Impossible Germany meaning

Recommended Posts

Thats my thinking. I think the Impossible Germany, Unlikely Japan bit is just saying that it is impossible for them to communicate.

yea im thinking of it from the viewpoint of America...germany = impossible to deal with, japan = unlikely to communicate with us....its really quite genious metaphorically when you think about it.

Jeff "i'm not a poet, and i know it" from Woodgrain.....i guess he was wrong on that one

I feel like it's just something Jeff thought sounded nice.

i think so too. either that or i'm too dumb to come up with a possible meaning.

because it sounds nice is very much a likely reason. i love my songwriting that way anyway.

Seriously, I think it's pretty clear to me that it's written about the relational dischord that occurs between a man and his wife when the man goes off on tour. This is a common theme for Tweedy, I'd say...which makes sense. Listen to IG and than Say You Miss Me...I find them similar in theme.

.....so you're saying that esp. Germany and Japan would be the ones that cause the most trouble :ohwell ?

:shifty

Your interpretation makes sense though; Sue must feel like a single parent for a good chunk of the year.

Or maybe it's how someone you love can ironically become your enemy, even though you love them.

My take on it as follows: it's about communication difficulties in a relationship, long distances being one of them. The importance that each partner puts on the other's willingness and ability to listen.

I don't think "Impossible Germany Unlikely Japan" has any literal significance, other than possibly alluding to being on the road and far away from a spouse. In poetry, what is being said is not as nearly important as how it is being said. I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff Tweedy the poet songwriter just liked how the words sounded and fit with the rest of the song's lyrics. As a result, the words themselves become a metaphor for the overall song. Someone off the street would see the words "Impossible Germany Unlikely Japan" as nonsensical; a Wilco fan would see them and think about the song and what it says to them.
