Tell us how you really feel.

I suppose the inner critic in all of us feels the need to compare albums to ones that preceded them, but why not just enjoy the album for what it is instead of the need to immediately rank it in some canon of Dylan lore? I dont think anyone on here was claiming that this album breaks new ground or that DYlan has invented a new genre of music. Its just a fun album that people are enjoying. I am tired of the Lanois soaked production of Oh Mercy and TOOM, and I am very happy to be knee deep in an album of rollicking fun. And you know what? My guess is that Dylan was and is too. ;)

Will it have the staying power of the others? I dont know. I will worry about that a few years from now. For now, I am spinning it repeatedly and having a blast...

Thanks for your insight.

this one i enjoyed right off the bat, and while it may not be BETTER than the previous 2, i enjoy it more right now... his vocals are really warm and inviting (so is the production). it's a really funny record in ways too...

my feelings exactly. TOOM really needed to take time to grow on me. i remember loving Highlands from the word go, which is weird considering its length. L&T was quicker to get into, but the new one hit me straight away. I think Thunder on the mountain is a much better album opener than what the last 2 have. it might not be that much of a strong song, but it really grabs you and prepares you for whats to come..

actually, i might spin it next..

where are the colourful characters that populate Dylan's best works? What happened to Samantha Brown, Romeo and Juliet, Othella and Desdemona? Mr. Jinx and Miss Lucy, Old Bill, the waitress with the long white shiny legs have all packed up and left town, only to be replaced by anonymous "you"s and "me"s in most of these new songs.

Alicia Keys pops in on this one :shifty

ever hear about personal preference???
Objectively, MT is maybe, if it's lucky and on a very generous day, one-fifth as good as the preceding two albums.

TheMaker's statements are not opinions but irrefutable facts. His analysis is not the result of subjective preference, but of having the most enlightened ears on the planet, which is yet another verifiable fact.

Regardless of The Maker's lack of tact, I think he made some good points, namely that Highlands is about yearing. So stop with this "it drones on and on about nothing" business. It drones on about yearning, and it's repetitive and nearly ceaseless just like said yearning.

his last 3 records are a fairly timeless sound and even modern Dylan is better than most mainstream artists as far as i'm concerned.

that says it all for me :thumbup I diggin' this record the first listen, moreso than the last couple

I bought it on Friday and gave it a couple listens. It is a good album (maybe not great), but plenty good, despite the obvious borrowing from old blues songs.

Obviously the title Modern Times is meant as ironic, considering all the music is reminicient of stuff from the 50s and earlier, in some cases closer to the turn of the last century.

So stop with this "it drones on and on about nothing"

it is my opinion after all. I've only mentioned it twice and if others like it, they like it. so I should stop expressing my opinion?

btw, I love the rest of the songs on those albums. jeez. :hmm

For the first time in 30 years, Bob Dylan tops The Billboard 200 with "Modern Times." Not only is it the legendary songwriter's first album to reach the throne since "Desire" in 1976, it's also his highest debuting album and his best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. The Columbia set moved 192,000 copies in the United States in its first week.

I bought one......

Just goes to show, if you cop a few classic blues riffs you can still sell a ton of albums, but only if you have a long track record to go with it.

Can you name a point in his career where he hadn't already "copped a few classic blues riffs"?
