Relatively Clean Rivers
There is no way Wilco cannot record this unbelievable event, this is truly one for the books! Anyone hear any rumblings of a live DVD or anything like that? There is no way they can go without recording this.
Guest David Puddy
we're all hoping for a DVD for sure.
LouieB
Considering Chicago is filled with tapers, I figure there will be plenty of boots out there of this entire thing. Don't count on an official CD I don't think. (If the Vic shows didn't make it to DVD, I doubt this one will either.) LouieB
Relatively Clean Rivers
Well, why wouldnt it be professionally recorded? This is a huge event.
solace
fwiw, the band records EVERY SINGLE show on audio and has for quite some time now
aricandover
I'd rather have a taper get all 5 shows, than have to deal with a comp CD, or a DVD that might never see the light of day.
Analogman
We'll know if they are - as there will be a no taping policy for the shows. At least, that is how it was when they were taping shows for the KT release.
indy81
I'd rather they didn't record it for official release, because then there will be excellent audience recordings available of all five nights. If they record for a DVD, tapers will have to go stealth.
TCP
fwiw, the band records EVERY SINGLE show on audio and has for quite some time nowDo they have each track recorded individually or do they just have the Left-Right Bus from the mixing board recorded?
keeprighton2
Do they have each track recorded individually or do they just have the Left-Right Bus from the mixing board recorded? Will be surprised if this doesn't turn out to be the mooted live DVD. More than one of the band told me in Dublin that a DVD is in the pipeline, and makes sense that this will be it. Remember that KT was drawn from four nights in Chicago in 2005, so sounds like there's a pattern here. Makes sense financially, rig the set once, hire the kit for the week and then take the pick of cuts from five nights. Wonder how many of the hundred or so songs will make the DVD?!! solace
Do they have each track recorded individually or do they just have the Left-Right Bus from the mixing board recorded?couldn't say for sure how many tracks they use on their own tapes for archiving purposes, but i'd guess it might be more than your average stereo 2 channel mix. even when they're not selling their shows of their tours, Pearl Jam records to a 24 track (and maybe even more now) and has for about 5+ years now, and as technically savvy and audio nerds as Wilco and their crew are, i'm guessing they have a pretty decent setup too. solace
whenever i have looked its been 2 channels.yeah, i know for the webcasts that's all the more they do (with it's own mix), just not sure if the stuff they record for themselves is only 2 channels as well or what. might be most all of the time, then for special occasions where they feel like they might end up using it for an official release, record more. renic
that does make the most sense.
ckc
whenever i have looked its been 2 channels. I thought I read somewhere that Stan sometimes mixes in a stereo mic (or pair) out at the sbd for some room ambience. I know he used to use a Digidesign Mbox and as Renic said it was definitely only 2-track. But if he does use a room mic and still just uses the Mbox, he's likely mixing the 4 channels (L/R sbd feed + L/R room mics) down to 2 before going into ProTools. About 3 years ago before Stan started using his MBox, they wanted to upgrade beyond his mini-disc. I know they talked to a Chicago taper about taping their shows for them in a matrix format. At the time I think it was more for archival purposes than for any sale/downloading. But as the Dead have proved, when you aren't touring as much (or at all) and the money starts running low, your archives become a gold-mine - even, for them, cassette masters. So I imagine someday we'll see Wilco archives, like "Stan's Picks" Renic, have you noticed what Stan has at the board last time you saw them lately?
renic
mmmm the last time i recall was an mbox & an ibook.
chitaper
It would actually be simpler and less work for Stan to record multi-channel, mixing down to stereo on the spot would be problematic and require headphones. And if he was doing all that the room mix would likely suffer. Record multi-channel and you can always down-mix later in the studio any way you like it. Back in, I think, '97 their old sound man Adam plugged me into the board and when I got home I discovered that there was no bass or vocals in the mix, it was pretty much all Jay Bennet's guitar. And I was patched in to his cd recorder, so this is what the band recorded also! But the Rock the River show came out very nice from the board mix, it's pretty hit and miss. But now that computer recording is easy and cheap there's no reason not to just record multi-channel and mix later.
Guest David Puddy
(If the Vic shows didn't make it to DVD, I doubt this one will either.) i thought i remembered reading once that sam jones shot footage for a dvd at the vic shows but it was ruined, and thus no dvd. so it could be possible they'll be shooting these shows... if that's even true about the sam jones footage. I remember reading something about Jeff saying there "wasn't enough of the audience" featured in the filming. He felt that it didn't capture the event well, or something along those lines. froggie
> I doubt the guys want to wear the same clothes for 5 straight nights just like when led zeppelin filmed 3 shows at MSG for the song remains the same video - john paul jones seemed to have changed his outfit a couple of times during the "show"
chriscolbert
I personally could see this being an "all or nothing" type of release simply because they've already gone the KT route where they played a lot of songs multiple nights so that they would have their pick of the best versions. They've put out only one album since then and if they're not repeating any songs, then it would seem silly of them to put together a mix of what would ultimately be viewed as their favorite songs if they do in fact end up doing them all. To sum up, a multi-night mix was obviously planned from the start with KT but a project like this has to be released in it's entirety or not at all IMO.

I don't think it had anything to do with that at all. LouieB
