dixiecupdrinker
Hey all- I'm assuming I'm not the only one 'round these parts who makes an occasional transaction on eBay . I sell as well as buy (too much). I thought I've seen it all until now. This one ALMOST got me, and I consider myself to be ungetable. Ok, so I was bidding on a dedicated Nikon film scanner (the LS-5000, in case you are curious). I did not win it. No biggie. Three or so days later (Sunday morning to be exact), I received a Second Chance Offer in my email. I opened it up and it looked like the real deal. Usually those scheming morons can't bother to use the spell checker or even really master English enough to make their phishing mails seem convincing to someone who knows better. This had no spelling errors and had all the eBay stuff just like it was supposed to be. The graphics looked perfect and had all the typical eBay language in place. It was very convincing. For a brief second I thought that for what I bid, the offer seemed too good to be true. But, I went back to the auction to check it out and thought, well, o.k., this is good to go. I wrote the guy back and said I'd like to take him up on the Second Chance Offer. He sent me back an email that said I should pay him Western Union. For some reason, this made the red flag go up. I only use Paypal because of the
c53x12
So it sounds like you bailed before you actually got taken, which is a good thing. Congrats on spotting the fake. I've heard that these bogus second chance offers are a growing problem. The few times I've gotten one, I've written back with a lowball offer, and then there's no response. I doubt flooding this guy's PO box is going to have much effect. He can just close the box and open a new one anytime he likes, right?

But, you know, it helped me feel better by sharing it and wishing really, really bad things upon this prick. You never know, someone might come up with something creative and evil enough that it only has to be sent to his PO box once. dcd
MrRain422
Are you suggesting Unabomber tactics or something? Jeez. Seriously though, this guy is a prick and I hope he does get some comeuppance.

Mr. Heartbreak
I'd never sign up a complete stranger for porn (especially from work!), but I figured I'd get the party started here. I just signed him up for communications from www.unifying.com. jhc
I've never been phished this way, where they use eBay Second Chance Offers for something I bid on. This is a very common scam these days. Good that you recognized the red flags. Too bad you weren't phished with one of the "I'll send you a money order and you send me back the change" scams. Then you could send Rigi a fake money order
dixiecupdrinker
I'm guessing he won't be too thrilled about it. Thank you for your contribution. He might not be too thrilled about it, but it makes me feel better. Now that I am home and not on a work computer, let the games begin! BTW, you rock. Thank you, Sir! anyway, dcd
cryptique
yeah. i have had bricks come wrapped up in the BRE before. damn that gets expensive! A friend of mine back in the '80s had a "Brick-of-the-Month Club." Whatever unsolicited snail mail pissed him off the most that month, he'd tape one of their postage-paid return cards to a brick and send it back. If they really pissed him off, he'd try to send a cinder block, or a second brick. I always thought that was fantastic. Never tried it myself, though maybe I should. dixiecupdrinker
Unless I could somehow brainwash this fugger into hitting himself about the face and groinal region repeatedly with a brick until he severely bleeds, I need to come up with something that makes the point (the point that he is a fugging areshole) upon just opening the package. I may just need to have faith that karma will take care of him. But, I do like the brick idea for some of these other clowns who won't stop flooding my mailbox with crap. anyway, dcd

Some nice folks in the Windy City got my account info thru paypal phishing and tried to clean out my checking account. Not a fun experience. Man, that sucks. Did they find out who it was? I seriously feel that scumbags who try to steal other people's hard earned money in this way need to severely beat. How bad did they get ya? Did you get any of it back? dcd

Did you get any of it back? dcdFortunately they did not get any money, but tried to using some sort of fraudulent atm card. The bank said they tried to take $250 out of an atm in Chicago, and I live in Salt Lake City.... It really was inconvenient at the time because I was watching my younger sister while my parents were out of town and my debit card got declined at dinner...on the day I got paid. So I knew something was wrong. I had to get a new bank account, put a fraud alert out with all of the national credit agencies...etc. It was a royal pain in the ass. I always worry if they got my social security or something, somehow. I agree with you - people who do that shit need a beating.
kcc
i just wanted to say thanks for posting this thread. yesterday i got an email from a very excited friend who had lost an auction for a $4000 printing press, but got a 'second chance' email, offering the press for $3000. i was in the middle of writing her back to congratulate her when i remembered this thread. i copied and pasted the post into my reply, suggesting she be careful.. she checked it out, and sure enough it was a scam. fuckers.. at least she's not out $3000 that she doesn't have to spare in the first place. so thanks, dcd. me and my pal appreciate you putting the word out.
