CasinoKing
Do you guys think Wilco will ever play the smaller theatres in Chicago again? I for one hope so. I love going to see a show at the Auditorium but nothing beats a show at the Vic or the Riv. I took a buddy of mine to an auditorium show and he enjoyed it immensley. He liked the energy and I told him the smaller shows display it even better. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a summer show at the Vic. A evening when the cubs are playing in the afternoon would be perfect. Am I asking for too much?...wishful thinking

nalafej
I sense that their popularity is waining even as they become more regonizable to most people. I bet we'll be able to see them at the Vic pretty regularly. The question really is, will they ever play a show at a place like Martyrs again?

Plan on that in about 20 years. I don't see their popularity waning at all. Not as long as Jeff keeps showing up on the covers of music magazines and they can play in every corner of the world (Europe, Australia, the far east, etc.) This train isn't slowing down any time soon. dannygutters
I hope the don't go back to the riv, I hate that place, it's hard to see and oversold all the time. I'll take the aud over the riv anyday. Tho a Vic or park west show would be sweet business.
LouieB
I really don't think there is any chance they will ever return to the Riv. Hell, hardly anyone plays the Riv anymore anyway. It makes the Vic look like a freakin palace. LouieB
explodo
Maybe I will give them twenty bucks to play my housewarming party in Logan Square whenever I get around to moving and hosting a housewarming party in Logan Square.

It seems after an indie band is too big for the metro but too small for the Auditorium or the Aragon they shove them in the riv. I have skipped Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens and the Decemberists multiple times because of them being at the riv. Which is sad cause I like those guys.

Which is sad cause I like those guys. You have a point there....after a long dry spell at the Riv, the Decemberists have played twice of late. The Riv appears slightly bigger than the Vic and alot bigger than the Metro and dumpier than both. On the other hand it could be worse, those type of groups could get booked into the Aragon. Too bad the Uptown isn't open anymore. LouieB

Edie
I saw the Grateful Dead at the Uptown... transcendent Lobby Interior Exterior The saddest thing is that people (some sanctioned, others not) are taking the architectural treasures from the inside and outside of the theatre. There has been a "save the uptown" group forever, but I don't think they have ever gotten the city's attention.

LouieB
I saw Bob Marley at the Uptown and maybe Santana too..can't remember exactly... At this point the rehab of the Uptown is so prohibititively expensive, I don't think it will ever happen, sadly. The amount of money that would have to be put into it to bring it back up to both code and some sort of semblance of its original beauty, wouldn't be worth it. Unlike the Chicago and Auditorium theaters, which are in the Loop, the Uptown isn't in an area that would attract the really big acts. Someday maybe. (I used to work right next door to it, and saw them film parts of Backdraft there.) LouieB
Artifex
I saw MMJ at the Riv and didn't mind it at ALL. I got there an hour early, got right up front for MMJ. *shrug*
thisyearsgirl
ask any of my friends about my obsession with the uptown. while i am a "friend of the uptown", i avoid passing it whenever possible. i seriously cry sometimes with the thought of that treasure sitting there, locked up in political bullshit and left to rot. twenty years from now, when there are condos or an empty lot there in its place, people will say, "man, we should have saved that place." then again, maybe that's only in fort wayne...where paradise has been paved over with numerous empty parking lots. the problem is that it's too big and will cost too much to fix up. still, i'm gonna keep praying that something will work out. doesn't oprah ever go past there?...she has the power and the cash to do something about it. sorry for the rant...carry on.
