Agreed that one should branch out from Miles and Trane pretty quickly before buying their entire back catalog (like that's even possible). Re VV, I have it and love it but whether you need it depends on whether you have the original, i.e. the "incomplete" version. It's a chunk of money but I've seen it relatively cheap online.

Here is a top 50 from http://home.austarnet.com.au/petersykes/jazz100/top100.html that is pretty good. There is so much jazz and it's so hard to tell what you're going to like that I would just start with some of the obvious "landmark" CDs and see what grabs you. Lists are stupid and I could find lots of fault with this one, but this is as good a way to start as any. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue - 1959 John Coltrane - A Love Supreme - 1964 John Coltrane - Giant Steps - 1959 Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um - 1959 Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus - 1956 The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out - 19

Thanks. Getting it now. -
I was reading Pf's top 200 songs of the '60s and was interested in hearing the following: Brian Wilson: "Surf's Up (solo piano version)" (Van Dyke Parks/Brian Wilson) 1966 Chart info: U.S. (N/A), UK (N/A) Available on Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of the Beach Boys I looked on Oink to download just this song but can't tell which version on that box set is being referenced here. Anyone know? There seem to be three versions on it and AMG is no help either. Thanks.

"High, Low, and In Between" and "The Late, Great Townes Van Zandt" are available packaged on one CD. That would be the best start imo.

Thanks for the heads up. This is really good.

Neil Young- Living with War Better than I could have ever hoped. Not great but still better than expected.

I love it but compared to the rest of his catalog, it's near the bottom of my Dylan top 10. Quite a Top 10 though.

Sorry you didn't like him; I'm a fan boy so I can't be very objective. FYI, Danny Thompson is no relation.

This is the most recent solo show I have. Great cover of Brittney (sp?) Spears and funny jab at Madonna. It's MP3 at 192. Hope you like it and report back if you end up being able to see him. No problem. I can do a solo or with his band depending upon which you'll be seeing. Any idea?

I would definitely recommend seeing Richard Thompson if possible. Is he solo or with band? I've seen him with his band twice and he is so amazing. I've heard that his solo shows are also great. He is such a good live performer with an extensive catalog to draw from. I can do a YSI of a live show if you'd like; most recent I have is probably 2004.

I know people hate lists (despite the strong urge to make them ourselves) but I am surprised by the backlash against this one. I thought it was a pretty good list. To me, the ordering needs a little work but what's included and what's not included is as good as any list I've seen. I think the VU were influential far beyond any of the bands they mentioned and deserve a high place on that list. Not 1 but a high place. This was how Rolling Stones Top 500 list was made I believe and everyone bitched about that one too.

Guillemots - From the Cliffs I haven't checked out the full length yet but I'm not sure what I think of this. Some great moments but I need to listen more for an overall opinion.

R.E.M. - New Adventures In Hi-Fi R.E.M. thread inspired me to check this out.

Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers Certainly better than the last one but not sure (yet) how this compares to the first two. Love the sound of this record though. Another A+ effort from Mr. O'Rourke.
