A friend just informed me that he keeps his registration and insurance on his person, not in the glove box. He claims this is something taught in driver's ed.

It sounds logical, so potential thieves won't have home address, etc info if they make off with your car.

Am I total moron for keeping mine in the car, and for never hearing of this before?

I was always told not to keep that stuff in the car but not because of potential thieves/home address/etc. I think the rationale was you dont want someone who stole your car driving around with "proof" that he "owns" it.

I mistakenly clicked "no" in response to "am I an idiot..." (you're not an idiot and yes, keeping it in the car is fine).

Keep it in the car. What if you get mugged and someone steals your wallet with your precious insurance card in it?

i keep the registration and the insurance card in the car. but then, i have two insurance cards, so i keep the second one on me and there's a copy of the registration (provided by DMV when they gave me the original registration) that lives in a file cabinet in my apartment.

I used to keep them wrapped around my windshield wipers.

I'm not even sure what the registration is.

I have a registration sticker on my car, and I have the title somewhere at home in a filing cabinet. the insurance card stays in the glove compartment, but sometimes I take it out and smell it while I'm in traffic.

I also tend to be a real merge slut--I'll let just about anyone in these days.

plus, right now there is a hat in my back seat
