Jeff Tweedy on the "Hilarious World of Depression" podcast
kidsmoke replied to jff's topic in Just A Fan
Thanks for posting this. It's a terrific podcast. Jeff is pretty damned brave about facing his demons. I admire that in him. Sometime around 2007, I was talking to him...I forget the exact context, I think maybe I was saying I disagreed with how the acts were ranked...but I mentioned the Coachella of 2005, which Wilco had been slated for...at that point Jeff reminded me, "I wasn't at that one because I was in rehab". I was embarrassed because I knew that but had briefly forgotten. (I never go to Coachella even though it's close. Too hipster-festival-y for me) But my point is, he was just so -
It's always so cool when an artist gives just that little bit more of themselves, when they don't have to. He sounds like a great guy in RL. This is good news, right? How will it affect your job?

Congratulations! How great to hear how good you feel already! I've heard nothing but good from people I know who have had these.

So today I got an email. Sender listed as "Jeff Link". What does it say about my Wilco addiction that my immediate reaction was, "Oh, cool - a Jeff link! Wonder what it's about?" Huh. Turns out Jeff Link is a political guy who heads up the group One Nation, Indivisible. Color me disappointed. I notice you looked at the Jeff link, too.

I hope you are both having "thoughts", as well.

Sounds instantly familiar. Love John's voice! -
Jon, I am so very sorry. I lost my own dad 5 years ago in December, and while I have finally come to a place of peace, I remember so well how wrong the whole world felt, how empty, without his presence. Losing a parent is unlike any other loss...your anchor in life! For whatever it's worth, I can tell you you'll never lose him completely. I don't know about an afterlife, or reincarnation, or whatever might come next. But I know you can't lose him completely because he is so much a part of you. He'll live on in you. xo

Your friend has written a powerful piece that speaks directly to the heart of being human. If our own behaviors and actions are not what defines us, if instead it is something as arbitrary as where we chanced to be born, then what is even the point of trying to live a good and useful life? If we are branded upon being born, how do we ever prove our worth? Your friend's family has done everything right. My heart breaks for them that they are experiencing such unwarranted hatred. I am committed all over again to doing whatever I can to remove Trump and his foul, coldhearted government.

I haven't seen them in too long, need to remedy that. Sounds like you had a perfect concert evening!

But that's just it...I think Sandy Hook DID have an effect, did change some minds. It's a shame some people are so intractible, there are some minds that no amount of reason will change. We all know some of these people. But as more and more "undecided" fence-sitters wake up to the realities of our current gun state, I think we can eventually arrive at a groundswell of opposition that yields results. It won't be easy, and probably not quick, but there's no other sane approach but to keep resisting.

Keep doing it though. Hearts and minds can change. Sometimes it takes just one pivotal event...maybe the LV shootings will finally be that breakthrough to many. This is me, being hopeful.
