  2. I don't think you'll find a major elected official from either party who actually supports secession. Perry's offhand comment wasn't exactly a firm committal and he has said many times since that he does not believe that the nation should be altered. I think you're mistaken.
  3. Blame the media. It's not newsworthy. It's a contentious divorce. That said, he was released and not charged and the police reported that his wife's story didn't seem to match the facts. 100% legal (and encouraged by Texas lawmen) in this state. Let me Google that for you: http://blog.chron.com/txpotomac/2012/11/commentary-democrats-spoke-of-secession-in-2004-after-bush-was-re-elected/
  4. A little bit of good news: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/11/us/colorado-lawmaker-concedes-defeat-in-recall-over-gun-law.html
  5. His artwork has improved a lot over the last few years!
  6. That's pretty much the point with concealed carry. I can remember people from both parties talking about secession every time the other party wins the White House. That's all it is, really: talk. I don't think anyone has ever been serious about it. He "got away" because a jury found him not guilty and it could be argued that any demonization was a reaction to the beatification of Trayvon Martin by the press, politicians and celebrities.
  7. The cops say he didn't have a gun and so does the complainant. What's so difficult to figure out?
  8. No, but I'm quite familiar with the laws concerning concealed carry.
  9. I'd like to see the media approach the Syrian chemical weapons issue a little more critically. Russia and Syria jumped at a chance to make John Kerry's offhand remark a reality, but I can't see how they can possibly disarm themselves in a reasonable time period. The United States, Russia and many other nations vowed to eliminate their chemical weapons stockpiles more than 15 years ago, but despite huge budgets and more than a decade of work, much of the stockpile still remains more than a year after the deadline. Syria is believed to have the third-largest stockpile of chemical weapons in th
  10. I have not seen any figures that are even close to that. It'll likely be about twice that number. There were never that many American troops in Afghanistan; I think the number was about 100,000 at its peak. And more than half that amount were added after Obama took office, so I guess he deserves credit for winding down a war that he wound up? Evidence: no gun was found. Sworn statement: Zimmerman's wife admits that she never saw a gun and that he never threatened her with a gun.
  11. I believe what the police reported and his wife swore to.
  12. I do not recall hearing much of that. The Iraq war was considered lost by most during 2006-2007 until the surge turned things around. It ended rather well, at least as far as things looked a couple of years earlier.
  13. Assuming he was carrying a concealed weapon properly and legally, his firearm would not have been brandished or displayed if he wasn't in a life-threatening situation. That would make both the attorney's statement and the police department's statement accurate and truthful.
  14. There are still 60,000 American troops in Afghanistan.
  15. There are a thousand possible answers, but I think we can all agree that a war has to actually end before we can debate whether or not the war was ended successfully.
  16. Before you start running your victory lap, I think it's important to remember 3 things: 1) The Iraq war was wound down based on an agreement between Iraq and the United States that was hammered out and signed by President Bush in 2008. 2) The United States military lost 645 troops in Afghanistan during 87 months of Bush's presidency; 1626 troops have died during 56 months of Obama's presidency. 3) The war in Afghanistan is far from over and American casualties are certain to increase. It's far too early to call the wind-down a success. As it stands, Afghanistan is a mess.
  17. He/she is handling incontinence better than most teens would.
  18. Google says it's $144k. I'll bet the union bosses make much more than that.
  19. I was remembering this: http://viachicago.org/topic/48597-general-political-thread/?p=1523810
  20. I don't think anyone has said otherwise. Here's my district's salary schedule. I looked at a couple of the nearby districts and they were similar.
  21. I know several teachers and none of them are wealthy, but their quality of life seems fine to me. In my district the starting salary for a new teacher with no experience is $47,000 for a 10-month work year; there are additional stipends for advanced degrees. That's well above the median income for the city. A pair of young teachers would pull in about $100,000 and that would enable them to live very comfortably here.
  22. I'll pass, but I'll let Jeb Bush (another family acquaintance) know that you think he was a better governor than Rick Scott. I'm quite certain that no bragging took place.
