what do you think is the best guitar (electric)
jff replied to sean Patrick's topic in Solid State Technology
That thing looks great. I used to have an '81 Les Paul standard (black). It was an amazing guitar, but I traded it in on some '65 Ludwig drums in black diamond pearl. Wish I stil lhad that guitar, but the drums have served me better than any guitar ever has. Nowadays I have a Muddy Waters Telecaster. My next guitar will either be an Epiphone Dot, an Ibanez Artcore AS73 and possibly an Epiphone Casino. I'm leaning towards the Dot or Artcore since they have humbuckers and my tele has single coil pickups. How do P-90s (which is what the Casino has) compare with Tele-style single coils? -

Les Paul doesn't even play a guitar that fits that descripton. -
By that logic, the Rolling Stones are also guilty of poor taste in naming thier band.

I've seen two "The Pauls". They were both brown with wood grain showing if I'm not mistaken. I'd probably rather have a "The Paul" than a Les Paul Studio. I used to have a 1981 Les Paul Standard that had low flat/wide frets. Wish I still had it. Great guitar. -
Not that it matters, but there's only one Criminal Records store.

I don't think anyone said they hated Echo, but it is widely considered a flop for some reason. An old thread here was pretty negative towards it, much moreso than this thread. Cabin Down Below probably makes a good live song (dumb songs always work better live than on record, especially when you have 20,000 drunk fans). I can't remember if he played it when I saw him on the Echo tour. On record, it's a song that I thought was fantastic the first time I heard it and terrible every time since.

Totally. Lots of great songs on Echo. "Lonesome Sundown" and "One More Day, ONe More Night" are two of his best ballads. There's also no shortage of fun pop-rock tunes on there. "Accused of Love", "This Ones for Me" come to mind. No shortage of straight rock and roll, either, and some blistering lead guitar on "Room at te Top". Pretty much everything you could hope for from a Tom Petty record. Wildflowers has good songs, but to my ears it suffers in a big way from Steve Ferrone's heavyhanded drumming (maybe it's just mixed too loud). T.P. says he's STILL struggling to get that guy up

All those places, and America as a whole, will be SO much better once they are opened up to the logging industry.

What's the best guitar magazine these days?

Cool, so all anyone needs is one issue? Does VG have lessons? I've flipped through it several times, but have only noticed their interviews and building/collecting types of articles. Cool magazine, but they should make it smaller. A stack of those would take up the same amount of room as a lazy-boy. -

You can't really go wrong with a basic Tele. That's what I've got (Muddy Waters model) and have been thoroughly pleased. I'm saving my pennies for either an Epiphone Dot (ES 335 copy) or an Ibanez Artcore AS73 (similar to the Dot, but with bound neck and goofier looking F holes). Their customer service is excellent (or was a few years ago when I needed them to help me out). I called because I missed an issue, which might not even have been their fault, and they tacked on four free months. And that's on top of the fact that I got a 3 year sub from a special olympics fundraiser for $20, which probably made the magazine LOSE money. Contrast that with the hassles and accusations you get if you ever call Modern Drummer for help with your subscription...pathetic. -
Nancy's Pizza on Ponce De Leon between Krispy Kreme (another retchid culinary abomination) and Old Spagetti Factory. There might be one in Buckhead, too.

Knock yourself in the head until you forget you ever heard of them. You can thank me later.

Guiter Player is the best guitar magazine I have found. Considering their cover price is close to $7 a subscription is the way to go. I think you can get a subscription for under $20. -
Glenn acknowledging that they haven't been to Australia (among other places) in a long time would seem to suggest that playing there on their next multi-year touring cycle will be a priority...a cause to celebrate, not be sad.
-
Totally. Hearing "Lucifer Sam" blasting over a huge pa while waiting for a band to play remains one of the most glorious music listening experiences for me.

You are free to donate as much money as you'd like to the Carters or the BCMA, no cd purchase required. I don't know anything about Unearthed, but word to the wise: never trust marketing slogans. I don't think there is anything at all wrong with releasing these recordings. On the contrary, I think the emotions expressed through the singing of a man about to die is about as fascinating as music can get, particularly when the singer is arguably the greatest of all time at expressing emotions through song.

Why should he do that? It's not like all the profits are going into his pocket. There's still a Cash (and Carter) family and estate.

For anyone who might be interested, Tom Waits tickets for the Atlanta show went on sale Saturday and are still available for $60 (gen. admission floor) or $65 (reserved balcony seats).
-
I stand by my comments.

I've never eaten pizza in Chicago, but we have a place in Atlanta that claims to have real Chicago pizza. The pizza in their ad looks like someone threw up their all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner onto a deep dish crust.
-
I don't know about that, but if your auduences are like your pizza, I feel sorry for you.
-
So, what's the right way? Your way? For the record, I like him a lot and would love to see him (especially if Marc Ribot is in his band), but I'm not going to the show because Atlanta audiences ruin concerts and I feel like $125 ($65 ticket, plus fees, drinks & tips) would be better spent on another guitar. Tom Waits would probaly agree.
