this could help the Sox

The Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers have agreed in principle to a trade involving Eric Gagne, and the Red Sox are now negotiating with the former Cy Young winner to get him to accept the trade.

The Rangers are set to receive prospects in the deal. Boston is not on Gagne's approved list of 12 teams he can be traded to.

After missing much of the past two years with injuries, Gagne has returned to form this season with a 16 saves in 17 chances and a 2.16 ERA.

A source told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, that the talks between the White Sox and Red Sox regarding Jermaine Dye are dead. It's believed Boston offered Wily Mo Pena and Craig Hansen. Dye seems unlikely to be dealt to another team. The White Sox could attempt to re-sign him for two or three years."

ESPN is reporting that Engel Beltre would be included in an Eric Gagne deal with the Rangers, giving Texas three players.Kason Gabbard and David Murphy are believed to be the other two. This makes the trade look a whole lot better for Texas. Beltre is just 17 and is even further away than Elvis Andrus and Neftali Feliz, but he was one of the top international players available in the 2006 signing period. He ended up taking a $600,000 bonus from Boston.

So...what would the Red Sox do with Pap if Gagne insists on being closer? I guess he'd be in the rotation? Set-up? This isn't making sense to me. Anyone?

No way Gagne takes the closer spot from Paps. Perhaps a co-closer spot, but he's more likely to be middle relief the majority of the time. I realize Gagne has stated he wants to close, and this may inevitably hold the deal up. But I think sharing closer duties to both appease him and give Paps a break when needed would be in the cards.

Yes, i assumed Gagne comes for the 8th inning when I made my statement that this was bad for my rotisserie team. Gagne is an expensive set-up man for me. I agree with Lammymeow that this issue could hold up the trade from Gagne's perspective.

The Padres have acquired Morgan Ensberg from the Astros, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.

Ensberg, Rob Mackowiak, Scott Hairston... we hope the Padres realize they're only allowed to carry 25 players at a time. Adding both Ensberg and Mackowiak seems to show how they don't have a lot of faith in Kevin Kouzmanoff.

Thanks. Okay, I realize you always need pitching, but I still don't get why they're after him.

Simply put, he makes the 'pen a lot stronger for the push to/through the playoffs. He'll also be great bait for the off-season (draft picks?).

I believe it's being reported that the deal is going through and has been agreed to.

What will be Okajima's role?

Same as it has been barring injury, I'd guess. Really, adding another quality arm for the last third of the season is a great move. Gagne offers relief for some arms and protection against injury from the current guys in the 'pen, as well.

Only if they sign him to an extension. His contract with the Rangers was just a one year deal. This deal is a short-term rental for the Red Sox, but probably worth it.

Why would he need to be signed to an extension? The Red Sox can use him as bait at the end of the season regardless of his status as rental/extended contract.

I don't understand what you mean. He is not under contract to anyone after this season. The Red Sox have traded for him to add some depth to their bullpen for the rest of the season and the playoffs. Are you suggesting that they would trade him before the season is over?

I guess they could trade him to another team that is trying to make a playoff run before the end of August (the deadline for playoff rosters is September 1st), but after August 1st, they'd have to put him on waivers first, and someone would almost certainly claim him. Also, if they only wanted him for the month of August, then this trade would be pretty pointless, don't you think?

Edit: Yeah, what he said.

Forget it, I misunderstood your initial point. My b.

It looks like they're trying to re-word the contract incentives lingo to "games played" from "games finished" for Gagne so as to avoid potentially having to move Papelbon to a set-up spot (which again, I can't see ).

Gagne: Done deal

By David Lefort, Boston.com Staff

According to NESN, the Red Sox have officially acquired Eric Gagne from the Texas Rangers in exchange for pitcher Kason Gabbard, outfielder David Murphy, and minor league outfielder Engel Beltre today.

Unidentified major league sources told NESN that Gagne has agreed to waive his no-trade clause to Boston and has also agreed to serve as the team's set-up man.

Gagne has thrown 3 playoff innings. And his ERA is 12.00 in the all-star game... Should be interesting to see him on the mound in the Bronx in September. I happen to think he'll be fine and this is a great pickup, but it's gonna be fun.
