Hold on just one damn minute...

Interesting (paraphrased) quotes from Jon Meacham and Evan Thomas of Newsweek on Charlie Rose, talking about Obama:

"He's very elusive."

"Obama came out with his family and kids. And then they went back off stage. Have you ever seen a victory speech by a President with noone but the candidate. All by himself."

"There's a slightly creep cult of personality. He's so singular...he's a deeply manipulative guy....manages his own spectacle."

"He stands back and soaks in the moment. He watches us watching him."

"He's self-aware enough to know that this creature he's designed isn't a real person."

#2 could have been out of security concerns for his family or, more likely, the length of his speech vs. the age of his kids he'd be forcing to stand up there to sit still for it.

everything else described just about any politician.

My wife and I both thought this may have been for their saftey. But also have you ever seen an election night victory speech before 240,000 people before? Have you ever seen the kinds of spontaneous celebrations break out like they did election night? Nope, this night was an event like no other in American History.

Many white people believe that affirmative action is racist. I just don't agree with it.

not to be lou, have you ever been passed over for a job because of it? to be more fair, do you think that nobody has ever been unfairly passed over a job because of it and spoken/unspoken gender/race 'quotas' at a company?

I have not, but I am sure it has happened before. Of course. If you scroll back a few pages, I admitted that as a policy it opens up some very dangerous doors. But I do think it can be implemented in such a way as to not "unfairly" pass over qualified applicants. I do have to say though, this is sort of my point -- any time a law is passed to "benefit" one race, the other race may feel (rightly or wrongly) that its rights have been curtailed. That's certainly the case with an affirmative action program that is poorly implemented.

Most people use the words racist and bigot interchangeably. And they are similar, but not quite the same. As we know, most people are referring mainly to definition 3 when discussing racism. By that definition, racism has to do with hatred or intolerance of another race or races, not a personal preference or promotion of one's own race; therefore, those who are black and voted for Obama solely for that reason are not racist, but bigoted.

Thanks, Mr. H. Another person doing a better job of saying what I am trying to say.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is the hottest broad on that show.

Carry on.

Now that I've spent entirely too much time, effort and brain power essentially arguing about the difference between a bigot and racist, I am going to bang my head against a wall for awhile and self-impose a hiatus on myself from this thread. I deserve to be punished.

Given who is on the show, that's not much of an accomplishment.

Seriously, if we are going to get into the hottest broads on Elisabeth Hasselbeck starring shows, can we at least make it Survivor and not the View?

i just did the same thing on my blog. the 2-3 people that read it on a regular basis are probably ready for me to go back to talking about old sci-fi movies, comic books, new wave music and tennis shoes. i think it was my original post that sparked the whole thing and it wasn't my intent either.

it just hasn't been easy to quit political talk cold turkey.

I have certainly been denied a job because someone of a different race, religion, gender, nationality sexual preference got it, sure. That is not exactly what affirmative action is, but then I am not going to argue this anymore. If you can prove you have been discriminated based on any of these issues you can file a claim with the EEOC or an equivalent state agency. Or you can sue.

I discussed the voting by African Americans for Barack because he is African American being racist with an African American coworker and she looked at me like I was nuts. So did my white coworkers.....none of them consider this racism.

She also recommended the civil rights museum in Birmingham, Alabama, near the site of the 4th street Baptist Church that was blown up and the four girls were killed. She said it was very moving and we both agreed the Civil Rights museum in Memphis is moving as well.

This is not about anything, just about the civil rights movement in general and we were discussing interesting and moving places to learn history, that's all. Everyone take it down a notch!!!

I just think we ALL need to remind ourselves, ALL OF US, me included, that people have died, been beaten, been jailed, etc. for the right to vote and the right to vote for whomever they want and for whatever reason they want. I am just stunned that this convo went on this long accusing black people of racism for voting for Barack no matter what the reason was in their hearts and minds.

speak for yourself, lou. i really don't need reminding from you or myself, because it's impossible to get images like that out of my head. and, as you've boiled down this entire conversation into 'accusing black people of racism for voting for Barack no matter what the reason was in their hearts and minds'...i'm going to join mattz in banging my head against something.

have fun!
