The Almost-Official NHL 2008-09 Season Thread

Recommended Posts

GUYS! It's here! Well almost!

Pre-season has been good so far, I watched a bit of Detroit @ Montreal last night... Carey Price made a GREAT save. Roberto Luongo was named captain of the Vancouver Canucks yesterday... the first goalie captain in 61 years. I was wondering what you guys thought of that. He can't do some duties, like argue calls with refs, but as far as I'm concerned, he's the face and heart of the franchise. He's the leader. He is to the Canucks as Jerome Iginla is to the Flames, Joe Sakic is to the Avs, and Sidney Crosby is the Penguins... he just happens to play a different position. So why not make him captain?

Anyways, here are my predictions! What are yours?

Western Conference

1. Detroit

2. San Jose

3. Vancouver

4. Dallas

5. Anaheim

6. Calgary

7. Phoenix (yes!)

8. Chicago

9. Edmonton

10. Colorado

11. Minnesota

12. Nashville

13. LA

14. Columbus

15. St. Louis

The last three I think can be swapped around. The Northwest will be won be either Vancouver or Calgary. I figure the teams in 6th to 10th will all be real close but I don't see Colorado and Minnesota getting in, they got worse this season while Chicago, Phoenix, and Edmonton got better. As for the east, I don't follow it AS closely as the west, so if you easterners think I'm way off, feel free to tell me :)

Eastern Conference

1. Montreal

2. Washington

3. New York Rangers

4. Pittsburgh

5. Ottawa

6. Boston

7. Philadelphia

8. Tampa Bay

9. New Jersey

10. Carolina

11. Buffalo

12. New York Islanders

13. Florida

14. Atlanta

15. Toronto

Pittsburgh could be a lot lower, it saddens me to see a team so close, get destroyed by free agency. This is what bugs me about the cap.

Presidents' Trophy, again to Detroit. Art Ross to Crosby. Vezina to Luongo.

Hopefully my predictions won't be laughable in 6 months!

Could be the Rangers aren't use to playing on ice like that. Maybe they have jet lag? I dunno! All I know is this intermission commentary is INCREDIBLE.

I like the idea of playing Swedish Elite and KHL teams, hopefully there will be more of these... I read a report on TSN where the NHL says they want to have a European division within 10 years. Rather see we fix our current teams first but it's certainly an interesting idea.

Hey it's Jagr!!!!!

Did I ever tell you Chara went to my high school for awhile? Not while I went, but while my older brother and sister went. Pretty cool considering how I live in a smallish town in the middle of nowhere, but I guess you're bound to get some future NHL-stars when you have a WHL team.

Man, I really don't want to see Detroit win another cup :(

My Nucks beat the Flames, 6-1 today... without the Sedins even. They remain unbeaten in the pre-season, the only team to be so.

that's pretty cool. Chara's improving every year.

And I don't want to see Detroit win another cup either, if it does come down to Detroit vs. Montreal, I'm gonna have a tough decision to make...

Luckily, the five minutes of the Rangers game I was able to see today included that goal. Welcome to N.Y.!

tough to call right now, I hope Montreal isn't at the top Walken. Our Bruins should, I say should be in that 4/5 spot.

I love this Wheeler kid, keep an eye on him.

a lot of talk about Bruins making a deal before the season.

getting a solid D man for some of our extra forwards

I'd like to see Chicago finally show something this year, still the best uni's

Wheeler's been playing his ass off. Very great prospect.

My guess for the last five roster moves:

down to Providence: Hunwick, Thompson, Soderberg, Sobotka

Waivers: Yelle.

Being last place in the Eastern Conference would be the best thing to happen to Toronto in a long time. Tavares is going to be a great player. I bet anything though, that Sundin will return in December, join the Leafs and get them a nice 4th draft pick :P
