tyrone slothrop
So I was looking up the lyrics for "Im Always in Love," and wondering what the fuck was up with Tweedy and co. with the whole "smoke pot, smoke pot" refrain that sounds during the third verse (I don't get the connection / If this is only a test / I hope I do my best / You know I won't forget)? craigwinn
probably also a nod to the Beatles' "smoke pot smoke pot everybody smoke pot" refrain even though they were saying "everybody's got one". I forget which song it was in... i wonder what causes such short-term memory loss
Sir Stewart
I think they're actually saying "pot smoke, pot smoke..."

Groo
I've always heard it as "swap bop swap bop." Just sort of nonsensical fun words.

Atticus
This song is the entire reason I started smoking pot.    Was it a gateway to other acts like j.j. cale, velvet underground and alice in chains?
TJ O'Pootertoot
I think the Beatles ref is the most on. They're just having a laugh and I don't think it means anything at all. IIRC, on the commentary track on I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Sam Jones says something like, "Well, now everybody can tell what you're saying on the backing vocals!" because they show Stirrat while rehearsing the song. I STILL couldn't tell what it was for a while but it's definitely "smoke pot" and I'm pretty sure it's just the boys being silly. Kalle
I always thought it was "I smoke, I smoke" but now when you guys say "Smoke pot, smoke pot" I swear he says that! For any doubt that John likes to indulge a little listen to his podcast episode.
socbret
For any doubt that John likes to indulge a little listen to his podcast episode."The attitude and the message and the groove of this song is so right on." Nice I think we need a weekly podcast by him.

plasticeyeball
IIRC, on the commentary track on I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Sam Jones says something like, "Well, now everybody can tell what you're saying on the backing vocals!" because they show Stirrat while rehearsing the song. I think at that same point in the commentary, Jeff says something about it being distorted or recorded backwards on the record or something. giraffo
it sounds like "smoke pot" to me on both version, but on the record it's slightly more distorted.
H to the ickle
It is smoke pot... They admit to it on the commentary for IATTBYH.
