Do you still sing of the mountain bed we made of limbs and leaves?

Do you still sigh there near the sky where the holly berry bleeds?

You laughed as I covered you over with leaves

Face, breast, hips, and thighs

You smiled when I said the leaves were just the color of your eyes

Rosin smells and turpentine smells from eucalyptus and pine

Bitter tastes of twigs we chewed where tangled wood vines twine

Trees held us in on all four sides so thick we could not see

I could not see any wrong in you, and you saw none in me

Your arm was brown against the ground, your cheeks part of the sky

Your fingers played with grassy moss, as limber you did lie

Your stomach moved beneath your shirt and your knees were in the air

Your feet played games with mountain roots as you lay thinking there

Below us the trees grew clumps of trees, raised families of trees, and they

As proud as we tossed their heads in the wind and flung good seeds away

The sun was hot and the sun was bright down in the valley below

Where people starved and hungry for life so empty come and go

There in the shade and hid from the sun we freed our minds and learned

Our greatest reason for being here, our bodies moved and burned

There on our mountain bed of leaves we learned life's reason why

The people laugh and love and dream, they fight, they hate to die

The smell of your hair I know is still there, if most of our leaves are blown

Our words still ring in the brush and the trees where singing seeds are sown

Your shape and form is dim but plain, there on our mountain bed

I see my life was brightest where you laughed and laid your head...

I learned the reason why man must work and how to dream big dreams

To conquer time and space and fight the rivers and the seas

I stand here filled with my emptiness now and look at city and land

And I know why farms and cities are built by hot, warm, nervous hands

I crossed many states just to stand here now, my face all hot with tears

I crossed city, and valley, desert, and stream, to bring my body here

My history and future blaze bright in me and all my joy and pain

Go through my head on our mountain bed where I smell your hair again.

All this day long I linger here and on in through the night

My greeds, desires, my cravings, hopes, my dreams inside me fight:

My loneliness healed, my emptiness filled, I walk above all pain

Back to the breast of my woman and child to scatter my seeds again

I was getting ready to be a threat

I was getting set for my

accidental suicide

the kind where no one dies

no one looks too surprised

then you realize

that you're riding on a para-success

of a heavy-handed metaphor

and a feeling like you've been here before

because you've been here before

and you've been here before

then a word washed ashore

a word washed ashore

then a word washed ashore

sovay, sovay, sovay

all along the day

I was getting ready to consider my next plan of attack

I think I'm gonna sack

the whole board of trustees

all those don quixotes and their B-17s

and I swear this time

yeah this time

they'll blow us back to the 70's

and this time

they're playin' ride of the valkyries

with no semblance of grace or ease

and they're acting on vagaries

with their violent proclivities

and they're playing ride

playin' ride

playin' ride

ride of the valkyries

sovay, sovay, sovay

all along the day

Close your eyes and go to sleep, baby

Take your head off your feet, honey

Cause you've been working hard and I know you're tired

You been trying hard not to think I'm a liar

What's the world got in store?

What's the world got in store for you?

What's the world got in store for you now?

Come on baby somehow, I need you

Do I have to show you how, baby?

I'm not trying to knock you out

Or was it about

I just know you need your rest

But I can't say what's best for you

You've been working hard and I know you're tired

I've been trying hard not to feel like a liar

What's the world got in store?

What's the world got in store for you?

What's the world got in store for you now?

What's the world got in store?

What's the world got in store for you?

What's the world got in store for you now?

Buckets of rain

Buckets of tears

Got all them buckets comin' out of my ears.

Buckets of moonbeams in my hand,

I got all the love, honey baby,

You can stand.

I been meek

And hard like an oak

I seen pretty people disappear like smoke.

Friends will arrive, friends will disappear,

If you want me, honey baby,

I'll be here.

Like your smile

And your fingertips

Like the way that you move your lips.

I like the cool way you look at me,

Everything about you is bringing me

Misery.

Little red wagon

Little red bike

I ain't no monkey but I know what I like.

I like the way you love me strong and slow,

I'm takin' you with me, honey baby,

When I go.

Life is sad

Life is a bust

All ya can do is do what you must.

You do what you must do and ya do it well,

I'll do it for you, honey baby,

Can't you tell?

They sat together in the park

As the evening sky grew dark,

She looked at him and he felt a spark tingle to his bones.

'Twas then he felt alone and wished that he'd gone straight

And watched out for a simple twist of fate.

They walked along by the old canal

A little confused, I remember well

And stopped into a strange hotel with a neon burnin' bright.

He felt the heat of the night hit him like a freight train

Moving with a simple twist of fate.

A saxophone someplace far off played

As she was walkin' by the arcade.

As the light bust through a beat-up shade where he was wakin' up,

She dropped a coin into the cup of a blind man at the gate

And forgot about a simple twist of fate.

He woke up, the room was bare

He didn't see her anywhere.

He told himself he didn't care, pushed the window open wide,

Felt an emptiness inside to which he just could not relate

Brought on by a simple twist of fate.

He hears the ticking of the clocks

And walks along with a parrot that talks,

Hunts her down by the waterfront docks where the sailers all come in.

Maybe she'll pick him out again, how long must he wait

Once more for a simple twist of fate.

People tell me it's a sin

To know and feel too much within.

I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring.

She was born in spring, but I was born too late

Blame it on a simple twist of fate.

My baby loves me

I'm so happy

Happy makes me a modern girl

Took my money

And bought a TV

TV brings me

Closer to the world

My whole life

was like a picture

of a sunny day.

My baby loves me

I'm so hungry

Hunger makes me

A modern girl

Took my money

And bought a donut

The hole's the size of

The entire world

My whole life

looked like a picture

of a sunny day.

My baby loves me

I'm so angry

Anger makes me a modern girl

Took my money

I couldn't buy nothin'

I'm sick of this

Brave new world

The Maginot Line

Did you hear about the foolish French

Who hid themselves behind a trench.

Filled it with a million men

Ten thousand heavy guns and then

Figured they would be just fine

Now they had the maginot line.

Maginot line, maginot line,

Thought you were so safe and strong.

Maginot line, maginot line,

Stupid, stupid, you were wrong.

It wasn't very long at all

before Mr. Hitler came to call.

He said: Boys, this line is strong and sound

Lucky for us we can just go around.

The stout defenders fought their best

But their turrets faced East

And the Germans were West.

Maginot line, maginot line,

Thought you were so safe and strong.

Maginot line, maginot line,

Stupid, stupid, you were wrong.

Maginot line, maginot line,

why didn't some smart fellow say:

Maginot line, maginot line,

Your guns are pointing the wrong way.

Your guns are pointing the wrong way.

So if you've got something you hold dear

And you'd hate to see it disappear.

You think that everything's just fine

Better check it one more time.

And reflect upon the Maginot doom

A perfect fortress makes a perfect tomb.

Maginot line, maginot line,

Thought you were so safe and strong.

Maginot line, maginot line,

Stupid, stupid, you were wrong.

Maginot line, maginot line,

why didn't some smart fellow say:

Maginot line, maginot line,

Your guns are pointing the wrong way.

Your guns are pointing the wrong way.

Your guns are pointing the wrong way.

I'll sing it one last time for you

Then we really have to go

You've been the only thing that's right

In all I've done

And I can barely look at you

But every single time I do

I know we'll make it anywhere

Away from here

Light up, light up

As if you have a choice

Even if you cannot hear my voice

I'll be right beside you dear

Louder louder

And we'll run for our lives

I can hardly speak I understand

Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes

Makes it so hard not to cry

And as we say our long goodbye

I nearly do

Light up, light up

As if you have a choice

Even if you cannot hear my voice

I'll be right beside you dear

Louder louder

And we'll run for our lives

I can hardly speak I understand

Why you can't raise your voice to say

Slower slower

We don't have time for that

All I want is to find an easier way

To get out of our little heads

Have heart my dear

We're bound to be afraid

Even if it's just for a few days

Making up for all this mess

Light up, light up

As if you have a choice

Even if you cannot hear my voice

I'll be right beside you dear

You're beautiful more beautiful than me

You're honorable more honorable than me

Loyal to the Bank of America

It's a sign of the times

It's a sign of the times

You're sharpening stones, walking on coals

To improve your business acumen.

Sharpening stones, walking on coals,

To improve your business acumen.

Vested interest united ties, landed gentry rationalize

Look who bought the myth, by jingo, buy America

It's a sign of the times

Enemy sighted, enemy met, I'm addressing the realpolitik

Look who bought the myth, by jingo, buy America

"Let us not assassinate this man further, Senator,

you've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir?

At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

We're sharpening stones, walking on coals

To improve your business acumen.

Sharpening stones, walking on coals,

Any Day Now - Elbow

Any day now how's about getting out of this place.

Any ways.

Got a lot of spare time. Some of my youth and all of my senses on overdrive.

What's got into me? Can't believe myself!

Must be someone else. Must be.

Don't play Coltrane you will sleep at the wheel

Eyes on-horizon. Don't sleep at the wheel.

Temper is a package

Pulling at its bow

Darling disasters

Help you grow

Panthers build their blood to bury

Daughters leave their dads to marry

Hide in the weeds

The orchestra

Is proving death again

Temper is the warp speed of red flashes

And all the bells ringing god forbid, god forbid

Did I catch you in the flashes?

Did I catch you in the flashes?

Hide with me

In the weeds

I'm proving death

Alive in the weeds

The orchestra

Is proving death

I've seen love go by my door

It's never been this close before

Never been so easy or so slow.

Been shooting in the dark too long

When somethin's not right it's wrong

Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Dragon clouds so high above

I've only known careless love,

It's always hit me from below.

This time around it's more correct

Right on target, so direct,

Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Purple clover, Queen Anne lace,

Crimson hair across your face,

You could make me cry if you don't know.

Can't remember what I was thinkin' of

You might be spoilin' me too much, love,

Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Flowers on the hillside, bloomin' crazy,

Crickets talkin' back and forth in rhyme,

Blue river runnin' slow and lazy,

I could stay with you forever

And never realize the time.

Situations have ended sad,

Relationships have all been bad.

Mine've been like Verlaine's and Rimbaud.

But there's no way I can compare

All those scenes to this affair,

Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Yer gonna make me wonder what I'm doin',

Stayin' far behind without you.

Yer gonna make me wonder what I'm sayin',

Yer gonna make me give myself a good talkin' to.

I'll look for you in old Honolulu,

San Francisco, Ashtabula,

Yer gonna have to leave me now, I know.

But I'll see you in the sky above,

In the tall grass, in the ones I love,

Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

I'm keeping pictures of you in my head

I'm looking at them every chance I get

I'm developing a certain thing for you

Each and every night in my darkroom

Some are color some are black and white

Your face is keeping me awake at night

Imagine you and me together like I do

Spending lots of time in my darkroom

I've got a dirty mind

It takes control sometimes

When I lie down to sleep

It's creeping up on me

I'm keeping pictures of you in my head

I'm looking at them every chance I get

I'm developing a certain thing for you

Each and every night in my darkroom

On a brass bed in Paradise

All covered in bones

Lovers hearts were broken

By sticks and by stones

I hang my head on the pillow

Sip from the cup you left behind

There ain't no doubt

Here in my mind

This change did come along

At the right time

We sit here so quietly

Watch Jupiter rise

The stars sing a lullaby

For us tonight

Didja ever wonder

The difference between them and us?

Sometime a love

Can mean more than trust

But I'll never change (always change)

Never change (always change)

Never change my mind

No, no I'll never change (always change)

Never change (always change)

Never change my mind

Well babe I got your picture

And it's framed in dust

Every time I see your face

My heart starts to rust

Didya ever wonder

If the sky would fall

And nobody told you

Anything at all?

Sit still and have mercy

Like we used to say

Don't ever wonder why

Or what we'll be

I hang my head on your shoulder

Cry for the times we never shared

But I'll never change (always change)

Never change (always change)

Never change my mind

No, no I'll never change (always change)

Never change (always change)

Never change my mind

No, no I'll never change (always change)

Never change (always change)

Never change my mind

No, no I'll never change (always change)

Never change (always change)

Never change my mind

You know that I love you,

Baby, but you just won't let me.

You know that I love you,

Baby, but you just won't let me.

Every morning I get up, I sip my cup;

My eyes get red, no-one to hear me.

One more thing I'd like to say right here,

Baby, but you just won't let me.

One more thing I'd like to say right here,

Baby, but you just won't let me.

I'd like to say:baby, you so nice:

I'd like to do the same thing twice, yeah!

Baby, you so nice.

I'd like to do the same thing twice.

I love you so much, so-o-o-

Love you - love you, baby, so much.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

I live in the woods alone;

I need your (company) company.

Baby! Woods alone!

I need your company, yeah!

Every morning I get up, I sip my cup;

My eyes get red, no-one to hear me.

One more thing I'd like to say right here,

Baby, but you just won't let me, yeah!

One more thing I'd like to say right here,

Baby, but you just won't let me.

Orange skies

Carnivals and cotton candy and you

And I love you too

You know I do

Nightingale

Prettier than anything in the world

And I love you too

You know I do

You make me happy

Laughing, glad, and full of glee

And you don't have to try, girl

For you it comes so naturally

Right here in my arms

She loves a soul that I have never been

She loves a soul that I have never been

A dog among dogs, a man among men

And every day when I come home to her

She holds a phantom, she kisses and she hugs him

And I am not averse to how she loves him

Why must I live and walk unloved as what I am ?

Why can't I be loved as what I am ?

A wolf among wolves and not as a man among men

Doo doo doo...

She craves a hole that she can go in

A sheltered cave that I have never seen

Not in my life, and not even in my dreams

Why can't I be loved as what I am ?

A wolf among wolves and not as a man among men

I want to tell you something

That I should've, long ago

I wish that you and I had those kids

Maybe bought us that home

I wish that we were still in your room

In your bed and you were holding me

'Cause there ain't no way I'll ever stop from lovin' you now

There ain't no way I'll ever stop from lovin' you now

No, there ain't no way and I'm gonna try and show you somehow

Somehow, someday

I dreamt that you and I were still young

Laughing like little kids

I'll never know just how bad it hurt

Or what I did

I wish that we were stumbling fast

Down on Irving and 6th

I wish we were still making plans

But now, there's nothing to fix

But there ain't no way I'll ever stop from lovin' you now

There ain't no way I'll ever stop from lovin' you now

No, there ain't no way and I'm gonna try and show you somehow

Somehow and oh, someday

Someday...someday

Ah honey, someday

Everywhere everywhere everywhere

It's all so plain it's all a plan

The sky doesn't ever end

The air just gets much thinner further up

You could keep diggin' down and down

A thousand graves down without turnin'

Around or finding hell

You find you're digging up again

Everywhere everywhere everywhere

Willful suspension of disbelief

Well they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night

Now they blew up his house, too

Down on the boardwalk they're gettin' ready for a fight

Gonna see what them racket boys can do

Now there's trouble busin' in from outta state

And the D.A. can't get no relief

Gonna be a rumble out on the promenade

And the gamblin' commission's hangin' on by the skin of its teeth

Well now everything dies, baby that's a fact

But maybe everything that dies someday comes back

Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty

And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

Well I got a job and tried to put my money away

But I got debts that no honest man can pay

So I drew what I had from the Central Trust

And I bought us two tickets on that Coast City bus

Well now everything dies, baby that's a fact

But maybe everything that dies someday comes back

Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty

And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

Now our luck may have died and our love may be cold

But with you forever I'll stay

We're goin' out where the sand's turnin' to gold

So put on your stockings baby 'cause the night's getting cold

And everything dies, baby that's a fact

But maybe everything that dies someday comes back

Now I been lookin' for a job but it's hard to find

Down here it's just winners and losers and don't get caught on the wrong side of that line

Well I'm tired of comin' out on the losin' end

So honey last night I met this guy and I'm gonna do a little favor for him

Well I guess everything dies, baby that's a fact

But maybe everything that dies someday comes back

Put your hair up nice and fix yourself up pretty

And meet me tonight in Atlantic City

Meet me tonight in Atlantic City

When I was young and full of grace

And spirited - a rattlesnake

When I was young and fever fell

My spirit, I will not tell

You're on your honor not to tell

I believe in coyotes and time as an abstract

Explain the change, the difference between

What you want and what you need, there's the key,

Your adventure for today, what do you do

Between the horns of the day?

I believe my shirt is wearing thin

And change is what I believe in

When I was young and give and take

And foolish said my fool awake

When I was young and fever fell

My spirit, I will not tell

You're on your honor, on your honor

Trust in your calling, make sure your calling's true

Think of others, the others think of you

Silly rule golden words make, practice, practice makes perfect,

Perfect is a fault, and fault lines change

I believe my humor's wearing thin

And change is what I believe in

I believe my shirt is wearing thin

And change is what I believe in

When I was young and full of grace

As spirited a rattlesnake

When I was young and fever fell

My spirit, I will not tell

You're on your honor, on your honor

I believe in example

I believe my throat hurts

Example is the checker to the key

I believe my humor's wearing thin

And I believe the poles are shifting

No wheels to ride

No wheels to travel

No tracks to take on down

The road I walk is getting heavy

But I must still go on

And in the night

I hear the calling

As the train goes by

Then all I hear is my footsteps falling

Upon the tears I cry

(yeah)

If I could find a better way to get to you

You know that I would

No money lines my pockets now

But by the spring you know that it should

Well I just cant wait to catch that greyhound bus

That will take me back right to your side

(oh oh)

Can
