I saw Bonds homer at Wrigley last year. It was actually sort of cool. I'm glad I was there.

I saw Willie McCovey hit his 518th home run (of 521 in his career) at Candlestick in the first game of a doubleheader against the Reds on July 1, 1979.

That's all the Giants slugger action I need.

I was going to reply "Why do you hate baseball?" to this but I was worried it would come across as serious.

Haha, fair enough.

I was upset about the whole steroids scandal, but have come to accept that it was so widespread that getting worked up about each individual juicer is pointless. I decided I either had to get over it, or stop watching baseball all together.

I still hate Bonds because he's an asshole, but don't really care about the juicing anymore.

I'm sorry. I was a little kid in 1974 and remember how dignified, how revered Hank Aaron was when he broke the record. Even minus the steroids, Barry is probably the best player of our era, but I really hope something happens so Aaron's record remains intact.

Uh, I doubt it. He only needs a few more. He'd have to be injured to the point of being crippled for him to give up on it before he breaks it.

History will judge him harshly, and he'll be in third on the all time list within 10-15 years anyway.

Like I'm looking forward to A-Rod being the next one. Oy.

I used to have a sweet, large poster of Aaron rounding the bases (with the two guys/kids chasing after him) after hitting #715 hanging prominently next to my bed as a kid. I wish I still had it.

Trivia (no googling): Who was the player who nearly tumbled over the wall in an attempt to catch Aaron's #715?

Bobby V played right field though. I think the homer was to left.Bobby V was either hurt by 74, or on the Angels also.
Yeah, #715 was like left-center field. And yes, I think he was playing for the Angels by then.

Bill Buckner.
Atta boy.

knew you'd get it

I only knew that because I used to watch Cubs games on cable back in the '70s when Buckner was their first baseman, and someone (possibly Jack Brickhouse) mentioned it, and for some reason I remembered it.

Ooh, or maybe it was Joe Niekro. Though I'd remember if it was a Niekro, I thinkTi

I think the guy I'm thinking of played briefly for BOS a few years later. Tim something.

"They were bored 'til I came out there," said Bonds, who planned to also take Wednesday off from starting to give his sore legs another day to heal.

Anyone watch the video of him saying this? I just love how arrogant he is.

My friend recently got back from a trip to California and attended a Giants game, he said they give Barry a standing ovation every plate appearance and seem to unconditionally love him. I will never understand how Giants fans worship this cheating prick.

If you had the best player in the league for the past decade who was going for the most revered record in sports on your team, and you were at the game, I bet you anything you wouldn't boo. And no matter where he is when he breaks the record, people are going to cheer, like him or not.

I really don't think it's that big of a deal if he breaks it. It doesn't take anything away from Aaron, and if anything, in context it makes what Aaron did even more impressive considering the era he played in was dominated by pitchers for a decade (the 60's). If Aaron had the middle of his career in the 90's he'd have hit 850 easy. And he still wouldn't be as good a player as Bonds.
