Littlebear
here's a thematic stab: AM - Casino Queen: This song provides a landscape for the album, much like a great novel establishes an image for the reader to refer back to throughout the book. Being There - Someone Else's Song: This is an album of country, folk, and rock songs. It combines all the greatest elements of pop music on one album. Here Jeff admits, with humility, that he and his band don't have much to say; he praises the greats before him... but we all know that they have much to say, and they are in the category of the greats. Summerteeth - I'm Always in Love or ELT: Jeff's volatile personality is highlighted here, and that volatility is reflected in the range of songwriting on this album. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Ashes of American Flags: Both about rebirth and a reckoning with the fact that our essence always lingers with us, this song mirrors American history and the very singular and individual "American experience," full of self-mortification and self-discovery. A Ghost is Born - Muzzle of Bees: An existential album at its core, this song most poetically and poignantly champions the mystic connections in our lives. Sky Blue Sky - Sky Blue Sky: This album is full of songs I'd call Nostalgic Americana, which revolve around, again, an American landscape. This song seems to be the foundation upon which the rest were built. Great arguments, sir
Littlebear
Not trying to be a dick, but what does it mean to "represent the album as a whole"? To me, it'd be the song that would represent an album as a whole
anthony
A.M. - Casino Queen Love it or hate it, to me, it has become iconic of this record. Dirty, rocky, countryish and silly. A great extension of UT. Being There - Red Eyed and Blue I chose this song because it was a tune that originally grabbed me and starting me into the band. Not entirely sure why; I do love the walking bass lines and unique chord progression. Summerteeth - Via Chicago For me, this is the quintessential Wilco song. Underneath the experimental arrangement (read: noise), there is a simple folk song. Combine that with unexpectedly dark lyrics and this is Wilco in a nutshell. YHF - Ashes of American Flags Like Via Chicago, I love how this one combines dark lyrics, simple song and aggressive arrangement. AGIB - At Least That's What You Said I love this song because it is so un-Wilco like. Jam-my, electric, straight forward lyrics, a guitar solo(!). It makes a statement. SBS - You Are My Face For the middle section alone, this song is an instant-classic. But I love the cryptic lyrics, as well. Nels has arrived.
chisoxjtrain
A.M.-Too Far ApartFor some reason, I always really liked this song. Cool riff and just a fun rocker. Its awesome they brought it back live. Being There-MisunderstoodThe beginning of Wilco's transformation. Summerteeth-I'm Always In LoveFirst song I ever loved by Wilco. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-Poor PlacesFirst song I heard from this album on XRT in the summer of '01. The most important track on YHF. A Ghost Is Born-TheologiansMy favorite Wilco song. Sky Blue Sky-You Are My FaceGreat transition between the slower part and the funky-soul part in the middle.
