Mystik Spiral
via We don't know much just yet, but we do know this: On September 9, Jagjaguwar will issue The Stand Ins, the fifth full-length album from Austin, Texas' Okkervil River. The set is described as a sequel to last year's exquisite The Stage Names LP, which its equally Tinseltown-ready title would allude to. You'll recall that The Stage Names was originally conceived as a double album, as Will Sheff touched on in our interview with him from last summer. Guess this is that, then? As for Okkervil, they are now officially down one Meiburg, but that's not gonna stop them from touring the heck outta the rest of the year. Okkervil: 05-24 George, WA - The Gorge (Sasquatch!)05-29-31 Barcelona, Spain - Parc del F
CortezTheKiller
Wow that was quick. Excellent news indeed.
Wendy
love Love LOVE this band! Great news - thanks Myst! And not that anyone asked, but IMO, in this increasingly costly realm of gasoline-prices/time-on-the-road -- they are still seriously road-trip worthy!
insideoutoflove
ahh this made my day. yay!
bigideas
Wow that was quick. Excellent news indeed. yeah.i guess it's sorta like Amnesiac and The Avalanche, i.e. second albums pulled from productive sessions. have they previewed some of these songs live already? solace
hoping this is better than The Stage Names... not that it was bad, just didn't get into it nearly as much as BSB then again, Will's straining vocals tend to bug me a lot more on record than they do live :/
rareair
great news. i loved the stage names. i did, however, just pick up bsb and have been listening to the last week. i am quickly becoming obsessed with this band. saw them open for the new pornographers and thought they were excellent live. watch me fall
then again, Will's straining vocals tend to bug me a lot more on record than they do live :/ This is why I just can't get into these guys. I keep trying, though.
myboyblue
I love Stage Names and BSB and strongly prefer the former. His voice does come off a bit "conor o'berst" at times but that lends it a bit of vulnerability. Either way, the guy is very clearly very into what he is delivering. It works for me. I'm looking forward to the new one.
explodo
Stage Names is not something I enjoy too much (their worst for me outside of Stars Too Small to See), so hopefully this will be better despite apparently being pulled from the same batch of songs (I think most of these were written for Stage Names) and themes. jakobnicholas
It doesn't surprise that some can't get into his voice. It must walk a fine line, because although Oberst's sometimes grates on me, I don't have the same problem with Sheff. Anyone who likes Stage Names (a very solid disc, but only my 3rd or 4th favorite Okkervil River album) and Black Sheep Boy, MUST check out other cd's and ep's of theirs. The band doesn't really have a mis-step yet. Don't Fall in Love Withe Everything You See is great. Down The River of Golen Dreams has 2 of the most beautiful Okkervil River songs ever. The Black Sheep Boy Appendix is almost as good as the proper album (!), and the Overboard and Down ep is worth 13 bucks just for The President's Dead and Love to a Monster. I loved Don't Fall In Love With Everyone You See when it came out. Still one of my favorite records.
