Modern fertility treatments like IVF and Chlomid often increase the likelihood of multiples. My wife and I did IVF and had 2 fertilized eggs implanted. They both survived. Not sure if that's a problem in your eyes. We explored other options like adoption, but since my insurance covered fertility treatments, this was the most financially and logistically feasible option for us.

I understand a family deciding to choose this as a path to parenthood where they are unlikely to get that family for some reason or another. I meant no offense. What I don't understand is how something like this topic happens or any other apparently incapable people end up with a storkful more than they can handle. Didn't mean to be a jerk.

Just checking :cheers

The fertility doctor who agreed to do this crossed, what seems to me, a clear ethical line. Some issues are debatable, but helping a woman of limited means have 8 children when she already has 6 seems clear. Thank God for reality TV, which I am sure will save the taxpayers from supporting this family.

I am very curious who paid the bill on all these treatments and the birth. I mean, I think women should do what they want with their bodies, be it have an abortion or have 18 kids at one shot like some fat sow, but there are so many people out there who need medical care and can't afford it...did Kaiser Permanente foot the bill for all this? I guess they have the right to do with their money what they want, but honestly.

well said. :)

Love that weird fam! No dancing though, it reminds them of porking. I could never figure out how they pay for all that tator tot casserole they eat. Since the show they seem to be rolling in the big bucks. Bought an RV & everything. Just like the little people fam on TLC. Skip college, land a reality show.

Love the Roloff clan! They have been bringing in some sweet dough since the show. People line up for hours just to get one of their pumpkins!!! They have upgraded their farm & gotten a wee bit rich from the show. Mr. R is a very intelligent dude. Mrs. R moves a little to serious for me though.

She might want to talk to Kate Gosselin for pointers on how to exploit her kids. Kate's done a pretty stellar job at that over the past couple of years. No doubt she'll have a TLC reality show any time now.

I can't watch that show because I can't stand how she treats her husband. That guy is a saint for putting up with her.

I've thought that before. But, when you see how the place was when they bought it, it's amazing to see the work he has done.

Since we are talking about these shows, I often wonder if the people in them get paid as an actor would, or if it just some sort of financial deal relating to the revenue generated from how many times an episode is shown. I would also think they have a piece of the merchandising that goes on. It seems as they shows get popular, they people in them begin to do their own merchandising, so I am curious to know if TLC or whoever, gets a percentage of that. At one point, The Roloffs were selling jars of dirt from their farm, which is seems absurd, but I am sure they took the money just the same.

I do know that in at least one episode of Jon and Kate, she talks about working double shifts to make ends meet. This is the sort of thing that makes me think about the money deal. If they are making money from the show, then why does she need to work double shifts? I suppose that may have been an early episode, and maybe things have changed now.

I have also read that many of these families have had to employ security people to deal with the fans that expect to knock on their front door and hang out with them. So someone has to pay for that, TLC or the family, I wonder.

Neither Jon nor Kate work. He used to work in IT and she was a nurse working on the weekends. She quit to stay home with the kids and he quit after the show took off. Now neither of them work. They get endorsements from companies, they wrote a book, and get donations for trips and things. Like the ski trip they took was totally paid for by the resort. They also do "motivational speaking" and get paid $25K per engagement for that.

I really can't stand either of them. I think she treats him like crap and he just bugs me. I like to read some of the posts on http://goselinswithoutpity.blogspot.com Some of them are real eye openers as to the kind of people Jon and Kate really are. Kate's sister Clairissa used to have a blog that was public and she used to talk about the relationship with Kate and her parents and why Kate has nothing to do with them. She used to be close with her brother, Kevin, but that has turned sour too.

I used to love that show but when I got to see what they were really like, I couldn't stand to watch it.

Aha - I did not know these things. I have not kept up with the show that much. So it was older episodes I saw. I figured they had to have something going on - when they were on that shopping trip to Sam's Club - and no product names were blurred out. Matt Roloff does the speaking deal also - I forgot about that. Family relations are a painful trip - for some, for others everything is cool. That's all I can say about that.

I see that blog has been deleted. I did a Google search - and the link I found worked. Odd.

After reading through this thread again it occurs to me that maybe she had that many kids to get a gig on TLC. That would be a hell of a career move.

Thanks for this link. It was pretty eye-opening. I don't watch the show because I can't stand Kate, so I didn't realize that they are still putting their 4 1/2 year old kids in high chairs with bibs and sippy cups and encouraging their baby talk. Sounds like they know once kids get older they are no longer as cute and marketable, so they're trying to hold out as long as they can.

they had a segment about her/the cost of taking care of the babies on ABC World News last night. Apparently she paid for the fertility treatments with a $100,000 worker's comp settlement. She receives $1900 x 3 from the state of california for 3 of her children because they have disabilities. she also receives approximately $500 from the state for food stamps, although i don't know if that is per week or per month. the hospital taking care of the 8 babies said it is an average of $3500 a day to care for each baby (x8) and they have to stay in the hospital for 8 more weeks, the total hospital bill for the 8 will exceed $1million and the hospital has now asked the state to help pay for the bill. guess tax payers are footing the bill after all.

and the fertility doctor that has helped her have all 14 babies is now under investigation.

Oh really. I saw some interview with her where she said she was doing this all herself, and was not taking any "hand-outs". Maybe I missed the context of what she was talking about.

I'm guessing she's not being very forthcoming about it. According to ABC World news she's not paying the hospital bill and is indeed receiving state assistance. maybe she views the money she's collecting as her means of "doing this all herself", she did after all file for food stamps and the state assistance for the disable children all herself.

And taxpayers also subsidize sports stadiums populated by pharmaborg athletes.

It's a brave new world.

Maybe we should require her to have a webcam going on the 14 younguns and her. Nothing like watching batshit crazy if it isn't firsthand in your own house.
