smells like flowers
Aren't these guys middle aged family guys? Yep, they sure are. With either very active marriages or very active imaginations!
SarahC
I don't think any of the tunes are autobiographical except for "Longer Than You've Been Alive"- I think it's more these songs are about extremely messed up narrators. The whole genesis for the record happened in Nashville where Rhett was on a co-write with a guy named John McElroy. The dude told Rhett immediately "I looked you up on youtube, and I think you're audience would like it if you just say the word "fuck" a lot". They wrote the song "Nashville" on this new record. I think there's several outstanding tunes on the new record. Murry's contribution is excellent. As a whole it's better than both the Grand Theatre records for sure. LouieB
Yep, they sure are. With either very active marriages or very active imaginations!I'm guessing the second. I had a discussion with a friend last week about this album which he likes a lot. We contrasted it to the new Bobby Bare Jr. (which I have not yet heard) which is apparently about his marriage which broke up. I suppose it is fine for middle aged happily married guys to be imagining what is still like to be single and reckless. I guess I need to listen to it a few more times and suspend a bunch of disbelief and just go with it. Nothing wrong with having an active imagination if it all works out. I am thinking of getting a ticket to see them this June at Park West. Anyone got an extra they want to get rid of? LouieB
ameliaclark
Yahoo Music (weird, I know) posted an interview with Rhett a few days ago: https://music.yahoo.com/blogs/yahoo-music/old-97-frontman-rhett-miller-shares-musical-memories-223049659.html

Kim Bodnia
It's actually my first album I buy of theirs, I like it, especially the opening song, they did a really great job, most bands don't deliver this type of sound this late in their careers. I'm not sure yet whether I'll revisit some of the older albums, maybe I will but some other time, at present I'm enjoying these songs and playing them loud, great band. I'm also looking forward to Rhett's next solo album.

Rusty Shackleford
I got the Hitchhike to Rhome re-issue. The packaging was a little disappointing--the "liner notes" consists of a single page of text from Ken, and not a lot of detail or insight. That said, the reissued album actually does sounds better than the original to my ears, which isn't usually the case, and the demos are a nice addition. It's worth picking up if you're a fan. Analogman
I'll probably grab it - since it sounds better.
bilbrekm
Rhett just sat for a conversation on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. I've always been a fan of the music but didn't know much about the rest. The interview was insightful, to say the least. It's free, so have a listen. http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episodes/episode_554_-_rhett_miller
Yaz Rock
Not sure if there is another 97s thread here, I searched and got this"The following search terms are not allowed and were removed from your query: old,97s" Anyhow, Rhett Miller performed "Wreck Your Life" solo acoustic last night (minus the one song which Murry Hammond sang on the album), at the first of his three City Winery NYC shows this summer. He may do the album again at other solo shows elsewhere this summer. Wreck Your Life is now 20 years old, having been released May 1996.
Analogman
I search for this thread by searching for Rhett. I just saw this: Graveyard Whistling. Due February 24th, the album offers up another boozy blast of Texas twang, train-beat percussion and guitar grit from Rhett Miller and company, who recorded its 11 songs in the same border-town studio that spawned the group's major-label debut, Too Far to Care, two decades earlier. Boss_Tweedy
Good news. Hoping a tour will follow. Their live shows are not to be missed.
Analogman
I won't buy it. But their willingness to knock out albums impresses me.
