Lammycat
Here's a "feel-good" story I don't recall hearing about last October. Mike Coolbaugh was a coach for the Rockies' AA minor-league team in Tulsa and died after taking a line-drive to the head last fall. The Rockies gave his widow a full share of the WS money: http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_8347816
Twisted Acres
That is a great story... as a result of Coolbaugh's death, all major league 1st- and 3rd-base coaches are required, beginning in '08, to wear helmets on the field. Too bad it took a death to make it happen, but it's gotta be for some good.
bjorn_skurj
Here is a big fat picture of Ray Caldwell pitching in the first game at Ebbets Field, April 5, 1913. Some of the outfield wall ads are pretty cool.
Lammycat
Very cool picture, bjorn. I love those old baseball photos. I did a workshop for a few weekends last fall where we were taught how to navigate the Library of Congress web site for educational purposes and for a few of my reference 'assignments" I hit up the baseball section. Tons of great photos that have rarely seen the light of day outside the archives in the LOC. I've got a computer key to access that stuff at any time I need to take fuller advantage of. Lammycat
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3262747 Colon to the Red Sox?I like it. Minor-league contract and see how he does in pre-season. If he's still got it he's a good fit for the rotation with Schilling out and Wakefield's injury concerns. If not, no big deal. MrRain422
That is a great story... as a result of Coolbaugh's death, all major league 1st- and 3rd-base coaches are required, beginning in '08, to wear helmets on the field. Too bad it took a death to make it happen, but it's gotta be for some good. The problem is, he was actually hit in the neck, not the head. The helmets certainly make things a bit safer for the coaches, but a helmet would not have prevented Coolbaugh's death.

Lammycat
Yeah, but he really shouldn't have won the Cy Young that year. And he's no spring chicken. He's had his share of injuries like most other 35-year-+-old pitchers have. Plus, he makes a million bucks if he makes the roster . If he shows some decent signs of his form 2 years ago he's right back in it.
Mr. Kinsley
If he shows some decent signs of his form 2 years ago he's right back in it.If by "form" you mean bulbous and bloated, then he should have no problem.
