  1. Funny, but Obama is hardly the first black man I view as simply a man - I've known many black men personally who were just men, and many media personalities who also crossed over color barriers who I though as simply just men and not black men. I don't see Obama being fundamendally different on that regard than many who have come before him.
  2. Is this you being calm? I don't think anyone here or in the media is doing that. If you could provide examples of someone saying "he is black, therefore he will be a better president" or a "worse president", I would love to see that. I think there's nearly universal agreement that his strengths as a leader will have nothing to do with his race. What the mainstream media has focused on, on the other hand, are the things I just discussed.
  3. Explain to this kid at 1:10 in that we've moved far beyond it and that he has no reason to feel the emotional weight of what's happened: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/...ref=videosearch I think you run the risk of being cold-hearted to ignore what this means to some people, and to suggest that their voices shouldn't be heard. I get what you're saying regarding Obama's candidacy not forefronting race (along the lines of what a Jesse Jackson did in 1984) and that race didn't play a significant role in any of the political discourse, the debates or speeches. Even that seems a little
  4. Palin thought Africa was a country, not a continent: She also would throw tantrums, refused to prep for Katie Couric, didn't know the US, Canada and Mexico were members of the North American Free Trade Agreement, she took the prank Sarkozy phone call without letting McCain or any of the staff know and proceeded to boast about running for President in 8 years, was told to limit purchases to around $25,000 for six suits and spent the $150,000 on clothing for clothes for the family and purchases of shoes, luggage and jewelry. http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics...icas_a_con.html ht
  5. The lynching pic by the way had nothing to do with any point El F was making - it just blew me away how Obama wouldn't be able to mount this campaign in another era, when he wouldn't even be allowed to campaign or even travel through certain regions of this country without bringing about that kind of response. Maybe this is stating the obvious, but since most of us were raised in an era relatively free of that, it's helpful to remember that we have changed as a country, and for the better.
  6. Right, but if Obama were white, we'd be happy about his accomplishments, character and qualities, but we wouldn't be talking about how historic this election is. That's why people are talking about race today. Everyone can agree that Obama is more than a pretty (black) face.
  7. What does "transcended his race" mean exactly?
  8. Imagine how arrogant we would be if the Cubs won it all this year after all that hype? Thank goodness Obama is a closer.
  9. Well whatever it is, if it can't produce CNN-style holograms, it's garbage.
  10. What are you engineering these days? Hopefully not the Razr.
  11. Very cool... I dug up a nice photo comparison - 1968 - In Grant Park, demonstrators "take the hill" and climb onto the statue of a Civil war general after the police refuse to let them march. 2008
  12. Put this in your pipe and smoke it - many still associate Grant Park with the 1968 Democratic Convention rioting, which my father witnessed first hand as he drove along Michigan as he was leaving Medical school. He was with me at Grant Park last night, one of a number of people who probably witnessed both events. It was great seeing Chicago overcome that. * - slight correction - most of the riots occurred in Lincoln Park, but there was some activity in Grant park with the Chicago police clubbing a teenager who was lowering an American flag and others who tried to protect him.
  13. Your "revolution" is over, Mr. Limbaugh! Condolences! The bums lost! My advice is, do what your parents did! Get a job, sir! The bums will always lose-- do you hear me, Limbaugh? THE BUMS WILL ALWAYS LOSE! There, that felt better.
  14. Yeah, of course I am. (kidding, not ignorant)
  15. http://www.wilcoworld.net/ Congratulations to our Senator, our friend, and our President-elect Barack Obama on his historic victory last night.
  16. His "crowd" would readily tear him apart if it would save more aborted fetuses and speed up the End of Times.
  17. Looks like North Carolina is also blue which will raise Obama's electoral vote total to 364. If Missouri goes blue (it is still a dead heat) the Electoral total will be 375. Both states were once slave states, of course.
  18. Just got back from the rally, kind of punch drunk and slaphappy.
  19. I didn't buy any buttons on the way out of Grant Park tonight, but this one made me wish I had.
  20. Very excited, Obama campaign e-mailed me a Grant Park ticket at the last minute (4:23 PM) so I will be heading down there.
  21. Its too bad this party didn't happen a few days ago when I was in KY with you.
  22. Doesn't bother me. Since Obama is as much of a communist as Palin is a vampire. McCarthyism really worked out well for the Republican Party the first time around, didn't it? But I have a feeling that most of the right-wingnuts bandying about the "C" word don't even know who Joe McCarthy was.
  23. Except the ones that say Obama is winning, which are probably correct.
