Rays looking at Dunn

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

The Reds and Rays talked Wednesday night about a deal that would send Adam Dunn to Tampa Bay. According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, those talks haven't yet moved beyond the conversation stage. But that conversation is expected to resume Thursday morning. Clubs that have spoken with Tampa Bay believe the Rays don't want to rush into anything as long as Jason Bay remains an option. But they now have Dunn on their plate as an intriguing Plan B.

A headline you weren't expecting tonight:

Shoppach ties extra-base hit record

Indians catcher hits three doubles, two homers against Tigers

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Indians catcher Kelly Shoppach tied a major league record Wednesday night with five extra-base hits -- two home runs and three doubles.

Primarily a backup during his career, Shoppach broke loose in the Detroit-Cleveland game that was tied 12-all through nine innings.

Shoppach doubled and scored in the second, third and fifth innings. He hit a two-run homer in the sixth and tied the score at 12 with a one-out solo homer in the ninth.

Shoppach became the eighth player in the majors to get five extra-base hits in a game, including two before 1900. He was only the second AL player to accomplish the feat -- Indians Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau did it in 1946 with one homer and four doubles.

Shawn Green was the last player to do it in the majors. He homered four times and doubled for the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 23, 2002.

Shoppach, who started his career in 2005 with Boston, began the day hitting .254 with 14 doubles and nine home runs. He has gotten more playing time this season following an injury to No. 1 catcher Victor Martinez.

He's due to bat in the 12th inning. And Cliff Lee gets no-decision after tribe stakes him to an 8-1 lead. Something tells me there's no joy on the Plain Dealer sports deck tonight (I'm off!).

Griffey will probably go, but I heard that he did have the original intention of finishing with the Mariners or the Reds, where he started. Of course, I think the allure of winning a ring is too much to override that notion and he'll leave. Of course, he may want to go to the Mariners after that...

I also heard the trade may involve a Cinci reliever, Weathers or Affeldt. I don't think he can play center any more, so I'm not sure where he's going to play.

I think he can play an average center field for 2 months, which is fine with me. He's better than anything we have on the north side, that's for sure.

I also think this might be a sign Konerko is close to done for the year. They can put Swisher at first (unless of course, Swisher is going to Cincy).

One report says the White Sox are giving up Nick Masset and Danny Richar. Nick Masset is not good, though he may someday be an innings eater. Danny Richar, I think, might end up being a nice player, but the White Sox are fairly deep at 2b in the minors. And Alexei Ramirez is having a very good season. He's only 26 and tied up for three more years.

Reds are picking up Griff's contract. Decision by 11 CDT, supposedly.
