If you make it into the playoffs enough times, you'll win it all eventually. Getting into the playoffs is way harder than winning once you're there. The worst team in the league will beat the best team in the league in a 7 game series from time to time. Billy Beane has more than proven himself by this point.

My dad has all of the Bill James Baseball Abstract books starting in 1981. When I was living at home I read through those old ones all the time. Great stuff. His Historical Abstract might be the greatest baseball book in existance. Fuck that....greatest book of any kind.

Totally forgot. Thanks for the reminder.

Me too.

We'd probably be done talking about it (at least for now) on this board if you weren't putting up such a fight about it, bobbob. I'm just sayin'.
-
No, but I'm happy to make an argument about how the saves category has made a bunch of managers complete idiots when it comes to managing their bullpen. Mariano Rivera is the man though.
-
I like how the free agents you go after are all guys who were on the team before.

I think the Jamesian view of run production would be that Runs Created would be the best metric to use, no? Or RC27 or whatever.
-
And that's why I'm still worried. The White Sox are obviously a better pitching team than they've been so far this year. Once they come back to their median they should be preventing runs fairly well, and their offense probably won't slow down much. Could get scary. I hope it doesn't.

Pointless to look it up anyway, as Anderson's sample size is still really small.

Wow, I think in the couple of years that I've been posting here, this is the very first show that not a single poster attended.

I don't know, I live in Chicago and it sounded pretty great to me.

Rocker-turned-preacher pursuing pop fame again

This is going to be a huge hit. -
It was on Countdown (Olbermann's MSNBC show).

Who knows. I'm sure the psychological aspects of everything affect every team differently. But yeah, the Tigers have had a lot of come from behind wins (mostly against poor teams -- this was two days in a row against the Royals). If they snooze through the first few innings like that against the White Sox or A's next week, they don't stand a chance.
-
I think it's definately a for-obsessive-fans-only type of thing, but I really enjoyed it.

Fuck the Bombers. I'm so excited about my Tigers still leading things at this point. It's weird though -- if the Tigers only get the wild card, or even if they just barely missed the playoffs, this season would still be such a massive success, and yet disappointing.. I mean, they haven't had a winning season since 1993, and they haven't even really been close since 1997. It's weird that, at the beginning of the season, most Tigers fans would have been ecstatic with an 85 win season, but now it will almost seem disappointing to not win the division outright.
-
All three AL divisions are going to come right down to the wire. It's gonna be sweet.
-
It's not like there's a ton of shame in losing to the Yankees. In New York no less. But wait, I have a role to play here. That being the role of the trash talking fan of the interdivisional rival. Take that White Sox! You lost to the Yankees! Hardy har!
-
I guess in a 162 game season, some losses are bound to come along, eh?
-
Might have something to do with the LOSING!!!!! Not that the Tigers victory was all that impressive (it was against the lowly Royals after all, and did include a late inning blown lead). But a win is a win, and a 3 game lead is slightly more comfortable than a 2 game lead. You have to take the wins however you can get them.

Maladroit had a couple decent songs. But considering Rivers once claimed that he wrote 8-12 songs every single day, you'd think he'd have more than a couple good songs and 10 pieces of shit to put on an album every few years.

According to Olbermann, Peter Gammons is walking, talking, and pissed that the doctors wouldn't let him go to Pittsburgh for the All Star Game. Good news.

Sportscenter just announced that Barry Bonds's attorneys have started to plan a defense, and they expect an indictment on tax evasion and perjury charges to come next week. It's on.

But Green Day just made their best album.
