bleedorange
Granted, Steve Carrell and Paul rudd are funnier in that movie. I don't necessarily agree, but I think everyone is funny in that movie so it's pointless to argue about it. I do think Paul Rudd's best role is in 40-Year-Old Virgin. Moss
I love Will Ferrel. Don't remember even laughing once in Anchorman. To each his own.

lamradio
I finally did see Slumdog on Saturday night. Best Picture? Aw hell naw. Glad Sean Penn won, though. He was ridiculously good in that role. I too just saw this film for the first time last night.. Another film that leaves me completely dumbfounded as to why it got best picture... Yeah, it was a "good" movie, but best picture??? The film did a good job of portraying what the slums are really like over in India.. They definitely didn't candy coat that, but other than that the movie was just... meh...

It's gotta be a victim of overhype in this case. I bet if you saw it without hearing much about it (and before the award season), you'd have seen a different film. Not dissing - I think this happens a lot in general. Most years they get it right, others they don't. They got it right with: No Country for Old Men The Departed Schindler's List UnforgivenAmerican Beauty They got it wrong with: CrashLord of the rings: Return of the King (WAY wrong)Shakespear in LoveEnglish Patient
Guest Runaway Jim
No mention of Chicago in the "they got it wrong" category??? It can't get more wrong. And I don't know if Slumdog was "wrong" because I didn't see many movies from last year, but it was definitely a very unmemorable Best Picture winner for me. I don't blame the hype (maybe a little), I just blame the fact that it's a mediocre movie, at best.

bleedorange
It depends on how you define getting them right or wrong. For instance, I think Chicago and Shakespeare in Love were good choices. Arguable whether they were the absolute best movie of the year or of the nominees (I would say they were the best of the nominees), but still worthy choices. Crash, Return of the King, Gladiator, and English Patient are the only really bad or suspect winners of the last 20 years.
Calexico
I have never liked a Will Ferrell movie with the exception of that one where he lives in a book or whatever, which was just okay. I am a little surprised people here are admitting to liking Anchorman. That is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. His whole career is just a shit fest. I shudder and turn off anything I see him in.
lamradio
His whole career is just a shit fest. I shudder and turn off anything I see him in. Aww.. I've enjoyed his work. Old School was great, and Anchorman is not one of my favorites, but it still has it's moments. Talladega Nights on the other hand... wow... bad movie.
Calexico
I just can't abide him or his coterie of Ben Stiller, Steve Carrel or whatever his name is, that fat hairy fucker in the Knocked Up movie and all the rest of that pack of "comedians". Give me Abbot and Costello anyday.

Re: Shakespeare In Love Well, that film beat out Saving Private Ryan AND The Thin Red Line. I'm sure the general assumption is that they cancelled each other out. But in my opinion both of those films are much better than Shakespeare. For me, The Thin Red Line is one of the most important films I've ever seen.I had never seen a war film like that. It still sticks with me today. I don't agree with every best picture winner, but I feel like a lot of times it's just making up for a missed call from the year prior. Take Million Dollar Baby. I feel Mystic River deserved to win in 2003, but of course the Academy felt the need to give Lord Of The Rings the Summation Award. So Million Dollar Baby screwed The Aviator's chances of winning which in my opinion deserved it more than The Departed. LOL This can go on forever.
Guest Runaway Jim
I like Will Ferrell quite a bit. His movies aren't necessarily great, but he is always funny to me. I feel sorry for anyone that didn't laugh hysterically at him and John C. Reilly in Step Brothers. That's just sad.

Holy crap, seriously one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. that fat hairy fucker Yeah, Seth Rogan is not funny at all.. He's about as funny as Dane Cook (God that guy sucks)
Guest Speed Racer
I love Will Ferrell. I was a naysayer until I was forced to watch Elf on a bus one year, and just fell for him. I know what roles I wouldn't like him in (Old School, etc.) so I just don't see those movies. Loved him in Stranger Than Fiction and Anchorman. Aside from Royal Tennenbaums, Ben Stiller blows chunks. I don't think he's funny, at all.

I did really like Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, but not because of Stiller. I've got to tip my cap to him though - he's made millions and millions of dollars playing the straight man and letting everyone else around him be funny.

Guest Speed Racer
His version of "funny," in so many of his roles, involves just shouting about the stupidity of another character. I would take an Andy/Barney situation over him/anyone any day. If there's a show or movie I'm on the fence about seeing and he's in it, that's enough for me to stay home/change the channel/pick another movie from the queue. I find a lot of the stuff that he did on there to be hilarious.I loved the show when it ran, but I haven't seen it since then. I'm curious to see how it's aged. Stiller was good on the Curb your Enthusiasm too, but he played the same role as always: ticking time bomb.

Yeah but Stiller is the king of awkward humor. So many awkward moments in his movies that make you cringe to watch.. "It's so wrong that it's funny" kind of moments. The Cable Guy is one of my all time favorite movies... Dark, awkward humor at it's best.
