Dr. Steve Brule
Two of my favorite local bands who just put out new albums on Secretly Canadian are touring together. Both put on wonderful live shows, and I really wish I could see them together. I guess I can try to convince other people to check them out though. Don't miss them if you like to ROCK!!! LouieB
finally...I was trying to listen to some clips of Catfish Haven yesterday and couldn't get them to work. I like the name alone. Is this show gonna sell out? I figure I will make a last minute decision on it. Incidently Someone still loves Boris Yeltsin got a mention in the Reader this week. Weird. lizish
Meco were playing a ton of new stuff on Tues. It all sounded pretty great but I was really surprized that only 3-4 songs were from Fading Trails and older stuff. We had to shout out questions on the name of the new songs and they mentioned that most had only just come out of rehersal They were also playing tricks on the trumpet player. Apparently he had not had time to practise, so they threatened to play ALL their trumpet containing songs as a test. Met Groth as well and I must say, he is just the nicest guy. When songs: ohia played in Chicago a few months after the MECo record came out (one of the only shows with Jenny Benford) they played NOTHING from that album. They played mostly WCATB stuff. They were going in the studio that week to record it. I was a little annoyed at the time, but now listening to that show I realize how great it was. It's not mentioned on here, but Howe Gelb played guitar on "I Saw the Light".

Y'know they are just friggin strange sometimes. 50-60 minute shows, no encore, little acknowledgment that audience is even there, ever. I had to race from the airport to the show in fear that they would come on early and miss the whole thing. still, one of my favourite bands and when the keyboard guy steps back to grab that trumpet, I melt. Yeah, add to that the albums never quite matching up to the live shows or coming close to what you think they are going to be... I guess that's why we love them! It just seemed worlds away from the band I saw. Edited September 15, 2006 by lizish

lizish
Grand Buffet? yeah that was them. I was trying to remember the name but all I could up with was 'A la carte'.
bböp
We all know (or should) about the brilliance of the Magnolia Electric Co., but I wanted to put in a little plug for Catfish Haven. I've seen them a few times, most recently at the Stereogum show here in NYC last week and they're really good. Hopefully they'll have their backup singers with them down south. As a band, they might have a little improvement to make in terms of stage presence but I think their songs are really good. Sorta soul, sorta rock with a dash of country--hard to categorize but good. Dr. Steve Brule
Hopefully they'll have their backup singers with them down south. No, but they will have Adam Fitz playing guitar with them on this tour!!!!!!
Dr. Steve Brule
...aaaaand I may be going to Charlotte. It means missing Jandek and Rhys Chatham here though.
LouieB
No, but they will have Adam Fitz playing guitar with them on this tour!!!!!!The crazy thing about this is when I heard them the other day on here, I thought..damn, their lead singer sounds like Adam....then he gets a job with them? Pretty spooky. LouieB
summertweedy
taking some non-indie rock knowing friends to see them and i'm hoping they're on -- because the pressure's on me. wilco was our original plan but we all know what happened with that so they're going to see "this band that kinda sounds like neil young." LouieB
I dragged my lame ass to this show and was really impressed by Catfish Haven. The Double Door was mobbed and they put on a great show, particularly when the band added the additional musicians. Good stuff. LouieB
