Even More goodies with Wowee Zowee reissue

Recommended Posts

WOW OUT

As a second installment of Matador's pre-order program (dubbed "Buy Early, Get Now"), we steam full speed ahead with three fan lavishing Pavement gems: a super rare live show, poster, and a very limited 7".

Wow Out is simple. When a customer pre-orders "Wowee Zowee: Sordid Sentinels Edition" from a participating store, they will receive information and a unique code via email to download an entire live Pavement show. On November 7th, customers will receive a super limited 7" with previously unreleased versions of "Blackout" and "Extradition" and a ridiculously awesome poster along with their super enhanced edition of Pavement's classic oeuvre.

The Download

The download is a show recorded on April 24, 1994 at The Palace in Los Angeles. The set finds the band introducing new songs that eventually made their way on to Wowee. It is a superb recording and according to our exhaustive research, this show is super rare, even among the most ardent of Pavement tape traders and archivists.

Pavement at The Palace on April 24, 1994:

Box Elder

Range Life

Brinx Job

Brink of the Clouds

Unfair

Easily Fooled

Best Friend's Arm

She Believes

Silent Kid

Black Out

Summer Babe

Elevate Me Later

Heckler Spray

In the Mouth a Desert

Fight This Generation

Debris Slide

encore:

Two States

Stop Breathing

The Poster

Remember in the last page of every MAD magazine they had a 'mad fold-in'? Same idea here only it's a 22" x 28" poster with original artwork by Steve Keene. All posters will be folded to ensure easy shipping.

The 7"

To make sure we're not becoming too digital, lucky customers will also get a "Wow Out"-only 7" with never before released versions of "Black Out" (a-side) and "Extradition" (b-side). According to Stephen, this version of "Black Out" (which is not the album recording) was recorded around the time Crooked Rain came out. It was originally intended for a compilation curated by Thurston Moore, but that never materialized. Matador's vault plunderers found it on a reel of final mixes from the Random Falls sessions in NYC from early 1994. "Extradition" is a version with different vocals and a slightly different mix from the album version.

The download will be available to the customer within days of purchase and the 7" will ship with the customer's copy of "Wowee Zowee: Sordid Sentinels Edition".

Sounds great, is there a link to this on the Matador site yet? I haven't been able to find it, and I want to figure out where I can pre-order this from to get this.

I'm going to encourage everyone who is interested in this to go to their local indie record store (or call them) and see if they are particpating in this. This is a great thing from Matador to try and get people going to the local instead of Best Buy or whatever. That said, if you are in an area that doesn't have an awesome indie store:

Tragically Wheeling and even Charleston West Virginia fall into the "no awesome indie store" category, thank God for insound.

I know I am in the minority on this, but I have never been able to get into Wowee Zowee. I love Pavement and I would count Slanted as one of my ten favorite albums ever, but WZ just doesn't do it for me.

I doubt you are in the minority. It is my least favorite of their stuff (yeah, I like Terror Twilight better), but considering I only own it on LP, it's only $14.99 for two very full CDs, and all the bonus goodies, I'm more than happy to take a chance. That's another thing, how come those major label 2 disc deluxe reissues cost at least $32.99 (like Matthew Sweet Girlfriend, among many others) and Matador gives the same treatment for a mere $14.99?

because matador respects their customers. somehow it's always the indie-ish labels selling shit for cheap

Most likely that list should be accurate. Any store that orders direct from Matador can participate. Call your favorite and ask, preordering at our store merely consists of having yr name, phone and email written down.

Great! I'll call them tomorrow.

Wowee Zowee was never my favorite. In fact, I would place it fourth on my list but it's still a great album. I'm not near as psyched for this one as I was for the S+E one. I am psyched about finally having Painted Soldiers on an album though. I wasn't excited about the CRCR one either, but I got really surprised by the extras on it. I hope this one does the same.

Thanks for the heads up on the pre-order. Just got the email for the download, and this show is UNREAL!!! :rock

edit: this is the best sounding Pavement recording i've ever heard, and it's definitely sounds like them at their best...unfortunately, i didn't see them for the first time until '95

also, the actual date of this show was April 21st

I haven't even ordered the album but I got the email. Quite strange. However, I did add it to the shopping cart at the insound website, but cancelled the order when I saw the postage costs. The show sounds great, so can't complain :)

has anyone d/l the leak of the reissue?

im curious as to whether the alt mix of "We Dance" still has the fade out at the end... or if you can hear the "five times forever and you'll never get lost" without cranking her up.

cause... im making a tape for my girlfriend. and we dig that song. :wub
