argue that for a metal song, it's actually "deep". I mean we're not talking Dylan here, but it's kind of endearing how it grasps for some deeper commentary on how society conditions us to either play by their rules, or "go off the rails" and eat our meals out of dumpsters. I especially like the line about the media selling predefined roles to us, a somewhat progressive idea considering this was written in the 70s: All aboard! Ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaa! Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Crazy, but that's how it goes Millions of people living as foes Maybe it's not too late To l
