yankhotelfox
Welcome Sara. Nice first posts. As for "Ripple," it's torturte to hear Jeff play it. It's such a nostaligic song for me. I'm not sure he knocks the Dead and their fans exactly; they are very dedicated as are Wilco fans. Jeff doesn't seem that closeminded to me.
jc4prez
definitely reminds me more of a paul song. theologians is pretty johnish to me. as is IATTBYH.although we are talking about jeff tweedy. the instances that you note probably had as much to do with jay bennet as they did jeff.i'm not sure i can cite any examples of similarities, but i've always thought that wilco was the type of band that could pull off some incredible dead covers. much better than ryan adams. but after hearing tweedy cover ripple and absolutley bash the dead and their fans, i don't think we'll ever get to hear it. being as though phil came out and sang ripple with wilco i highly doubt there isn't some love. Also keep in mind Jeff did do "real" verisons of the song.

jc4prez
don't rember the exact date but phil lesh sang back up (maybe that is the proof of Jeff not being into them) hahaha (if your not a dead head your probably thinking im crazy)

jc4prez
Thank ya Froggie. Nothing better then hearing one of my favorite bands play one of my favorite songs with one of the people who made that long strange trip possible.
Guest Alan
all that talk about Ripple, here's a nice solo version with some excellent Tweedy banter: http://www.sendspace.com/file/a8ozxf this is the version i was talking about. If my words did glowsomebody else has to sing this songbecause i don't know each and every word and if i didi probably wouldn't sing thembecause i am not a grateful dead fan ripple on still watermumblemumble you're scarrying me very much nowi always suspectedthat a lot of this crowd smoked a lot of pot and drank a lot of acidback in the hippy daysoh it's so so sad that you're wilco fans then he goes on to say he suspects that dead fans were more about the drugs than the music. he calls it a defacto honor to have dead fans in the crowd. it's not the most endearing rendition of the song, and leads me to believe that i'll never get some good dead covers out of this band, even though they could do a hell of a job with a bunch of their songs. jc4prez
Honestly I wouldn't take that clip to seriously. The fact that jeff went back and learned the lyrics and would invite phil on stage preety much says he is open minded. You got to rember Jeff didn't grow up on the dead and for most people their is this stigma because of the fans. So i can see why he would be joking like that. Do I think we will hear wilco cover the dead again? probably not. BUT PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG!
FourStrongWinds
that jeff version's odd, i wouldnt take it too seriously though...i would imagine he is infact a dead fan they list them in the wilco book on that big solar system of music thingy
yankee
What songs do you hear that in, and why?I hear it on Hate It Here, not the chorus but definitely the verses. The riff in Hate it Here is almost identical to the riff in a Beatles song . . . Jeff:Hate it here (na na na na na na na na) When you're gone (na na na na na na na na) John:You say it's your birthday (na na na na na na na na) Well happy birthday to you (na na na na na na na na) (OK, I don't know which Beatle wrote that one, but you could mix up the two songs easy.) GutenAbend
There is no comparing jeff to john lennon! As much as i love wilco and jeff tweedy,he cannot even come close to lennon.Lennon was one in a million. He captured his era unlike anyone else, whereas jeff has not even came close to it.Wilco is just a good rock band and that is all.Lennon and the beatles represented their times perfectly.
