a.miller
It seems like Jeff has quite the taste for vintage and somewhat rare instruments. Anybody know what kind of dollar amount that investment totals?

a.miller
woah, did I tread on some holy ground? I didn't mean it in any sort of negative way. I was truly curious. Yikes.

Don't sweat it, we were reffering to the debates that seem to ensue when discussions of how much Jeff makes, spends on houses, etc. take place.

It just seems like he' s got a lot of gems in his guitar collection and was curious as to his collection's worth....whatever. No worries.

I could probably hazzard a guess on the value of his pedals, but I couldn't even guess how much some of his vintage acoustics are worth.
Mr. Tony Margaritatime
My guess would be in the tens of thousands, easily.
a.miller
Does anyone even know the number Jeff has? I heard somewhere that when Jay was in the band they had a couple hundred guitars or something.

I'm picturing a shot from the Sam Jones film where they're in the loft, and ther seem to be a ton of guitars laying around. Hundreds sounds like a lot though... Chicago Music Exchange sound right to anyone else?
ShaneShaneShane
well, if you figure he has a few j-45's and other assorted gibson acoustics, as well as two pre-war martins, the santa cruz, as well as god knows how many effects and amps and electric guitars...such as vintage Casinos, Barney Kessels, SG's, Telecasters, apparently a white strat, etc...i'd say close to maybe 100 G's? just throwing out a figure. Kalle
He also has the same "Eko" guitar as me and it's worth quite a bit. You see it once in the IATTBYH movie it's hanging up on a wall.

Yeah I saw his white strat on Conan, 3 coils, I guess he could have had it on loan though, I hear Conan collects guitars too. His Vox AC30 is a hand wired reissue so that's a big bit of cash right there too.

If you've been around enough old guitars and then see some of the fakes they are really close but not close enough... Check out Greenwich Village Custom guitars or Bill Nash Guitars to see what I mean.... My guess on JT's guitars are they are worth a lot more than he's got into them. He probably bought them when they were not as outragous as they are now... I bought a 61 es 330 four years ago for 2k a good one goes for 6k now.. it's sick.. check out 50's les paul jr's... fast approaching the 15k mark.. two years ago you could of had a good on for half that.... :{
jhc
I'd put money on it that the strat on Conan was a fake, or a relic. Or a production MIM strat Seriously though, any reason to think it's rare/vintage, besides Tweedy's well known GAS? Edited May 24, 2006 by jhc
gtab
Or a production MIM strat Seriously though, any reason to think it's rare/vintage, besides Teddy's well known GAS? I may completely be wrong (disclaimer) but I tivo'd (in HD) and wen't back and looked and the wear doesn't look right on the guitar, no matter how good someone is you can't perfectly re-create 40 plus years of abuse. The gold double bound telecaster he plays is also a clone.... I love em I have a couple myself, I've got a les paul clone that is more accurate than the 59 re-issues that gibson makes (though they have gotten better and more accurate) it's cheaper too... boy.. my gas is acting up..i'll shut it now :}.... But that's my reasoning.. There's a couple guys in chicago that were/are making really good clones.. it's just a hunch...

I know its simple supply and demand but why the jump in demand?
gtab
forgive my ignorance, but why was there the jump in the price of vintage guitars? I know its simple supply and demand but why the jump in demand? Great question... I'm not sure.. NPR just did an expose on the subject. A couple of points stuck out. Baby boomers trying to relive their youth. They are now retiring, or have extra money to plop down on these things. Another is the poor performance of the stock market. When i quit my "real" job I liquidated my small 401k and bought a few guitars that have outpaced the dow... It's an investment you can play, which I think is kind of cool! It does seem completely outragous though and it looks like there is no end in site!!!

Well on my VHS tape of the low-definition TV all I could see was a white strat I didn't even see the wear. Still, is there any reason it wouldn't be a cheaper strat just beat to hell?
