  1. Семнадцать мгновений весны (17 Moments of Spring) - 1973 - USSR
  2. No, I haven't. This was my first Celyan film but certainly not the last. In fact I stumbled upon this one accidentally and loved it. I am curious to watch Three Monkeys now that I have had my introduction to his works. I will definitely look into Distant, as well, as it looks to have much of the same tone that was so appealing to me in Climates. One more thing about Climates...The closing segment was one of my favorites in recent memory. I had to rewind and watch a few times it was so perfect.
  3. I watched a couple memorable Turkish films recently: Bal (Honey) - 2010 Iklimler (Climates) - 2006 Both of these films left an impression on me in one way or another, either for a healthy dose of cultural exploration or by charming my eyes with some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world.
  4. My wife and I have been enjoying this the past couple nights. It's a little different than the stuff we normally watch, and surprisingly good, considering neither of us really care much for the supernatural/horror type flicks. Lars Von Trier is the mind behind this four part Danish mini series, so its qualities lie beyond a script and storyline.
  5. I finally watched How I Ended This Summer. Excellent film. I also thought of Herzog during this film as the pace was unusual at times. The fog scene was typical Herzog style as he kept the camera on the man as he walked and walked while the fog thickened. I saved this one to watch again at a later date...perhaps when my Russian improves a little.
  6. My favorite 5 that have received the most continual play through my speakers: Thurston Moore - Demolished Thoughts Other Lives - Tamer Animals EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints Snowmine - Laminate Pet Animal Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
  7. Has anybody heard the latest release by Oklahoma's Other Lives? I have been loving it for the past month or so. Here's Pitchfork's review: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/15545-tamer-animals/ I caught them a few weeks ago when they came through San Diego and they informed me they would be back at the end of June touring with The Rosebuds. I can't wait to see both of these bands again and together. Anyway, this is one of my favorite albums so far this year. Check it out.
  8. I'm glad you mentioned this. My wife (Russian) saw this in the theater in Novosibirsk a couple years ago and highly recommended it. I downloaded it but wasn't able to find subtitles in English. Now I am reminded of this and need to go watch it. Thanks for the reminder and another great recommendation, Beltmann.
  9. Another classic of Soviet Cinema. A must see for anyone interested in Russian history and/or "The Great Patriotic War". Idi i Smotri outlines the atrocities commited by The Nazis against Belorussian peasants in 1943. An Excellent film.
  10. I was just thinking the same thing. My son and I watched it last night. This DVD set is worth checking out, even if you're not a fan of Rush but a fan of music. There is much to like about this band besides the music.
  11. Yeah, not really too shocked - she has excellent taste in films. It was kinda funny because I was watching it last night and she called me right after I finished watching "the scene". We talked for a minute and she asked me "isn't Monica Belucci beautiful in that film?" Anyway...she made a similar comment about the graphic violence in the film being "real" and therefore acceptable. My personal opinion: I can't stop thinking about the film and will likely watch it again and analyze. I Stand Alone will be watched very soon.
  12. I started watching this one last night. My girlfriend saw this years ago and recommended it to me. I'm still in disbelief that she was not only able to make it through some of the scenes, but actually enjoyed it enough to recommend that I watch it. Should I be worried?
  13. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest After being rather unimpressed with 2007's overly hyped Cryptograms I was hesitant to put this one on. I remember seeing Cryptograms on so many best of 2007 lists...I thought it was a complete bore. I also saw them live back in late 2005/early 2006 and they about made my ears bleed; I was actually embarrassed for them. But this album is great - easily in my top 10.
  14. Yes, I enjoyed it very much. This was actually my second time watching it, my first being a couple years ago, prior to me ever visiting Russia. I have since spent considerable time there and wanted to revisit some of the vast landscapes of the north western region. This film also left a lasting impression on me for many reasons, particularly the relationship between father and children that seems to be quite the norm in Russian society. I have watched many films from Russia and USSR in the past few years and this one is one of my favorites.
  15. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Some good songs but he loses me fast.
  16. I enjoyed this one a few nights ago: El último verano de La Boyita http://www.laboyitafilm.com/
  17. My thoughts exactly. I listened to the entire album the first time as felt it was just ok. But this song is brilliant; definitely my favorite on the album.
  18. What about 11/28/09? I LOVE this version. I'm glad you had a great time last night. I'm listening to the show right now and look forward to hearing all the Livephish boards after each show. Sounds good so far.
  19. I gotta agree with Solace here...The Besnard Lakes album is fabulous! I enjoyed it immensely the first time through and it just gets better with each listen. The Beach House record is a keeper too.
