Who are you calling "you lot"? I, for one, used to play first base in a 16-inch softball league. No "mittens" allowed. Our shortstop had a Nolan Ryan-like arm. I think my fingers are permanently disfigured.

you must have needed an extra large cup to accomodate 16 inches. Wow.

Sadly 16 inch softball is even starting to be less popular here in Chicago. Like many traditions, this one is disappearing.

That sucks. In my opinion, it's a far superior version of the game, at least if we're talking about slow-pitch.

This administration's policy is not to comment on ongoing investigations.

BTW you do play 16 inch softball with no gloves, which is a skill in and of itself.

not really lou. each sports company that sponsors teams have 16" leagues & they fill up quite quickly. all you have to do is check out half the parks around town in the summer & fall to see them.

Also, I didn't know you were Big Bank Hank, either...so 'hi'. :wave

hello, back.

As for this whole 16 inch softball thing. We played that at school in the south east of england too. I can't remember the ball being hard, or certainly nowhere near as hard a cricket ball, but it was bloody hard to catch it with one primary school-sized hand, and two hands never did look as impressive to the girls.

nah, that's just how we refer to those in positions of respect round here in these parts.

you know, like "hey butterfly, your truck's lookin' in need of some new mudflaps" and somesuch.

I must admit, I'm half-relieved and half-dissappointed by your response.

I'm disappointed in me too. I have been since the last beer last night, which to my surprise the coffee I'm drinking is not addressing adquately or expeditiously.

but rest assured, butterfly, that I'm going to keep trying. As soon as I locate the firm's pepto-bismal stash.

Certainly not as hard as a baseball or cricket ball, but a brand-new 16-inch softball is still a pretty formidable object when it's streaking across the diamond toward your face at a tremendous speed.

Seriously, that shortstop had a hell of an arm. He was a three-sport scholarship athlete in college -- one of those guys who was quarterback on the football team and shortstop on the baseball team.
