solace
needless to say I disagreewhat one would you say is worse?all i know is, the lyrics to "What If" are some of the worst i've heard in years. World Without Tears was my least fave of hers until this one, but this one makes WWT sound pretty amazing. i'd rank her albums as: Car Wheels (head and shoulders above the rest of her catalog, no question)Sweet Old WorldSelf-TitledHappy Woman BluesRamblin'EssenceWorld Without TearsWest

Lucinda Williams/Car Wheels on a Gravel Road/West/Essence/Sweet Old World2. Happy Woman Blues/World Without Tears3. Ramblin'4. Live at the Fillmore The Fillmore being easily the worst of Lu catalog, and one of the worst live albums ever minus this one, any of her album is certainly less boring than every album by The National... solace
minus this one, any of her album is certainly less boring than every album by The National... ok, now you're just being an asshole for the sake of, congrats!
Littlebear
ok, now you're just being an asshole for the sake of, congrats! No, I'm absolutely sincere. For the sake of the human kind, I can't understand how you can prefer any National album to West. So there.
solace
No, I'm absolutely sincere. For the sake of the human kind, I can't understand how you can prefer any National album to West. So there.that's fine, but you specifically called out the National when i was just discussing Lucinda and hadn't said anything specifically about them. i'll start a poll just to show you many people on here will prefer it then because i can guarantee it'll be a landslide. not saying that makes one better than the other, but you're acting like i'm insane for preferring The National to Lucindia, especially their 2007 albums. if you've paid attention to this forum at all this year you'd realize that's far from the case. also, how can you be "disappointed" by the latest National album when you obviously dislike them past or present? it's called being consistent... were you truly disappointed by Andrew Bird, Iron & Wine, & Radiohead too? or have you just never liked them ever? trying to understand here (and not being sarcastic or a dick in this instance...). being disappointing albums to me means having some sort of context to go by or being let down from a previous release. i don't think i've ever been disappointed in an album by a band i wasn't familiar with prior or that i disliked prior, maybe that's just me. Littlebear
you're acting like i'm insane for preferring The National to Lucinda You must be joking. You called me an asshole in the first place, just because you're convinced the Boxer is better than West! And yeah, I'm constantly disappointed by the other bands, simply because reading many points of this board I should hope for better things. But that's not the case... And to my big regret : yeah, the Wilco album, that I liked upon the first listens, hasn't grown on me, and I call that a disappointment, too. And third yeah: the POLL, which I'm sure will choose the National by a wide marge, won't proove anything else than the majority of this board's taste. Glad to hear that in advance from you. Glad to hear that in advance from you. no, you seemed like you specifically brought up the National for the sake or arguing is all. i wasn't dissing on Lucinda previously at all, just that i was really really disappointed in West. i was being pretty facetious in my "asshole" comment if you couldn't tell. lastly, if you can look me in the eye and call the National's song "Abel" boring, i don't know what to say anywho, boring or not, Matt is a stellar lyricist imo and I think that's a huge draw for many many people. Littlebear
lastly, if you can look me in the eye and call the National's song "Abel" boring, i don't know what to say "Abel" is actually the only song that didn't bore me...
solace
"Abel" is actually the only song that didn't bore me...Mr. November? Murder Me Rachel? Lit Up? those are every bit as rockin' as Abel (not as Pixies-ish however) i know a lot of people who enjoy those types of songs by the National but don't care much for the rest, i guess i can somewhat understand, but Abel, as much as I love it, isn't an example of Matt's great lyrics really, just a great rockin' song. their moodier/darker midtempo stuff is what gets me going most (Fake Empire, All The Wine, Lucky You, Green Gloves, Secret Meeting, etc.). that and i adore Matt's Leonard Cohen-esque vox. I gotta agree with Kyle on this... I don't understand how an album can be disappointing if you don't like the band. I couldn't get through In Rainbows more than a handful of times, but the album wasn't a big disappointment to me - I've never liked Radiohead. Just because lots of people on this board like them and I don't doesn't make it a disappointment either. Just different tastes...

Everyone is free to diss. I understood you were very disappointed in West. I don't know why I shouldn't add that I find any Lucinda Williams album less boring than any The National one. It's my point. And what's wrong with arguing. Arguing = stating opinions, right? You called me an asshole "facetiously", you say. I'd say a bit too "easily", as for me. You know, I said "disappointments" because I was following the way the lists were made before me I could have said simply "the worst" - it doesn't matter... and to boot, the idea of a "constant disappointment" makes sense as well... (though I won't stand by this argument for the rest of my life, you know...)

The sound isn't close to the Pixies to me - maybe from some Frank Black albums, but not the Pixies. The Pixies were one of the best bands ever (especially with the first two albums). They were the opposite of many New Wave bands from the 80's (Jesus & Mary Chain excepted): creative, exciting, never boring (unlike Frank Black today).
Mystik Spiral
You know, I said "disappointments" because I was following the way the lists were made before meI could have said simply "the worst" - it doesn't matter... It does matter, though. I'm fairly certain that on the lists posted before you, "biggest disappointments" were albums that the poster expected a lot from, and the album didn't deliver. For example, my two biggest disappointments for this year were Wilco (I actually agree with you on that one) and Rilo Kiley. Not because the albums were terrible, but because they weren't up to par with what I've come to expect from two of my favorite bands. I'll use Radiohead again as an example. I didn't like the album, but it wasn't a disappointment because I've never cared much for any of their albums. disappoint-verb1. to fail to fill the expectations or wishes of

It's all crap nowadays! Same crappy guitar and dialed-in lyrics. Blah! I am sorry, but Uncle Bob has lost it. As the years go by, I get less and less into his work. I used to be a big Bob fan but now it's getting old. I know I am not the only one who says it, but the man needs an editor. Too much of the same 'ol stuff. The last good album he put out was the Keene Brothers record. I am just really disappointed with his recent output. I just get tired of 10+ albums a year with only an albums worth of good material on it. It's too much! My top 5:Arcade Fire

I'm not quite ready to agree that Uncle Bob has lost it, but my level of fandom has dropped a notch in the last few years. I still slavelishly buy everything he releases on CD (I no longer have an LP player that actually works, so I don't buy the vinyl-only stuff), but that's just out of habit. I've been a fan since 1993, and it's hard to stop buying his stuff. I hope he stops collaborating solely with Todd Tobias and starts recording with a real band again, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm getting the feeling that he's putting more time and effort into his artwork than his songwriting/recording. At this point I think I respect Bob more than I actually like him, ya know what I mean? That being said, Bad Football and Coast to Coast Carpet to Love kicked my ass. They'd definitely make it onto my Top 20 of 2007.
