cryptique
I like Nels but does anyone think Jeff might start to get jealous real quick of all the attention that Nels is drawing on stage?Nah. I don't think Nels is playing any sort of Jay Bennett role -- he's just a shit-hot guitarist, and Jeff clearly likes to surround himself with fantastic musicians (e.g., Glenn), so I doubt there's a jealousy problem. lost highway
Yeah I think the JB thing was an issue of someone taking complete control and alienating other members and potentially the bands frontman/primary songwriter. Not an attention thing. If Tweedy was a bed-wetter about attention he would of canned Sansone the first time he donned a vest, teased his hair and did a grandiose windmill at the very edge of the stage. fatheadfred
The good thing about Wilco is all the stages they've been through. I have to admit I am a recent convert, but when listening to their shows, like Spiders from the Pittsburgh 03 concert, the band has many different faces. Â Nels rocks and understands his role, he ain't no rookie. It seems to me like Jeff likes to divert attention from himself at times to kind of get in the moment with a song, then get it back again. IRememberDBoon
my very, very good friend tells me yesterday that he thinks nels has ruined wilco. i can't say i agree. should i stab him when i see him this weekend?  Is your friend President George W Bush? Thats about the damn dumbest thing ive heard in a long long time.
Elixir Sue
I like some of what Nels adds...Ashes of American Flags comes to mind...but I wouldn't mind if the lineup were Jeff, John, Pat, and Glenn. Sorry Mikael and Nels.

Nels is not a singer/songwriter, so isn't interested in giving that kind of input to the band. LouieB

IRememberDBoon
I love Pat so Im a little bit reluctant to tell this story but....... I was at a show last year (cant remember which one) and he came out for the encore. He started doing windmills and jamming his azz off whatever. He looked and his geetar wasnt even plugged in. His face turned red as a beet and he plugged it in and started jamming again. I was thinking they must have him light in the mix.
sweetheart-mine
pat looks straight out of the kinks -- a sort of rounder-haired ray davies. i get a kick out of him. i've never been to a show and can't tell pat's sound from recordings, so i don't know what would be missing if he weren't there. given jeff's depth of musicianship, it seems right to assume that pat is there for a good reason. solace
What's wrong with Pat? What's annoying about him?not a big fan of rock star posturing i guess... he's a fine musician, but his facial expressions & moves just seem kinda funny compared to the rest of Wilco is all. he's pretty much a non-entity for me at Wilco shows anymore though, if nothing else he's hilarious to watch i suppose, but i wouldn't necessarily miss his musical contributions either. then again, for keys it's either him or Mikael... not meaning to diss on him at all either, like i said, he's a fine musician just my .
caliber66
pat looks like Chris Hillman of the Byrds.I agree.
giraffo
I find Nels' addition a funny role..it's almost like overkill. Jeff definitely has his own style and as he's shown he can definitely play on a level near, if not on the same level as Nels. I find it very interesting how extremely malleable their roles are, in the sense that they have two lead guitarists but they can switch it up without thinking, really. edit: also, I think Pat's windmills and exagerated stage show is just really an act or tongue in cheek. solace
he's shown he can definitely play on a level near, if not on the same level as Nels.  no offense, but even Jeff would probably take issue with that statement... not that Jeff isn't a great gutiarist, he is, but still. check out Nels work outside Wilco if you truly believe that to be true. lost highway
if the lineup were Jeff, John, Pat, and Glenn. Sorry Mikael and Nels. Â Who can dislike Mikael Jorgensen. Thats like saying you don't like Grover, or Kermit the Frog, or Leroy Bach. The dude is humble and musical. He might not drive the visual aspects of the live show but he contributes a lot of texture and harmony.

Generally anyone will agree Nels is technically a better player, but Jeff's playing has more of an aesthetic feel and I find it just as pleasing as his partner's. I just think Pat could fill that role (texture and harmony), play keys, AND play guitar. Not necessarily at the same time, though.

yankee
my very, very good friend tells me yesterday that he thinks nels has ruined wilco. i can't say i agree. should i stab him when i see him this weekend?  Nels Cline: GREAT addition to Wilco, or THE GREATEST addition to Wilco? (I could ask the same about Glen.) So yeah, I really like the current Wilco lineup. They sound great as a band and I get the impression that they work well as a group and enjoy making music together.  I suspect that even if someone like . . . that guy on keys whose name I can never remember . . . Mikeal? Anyway, . . . I suspect that if any piece of this finely tuned rock machine were removed, his absence would be felt more than his presence is noticed. All together, they have such a rich texture and I like the way Jeff's style and Nels' style of playing compliment each other. But yeah, Pat kind of cracks me up. He looks like he belongs in the Kooks. So yeah, you should stab your friend with a pointed argument about the great things Nels adds to Wilco.
