  1. i appreciate the review as well. i absolutely loved jerry band shows. they were always so mellow and it was all serious heads. not to mention jerry just wailed! after my first jgb show i wondered if weir was holding garcia back. it's sad the he had to keep up with the dead. it seems he would've been much happier doing stuff with grisman and doing some long jerry show runs. btw, that jerry band live cd from 91 is incredible.
  2. http://archive.org/details/too1998-07-04.113148.flac16 the last few comments inspired me to listen to some other ones. next best thing as far as i'm concerned. kimock just nails it and hornsby! if nothing, listen to scarlet.
  3. i remember listening to the webcast of those alpine shows. aside from the other ones, those were very much like dead shows. there was a lot of buzz. i think i'd have to be in just the right move to see furthur and not go because i felt like i had too. damn, i've been seeing these bands for 20 years thinking..'oh i better go b/c phil's getting old'. glad you enjoyed furthur buddy.
  4. i'm jealous! even if the guitar player isn't up to par, melvin rocks! have a good time. not being harsh at all about my little band. we initially pulled it together with other members, but we got more gigs, so new members came in (not from me). yeah, the keys guy doesn't get it. i'm a really mellow guy, but playing music with people that don't get it is infuriating! let the good times roll.
  5. Autumn Defense! (or as my wife calls them, 'the autumn defense league')
  6. i passed this year. after having not seen any dead-related bands for a while i went to Furthur last year. it was so boring and they played the entire Terrapin! every song is so slow and the band really hasn't found their groove that comes with playing years together. arrangements are touch and go and John is way over his head. he is so timid and really can't jam. he didn't jam in DSO either. if they brought in stu allen or a mellow player that had his own sound and actually ripped solos at the right spot, the i'd go. i really wish bob and phil would get hornsby, billy and stu allen on
  7. cover does look like a follow-up to empire burlesque. it's intriguing. i curious about the sound and if it's gonna be mostly blues like the last album or more varied like modern times. i loved modern times. i appreciate dylan, but was never a rabid fan, but for some reason i listened the shit out of modern times :-)
  8. this is sad. the classic guard is moving on. RIP. so, was lord in deep purple at present? that band has such an interesting history. steve morse, of all people, is in the band. i'm sure they'll continue touring.
  9. yeah, his name is Steven Wilson and he is prolific as hell as a mixer, producer and artist. he just put out a very interesting album with the main dude from opeth. i've listened to some porcupine tree albums, but randomly picked up his most recent solo album called Grace for Drowning. it is the pinacle of sound quality and has some great songs. kind of like radiohead meets pink floyd meets lizard era crimson.
  10. Okay, so ged is aware of the loudness war, but he really doesnt care rush albums are mastered too loud. That's infuriating, but it's nice to know rush not ignorant. They just don't give a shit. Hence, the new album is a muddy garbage loud mix!
  11. i like the post gabariel hackett era of genesis the best...trick of the tail is a classic.
  12. neil is probably my favorite artist, so this was a fun read. what's funny is scott's work doesn't sound like neil that much to me :-) i am going to check some of his stuff out more closely though. i love how he likes neil's 'bad' albums. i totally agree with him on Landing On Water. great, great songs...shit production. he should remake it.
  13. progarchives.com more than you'd ever want to know.
  14. jff, well said. the one before this, snakes and arrows, at least had better mixing/mastering. there are some actually memorable songs on this new one, but i am utterly astounded at how bad it sounds. it's infuriating to tell you the truth. they really have taken a turn for the worst. they did used be more interesting and even in the 80s-90s they had some major key hooks. now it's a sonic nightmare
  15. i like those UK albums. first one is best. i always kind of saw them as the final death rattle of the classic era of prog. of course, bruford remained relevent with KC, but Wetton went onto Asia. Asia just put out an album called XXX. ;p as far as new prog goes, i do like Dream Theater and The Flower Kings. a bit of cheese, but at this point, who cares. btw-the new rush is a muddy mess of a mix.
  16. i bought the new rush, because i have this idea that i'm a rush completist. i bought it knowing full well that the last two albums were essentially unlistenable (song writing and horrid production/mastering). well, the album is all but unlistenable. i can't get bast the first two songs. i got caught in the buzz and got screwed by marketing, brick-walled mastering and hope against hope. i should've downloaded and listened first. i just don't have the will to 'get into it' the way i've forced myself in the past with bum CD purchases. imo, this is part of the issue at hand.
  17. i really need to get back to this. i find i've enjoyed music far less since its all become computer-centric. to decide what to listen to i look at a screen, not the music shelf.
  18. http://airgordon.tumblr.com/post/76078291/steve-albini-on-music-downloading Albini
  19. same could be said for lowery. i just bought two pretty hard to find CDs thinking i would really like them. well, they blow. maybe there's a reason they're out of print. now if i would have sampled them a little more closely in one way or another, i wouldn't be out $50. thing is, most shit people download, they wouldn't have bought in the first place or they would've been screwed with a bad CD. at this in with the shitty production and dynamics these days, bob has a point. i wish downloads were cheaper. no reason a song should be $1.25. piracy would all but be gone if songs were $.
  20. steve albini has the complete opposite view of lowery.
  21. over the last few years, i've gone back to CDs after dabbling in legal and illegal downloading. more is pretty much never not better. i'd much rather spend money on some merch and CD by Wilco and live with it for a few months than listen to lots of different stuff from downloading. quality over quantity is more satisfying.
  22. excited about this re-issue. WOA has been one of those double CDs that has stayed in the 30 dollar range. i hope it's cheaper and for god's sake not compressed to shit. you can't beat Venus and Mars>Rock Show>Jet! also, the cover art is bad ass.
  23. i still haven't picked this up, but from what i've heard, it's great. i love this kind of stuff. i wish he was hitting atlanta, GA. they'll probably tour again in late fall.
  24. BTW-Autumn Defense play Sentimental Lady. so great.
