Racial slur on sofa stuns family

Recommended Posts

So does the phrase mean that it's the same color as black people, or that it's a color black people will like? (If it's the latter, it appears to be somewhat accurate.)

All kidding aside, I found the most interesting part of the article to be the historical disinformation the mother fed the daughter, that the slur is a "bad name that blacks were called during the days of slavery." What?! Did general usage stop in 1865? Even the notion that it's something "blacks were called" is patently false. It was considered standard even by educated African-American writers as late as the 1890s, not only being called that, but calling themselves that.

If the girl were 2, I could see it, but I think a 7-year-old can handle a history lesson. Makes me wonder how ignorant the mother is, or whether she's trying to "protect" her daughter.
