Basically a guy I work with said he had never heard Wilco and wanted to know which album to buy. I told him that I would make a mix on my ipod to listen to at work, putting 1 or 2 songs for each album. But I want to make sure he gets a feel for each album so he doesnt buy one and find it isnt anything like the other stuff he has heard.

I've been doing that for about a year now........Too hard to pick one or two from each album.......I usually pick some live versions from the Kicking Television CD for songs that I can't stand on AGIB and YHF.......The live versions of some of those songs are less noisy if you now what I mean.......

I think probably "Via Chicago" or "Misunderstood" would be good choices off of KT, those two I think represent Wilco as a live entity today.

I have to disagree with Misunderstood, seeing as they haven't even played it since August '08 (11 shows).

I kind of took this thread as choosing the song that best describes the overall sound of each album, and what the band was trying to go for at that time.

AM: Pick Up the Change - It best exemplifies the laid-back country rock they were going for and showed Jeff Tweedy's lower register of vocals that he rarely used with UT as well as a fantastic melody. I could've easily picked I Must Be High for this one too, but I just happen to like Pick Up the Change more.

Being There: Sunken Treasure - It has those dark puzzling lyrics that were never very evident in Tweedy's work before, but for which he's become known for. It's also one of their first ventures into noisier music.

Summerteeth: Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway (again) - It matches the dark lyrics and upbeat melodies this album is known for and also has an unbelievable amount of layers on it.

YHF: IATTBYH - This one's pretty self-explanatory. One of their greatest songs that sums up the sound they were going for in what was probably the greatest period of their career.

A Ghost is Born: Hell is Chrome - This one was kind of tough, but with it's whispered lyrics, feedback-laced guitar solo, and simple, but perfect arrangement, it has to be this.

Sky Blue Sky: What Light - This one was also kind of tough, but when I watch both Sunken Treasure and the SBS bonus dvd, it seems like this song encapsulates a lot of the ideas Jeff had at the time about his music. He said he "just wants to write some fucking songs" and that's what this is. There's no pretension about it, and at the end of the day, it's just a pretty little song, which is undoubtedly what they were going for with this record.

Perfect :worship

I'm going to second that one. I wanted to say "Company in my back" because I love that song but Muzzle of Bees is a better choice.

Anybody know what "Company in my back" is about lyrically?

I'm sure it could mean a lot of things, but I remember reading it's something like a love song sung from the point of view of insect. I can see that.

That makes more sense than anything I have come up with.

AM: casino Queen: just like the album raw, fun, and not that mature or great

BT: tough one....sunken treasure b/c i cant think of another better one

ST: Via Chicago

YHF: Ashes of American Flags (perfect song for the perfect post 9/11 album)

AGIB: Less Than You Think: how can you not pick the song which is supposed to be a musical migraine for an album filled migraines/painkillers

SBS: Impossible Germany

If you had to make an all-star baseball team from Wilco songs (3 song limit from each album), which songs would you pick, and what positions would you put them at? Assume that you have a DH, a starting pitcher, middle relief, set-up guy, and closer.

THEN, what would your batting order be, and who would you pinch run for, and which song would you sub out against southpaws? And which songs are switch-hitters?

GO!

AMERICAN LEAGUE

(in batting order)

SS - Monday

CF - War on War

1B - Sunken Treasure

LF - You Are My Face

3B - Pot Kettle Black

DH - Impossible Germany

RF - Airline To Heaven

C - Ashes of American Flags

2B - Remember The Mountain Bed

SP - Misunderstood

MR - Someday Some Morning Sometime

CL - Shake it Off

Lefty relief: Heavy Metal Drummer

Pinch runner: Outta Mind Outta Site

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CF - Nothingsevergonnastandinmyway(agin)

2B - Spiders (Kidsmoke)

DH - I Must Be High

RF - At Least That's What You Said
