Lammycat
It is not really intangible. Fewer games played is pretty tangible. The numbers he missed in not playing are intangible.
MrRain422
Sort of. That's pretty different from what people almost always mean when they use the word "intangibles" in a baseball context though.
Lammycat
So we're going to get into semantics now, too? Intangibles are usually used in the context of a player/teams value that is not easily categorized through stats. In this regard, I find it odd that so many people are griping about the context of the MVP award, as it's an award based on value. Quentin's value decreased because he was hurt for the last month of the season. I'd call that an intangible, but whatever.
bobbob1313
It's very tangible, unless you assume that he wouldn't have done anything over the final month. An intangible argument to use for him is the White Sox record with out him, 12-14. You could use that as an argument for him or against him. For, because they were lost without him, and against because he almost cost his team a playoff spot by hurting himself. Guest Jules
This is getting to the beating-a-dead-horse stage, I feel, but it isn't solely based on numbers.Isn't that what I said?
Serak_the_Preparer
It's not just based on numbers. I know its not just based on numbers - if it were A-Rod would have won another MVP. I stand by my arguement that Youk was the MVP of the Red Sucks. He came through in the clutch more than Pedroia, and while 2nd base is a much more difficult position than 1st, Youk also played 3rd base and if I am not mistaken played the outfield when they needed him last year. All around, he was their MVP.

MattZ
It may be easy(ier) to hide a fat defensive liability at 1b, but a compelling case could be made that 1b has the ability to prevent the most errors by picking errant throws. Not to mention, in the NL at least, you could argue that having a strong '3' for the 3-6 play on sacrifice bunts has a tremendous ability to change the direction of an inning.
