  1. that show was good. the scarlet fire was excellent as was the surprise dark star. 93 spring and fall had some nice moments. the last richfield run was horrible. i think what keeps me from listening to much of that era is vince. he just didn't fit, although, at the time i was a supporter.
  2. there's some pretty bad stuff out there. not as bad as it could have been if phil and bob lost it like garcia did. jerry's playing really didn't start to go to hell consistently until late 91 as far as i can see. add in his voice decline and it was pretty rough go there. that being said, jerry band in the 90s always rocked. go figure.
  3. 85 does have some good stuff. those mid 80s shows are kind of hard for me to listen too. garcia slurs so much and brent sounds like he's playing a toy piano. it's no wonder most of the archive shows that have been released officially have been from the 70s, early 80s and late 80s/90.
  4. totally agree with this. i kept going because i didn't really care if the band fucked up. i just wanted to hear jerry play live...even if it was bum notes :-) there were always moments of brilliance, even in '95. something unspoken happened and it was cosmic. i can't think of any other word. love the man. ...of course, bob, phil, billy, mickey and brent were badass too.
  5. well said, but for me it was more like 8 years. there must be something in the air because i'm listening to so much dead lately. mostly late 70s. dead are always in rotation, but lately it's only been dead in rotation. not arguing with that. my wife is lamenting 15 min. sugarees. i've also been watching some 77-78 vids on youtube. man, garcia was really bouncy in that era:)
  6. yeah, the vids i've seen show the band really enjoying themselves. they make it seem so effortless. poncho just looks like he loves every chord he plays:-) the new tunes aren't to bad either.
  7. fun interview...lots of lazy journalism. proof that the news pretty much gets a lot wrong, or at least misses the nuance.
  8. research in creativity indicates that artists/scientists/etc. reach a peak and then decline. however, the beginning of the end is usally another burst of creativity, not as good as the first peak, however. this plays in all the major rock acts. wilco probably will coast at a declined level rather than hit bottom. neil young is a great example. if he had quit in 1979, he'd be even more legendary. however, like all the others, he aquiesced to that horrible 80s production and at the same time his writing went way down hill. he did have a peak again in the early 90s. after that, it's been
  9. party girl is also known as psychedelic pill or it's another song. fwiw i'm so psyched that neil has played lots of ragged glory stuff in recent year. Love and only love is awesome...and followed by Powderfinger!!
  10. not a fan of MMJ, but a huge fan of that dog in your avatar!
  11. after AGIB there were a few good tunes and lots lazy ones. SBS was a missed opportunity after AGIB. having nels in the band could've really changed the band if he'd had the influence o'rourke had on the previous albums. i don't think anything they've done is cringe-worthy. i just don't fine anything on TWL memorable where as SBS has Side With Seeds and Impossible Germany and WTA has Bull Black Nova and Deeper Down. classic tunes in my opinion. hell, maybe i just need to sit in a dark room and listen to TWL 3 times in a row.
  12. i guess they had one tune off the Americana album (Jesus Chariot) but dropped it from the setlist. i'm surprised they're not playing Cortez. i guess the new originals will be on the next CH record due next year. interestingly, one of the new tunes is called Twisted Road which was the name of his solo electric tour and the working title for what would become Le Noise. from concert reviews, a few of the new songs are 15min or longer
  13. red rocks setlist 8/5/2012 classic neil! puts out a new album of covers, goes on tour, plays none of the new album, but plays a shit load of new original songs!! 1. Love And Only Love 2. Powderfinger 3. Born In Ontario 4. Walk Like A Giant 5. The Needle And The Damage Done 6. Twisted Road 7. For The Love Of Man 8. Ramada Inn 9. Cinnamon Girl 10. F*!#in' Up 11. Psychedelic Pill 12. Mr. Soul
  14. i really like AM, so i'd add that in. i'm with you on this though. bands do peak and decline and near the end may have another small peak. it's harder to discern this over the last 20 years as the sound of records has remained similar. where as, 70s bands shitty albums are the 80s sounding albums. when i first hear Whole Love my first thought was, this is the decline. each album before had at least some memorable songs and a favorite (SBS-WTA). but TWL is utterly unforgettable and in some ways quite self-referential, cover and all. it will be interesting to see these songs fall from th
  15. no prob. i think i'm gonna get some of the download series stuff. never got any of them ;-) i know what i'll be listening too tonight. btw, anyone have any idea on that TRI jerry party being streamed again?
  16. http://www.amazon.com/The-Grateful-Dead/e/B000AR8M94/digital/ref=ntt_mp3_rdr?_encoding=UTF8&sn=d GD deals on amazon today.
  17. new business plan for failing radio business, pay DJs a lot less money.
  18. last time i saw them my friend and i just looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders during this part of VC as well as every songs wash of noise at the end via nels. still don't get the need for this.
  19. i'm just curious, when were they great? AGiB is their masterpiece as far as i'm concerned.
  20. with SBS the songs just seem more coherent to me. each one is like a little art rock suite with a hook and instrumental part. i'm thinking specifically of everything except the song SBS and please be patient with me. the songs on TWL just don't seem to go any where and just peter out. i'll probably get grilled for this too, but art of almost and one sunday morning are way too long and nel's dissonant solos just don't fit the songs like Dawned on me and i might. capital city, standing o and rising red lung are just toss offs to me that could have some really cool instrumental sections or s
  21. SBS towers over Whole Love. the worst songs on SBS blow TWL away. I think TWL is a mess of an album and the good songs are ruined by Nels wankery. i know i'm gonna get nailed on this one, but i just had to get it off my chest
  22. i'd love to get that 90s box set, but can't afford at this point. hopefully they'll release these as single sets. LOVE spring 90!
  23. yes, i've heard that one too. pretty good. one that wasn't was that shining star release several years ago. not too good. i wish the jerry estate would get their shit together and release more stuff like the dead do.
  24. was phil ever not on? :-) yeah, that alpine 89 video is so so good. that all over now is like 10min long! i love it. it is cool to see the band just having fun. i always loved hearing west LA. btw, don't let go!! yes that version on the jerry live disc is amazing. that whole set is just pure jerry. speaking of which, anyone get those pure jerry shows when they were coming out? last thing i got was that 1980 show, after midnight. the show is okay, but the piano dude is a bit much with his synth's and stuff. how sweet it is a bit rough as far as i'm concerned. love tough mama th
