  1. Nature (and business) abhors a vacuum. For instance, we just found out this week that someone is opening up that most quixotic and doomed of ventures - a newspaper - in my home town.
  2. I did a story once on the Poughkeepsie-based Center for Objectivist Studies. I assume the memo comes from there.
  3. Honest to God, the American people are not ready for that level of a controlled economy. They shot Huey Long for even suggesting it.
  4. Thanks for these - my band crush is developing into full swoon.
  5. High CEO pay is like high baseball player pay - you can't really justify it under any other logic than market forces, but market forces is the logic we operate under. Ultimately, it is between the company and its stockholders (if it's publicly held) UNLESS the government gets involved in a bailout-type scenario, in which case taxpayers are entitled, in my opinion, to a little of that compensation back, in compensation for bailing out the company in the first place. Y'know, accountability.
  6. Heh. Maybe there'll be a picture disk you will need three wheelbarrelfuls of money to buy!
  7. A lot of us who really, profoundly disapproved of the Bush administration's policies felt rotten over the last eight years. Iraq, Katrina, the whole ignorance of the climate change crisis - it just seemed to us that we were witnessing stupidity of enormous, maybe even apocalyptic proportions and many of us who care about our country and the role it should play in the world were upset by this to varying degrees.
  8. Gotta be closing in on 90. EDIT: Yes, he will be 90 in May.
  9. Finally, some sense is injected into this "wah, wah, I have to pay more taxes" whining. War on the Rich? The bogus GOP claim that Obama is trying to bleed wealthy Americans. By Daniel Gross Posted Thursday, March 5, 2009, at 6:09 PM ET To hear conservatives tell it, you'd think mobs of shiftless welfare moms were marauding through the streets of Greenwich and Palm Springs, lynching bankers and hedge-fund managers, stringing up shopkeepers, and herding lawyers into internment camps. President Obama and his budgeteers, they say, have declared war on the rich. On Tuesday, Washington Post co
  10. There's a small cluster of local musicians who play at most Clearwater events. I would not be at all surprised if Pete Seeger made an appearance of some description.
  11. This reminds me of my visceral dislike of 300. Can we just send Snyder to 1930s Germany to get his collab on with Leni Riefenstahl, already?
  12. Well, I did say maybe, but I wonder why I typed it because I actually like V for Vendetta better.
  13. I used to work for these people, who seemed to resent the fact they had to pay people to put out their newspapers. Conn AG office objects to Journal Register bonuses By KATHY MATHESON
  14. ... just based on that one song, "The Mountain." I like it a lot a lot. It has the ROCK contained within.
  15. Yeah, really. How many millions of dollars does one NEED to drive a company into the ground?
  16. Compare and contrast Pynchon with Vonnegut. I would argue that Vonnegut is far superior to Pynchon, because he is able to communicate more. much more than in any Pynchon I have ever read, in language pretty much anyone can understand. Pynchon is kind of like the Yngwie Malmsteen of literature - a lot of notes and technical skill, but ultimately not a great deal of heart.
  17. That's the problem. For the economy to recover, people have to start spending money again, but people either have no money because they got no job, or they're scared shitless they're going to get laid off, so they rein in their spending. Then many people see a disconnect between what they feel they have to do and what the government is doing, so they get angry.
  18. I want it to rock, but I am certainly open to the possibility that it will be mellow and still be excellent.
  19. Dude, if you figure out a way to get people to stop fucking, you will win ALL the Nobel Prizes.
